No they wasn't, they played on an era where there was a ridiculous amount of striking talent and as good as they both were they were similar in style to Shearer and Shearer was better than both of them and next to Shearer you needed a drop off type of striker like Teddy Sheringham who in that era was the best at that, so unfortunately Fowler, Cole, Ferdinand Wright, Sutton, Hirst (when fit) etc..had to miss out
@Taporeee

Nah, that's ridiculous. Fowler and Cole could and often did play a modern striker role too, dropping into the 10 and drifting into the channels with variations in approach play with the attacking players. In fact under Keegan, Cole did play with Shearer. The media were absolutely vicious to Cole as Owen's PR team was immense. Depends on the style the team plays as well. They might play a more open formation which by nature creates more space for chances. For some reason people look at a goal tally as an indicator of the players skill, it's misleading. You can score half the amount of goals and it can be more important to the team and lead to more success. Didier Drogba is a prime example of not scoring many but the goals producing more victories. You used to get players scoring 20 goals in mid to lower table sides because the teams just created more chances but at the detriment of the structure.

15 England caps and zero goals, maybe he just didn't fit the formation? Maybe the England side played a tighter formation back then so they needed someone who was clinical from fewer chances. Not every player can be as effective in various styles/tactics and maybe their ego won't see that?

Why did Glen not pick Wright? Glen made up an excuse. It was not a valid reason. Not when the striker goes on to win everything. That's why England has won nothing since 66' and will continue to win nothing. Got to call out the BS when you see and hear it.

Propergander used to keep black players out of the glory positions for the national team. Gary Liniker used to echo the same statement about black strikers on match of the day. He did this right up until Jermaine Defoe. Paul Merson called it out on Soccer Saturday, and it has not happened since.

He wasn't top drawer. Very frustrating striker. Averaged 15 goals across 8 seasons at United. With service coming from Beckham, Giggs, Scholes etc, that's not great. Look at RVN's United stats to see what a top top striker does.

Ruud was elite but he played on his own it was different and be didn't win close to what Cole did ,Cole,Yorke, Sheringham and Oli so 15 a season is great when you win a treble, multiple league titles, Fa cups

He wasn't as good as other top strikers at the time but he was in the best team at that time which helped his numbers. Even then he never scored 20 league goals for Utd, that's not near best prem strikers ever. He had 1 great season at Newcastle. Good player but not a great player.

I’d give an arm and a leg to have a prime Andy Cole in the United team right now. He was all about goals. Never gets the credit he deserves. His numbers don’t lie and take into account that if he had taken penalties he would be close to Alan Shearer numbers all day long

Goals are a weird commodity. I remember everyone going on about Matthew Le Tit. He's awesome, he's this. Yeah, he was, against shit opposition. He played against Italy in the WCQ and was shite. And same with Nat King Cole. If he was as good as he is chippy, he would have been twice as good as he was. Good striker, marginally international standard. Remember Steve Bloomer (who retired in 1914) is 2nd on the all time list, Andy (call me Andrew, no Andy's now fine) Cole is 37th. Let that sink in.
