A sublime performance and a great Olympic tournament from Murray, I think some folks forget Andy Murray is a 2x Olympic Champion as he went on a great run from this up to 2016 when he retained his Olympic title beating Del Potro in that Final, at his best Murray was a fantastic player.

Murray was absolutely sublime in the 2012 Olympics. People often forget how in the semi final he had one of his most emphatic wins over Djokovic. Enjoy your retirement Andy, you’ve earned it.
@martinhudecek88862 ай бұрын
Djokovic was slightly less amazing in 2012 and 2013 after his then career best of 2011. But murray would continue to have bothered novak at wimbledon after 2013 if things had turned out just a bit differently. Now novak is of the best wimbledon and grass players and it cant be ruled out he would have won in the 80s or 90s playing more at the net.

Just weeks earlier, Federer beat Murray in the Wimbledon final on this very court. I often wonder if this victory here spurred Murray on for his first Wimbledon final win a year later.
@CarlosBacardi Жыл бұрын
The pain of losing the Wimbledon, plus the knowledge he could turn it on at a final at Wimbledon in front of a manic home crowd undoubtedly did spur him on to win Wimbledon the following year.

Borderline superhuman performance by Murray. The very definition of an Olympiad home advantage - it wasn't inconceivable that Murray could beat Federer, but to do so with such panache on his home turf (quite literally, at Wimbledon no less) was nothing short of - as you said - legendary. I can remember watching this live and thinking of Murray "he's going to get steamrollered". I was literally jumping and screaming at that last ace. Phenomenal stuff

Federer had just played a 4 hour semi final against del Potro the day before for silver and was burnt out. Take nothing away from Murray, this was probably the best match he ever played, but its a shame we couldn't see Federer at his best. This was when his body started to decline.
@jbm81674 ай бұрын
Untrue, Fed's SF wasn't the day before. It was on Friday, so Fed got the standard rest period for a decently long slam match as the final was on Sunday. On the Saturday, while Fed rested, Murray - having just beaten Djokovic in singles on Friday - played 2 matches (which though being doubles matches were still tense matches with actual Olympic medals on the line, so were hardly stress-free relaxed events). This idea that Fed lost on Sunday only because of physicality is cheap as Murray too would have been tired. Fed just underperformed on the day and didn't have the usual crowd support
@marykistnen68373 ай бұрын
@@jbm8167 Exactly. And looking at these highlights, Murray played more agressively than he normally played, and his shots were amazingly accurate. Murray had a very clear head that day and once he got through the first five very tough games he gained the confidence to play the best tennis of his life.

Worst match on grass I’d seen Federer play. His movement wasn’t the same nor was the intensity. He definitely seemed to lack power in his shots. I’m sure he was carrying some injury, most likely back I think. Anyway, Murray still played extremely well and deserved the easy win.
