What a fascinating interview and what a lovely hard working person Andy is. Our paths have crossed several times going back to when I was 16 and 17 right up to later times when Ash played quite a small venue in Tavistock Devon. The playing was as stunning as ever. He won’t remember, but we met backstage in 1973 at Sheffield City Hall and had a brief chat about his signature Flying V. Argus and Andy’s playing was such an influence at that time. I started a school band and we played songs off Argus on our first stage debut. We were quite rubbish, but it went down well and set me on a lifetime path of music and playing. Long may he continue to give pleasure and enjoyment.

It was absolutely the wrong decision, regardless of the judgement. Martin Turner was not trying to take Andy's fanbase away. There was room for both versions and Martin's was concentrating only on the 70s material. WA have only made one or two decent albums anyway since Martin was forced out of the band (not left of his own accord) by Andy.

The first hour of this interview is very interesting. Powell has always been a great raconteur. I'll give him that. But after the one hour mark we get to the meat of this interview and the misrepresentation, distortion and outright untruths are astonishing. The outcome of that case was very controversial. I know the various parties involved. Not everybody thought the case was fairly judged. As I remember there were actually two judges as it went through different stages. But ultimately, rightly or wrongly; Powell won the case. My point to you - the interviewer and owner of this channel is - interview Martin Turner - and get his side of the story. Are you a thorough and impartial music journalist or archivist, Craig? Are you prepared to hear the other side of the story? I'll tell you one thing - I know Martin personally, and he is a pussycat. He's not bitter. The whole thing with the skull (which was years ago) was a joke and the audience knew it. Many of us thought that Wishbone Ash ended in 1991-3. Powell went off and did Blue Law. There was NO Wishbone Ash. Then he decided to recruit 3 unknown American musicians and try and pass it off as Wishbone. It wasn't. It's all such a shame. Many of us thought then - and still do - that both legacy bands (for that is what they are - each with only one original member) should be equal: Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash and Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash. That's how I view them. Wishbone was Turner, Upton, Turner, Powell, Wisefield. They were the core. Those 5 guys made the band what it was. But remember who formed the band (Martin Turner & Steve Upton) and who was invited in (to replace the earlier guitarist Glenn Turner) which would be Ted Turner & Andy Powell. MT was always seen as the creative leader of the band. It was his idea to have the twin guitar thing. He came up with many of the guitar melodies and used to sing them to the guitarists; and of course he wrote most of Argus. It's all such a sorry tale, it really is. But I repeat - no story is complete when only one of the participants gets to control the narrative. Interview Martin Turner for 2 hours and see what he has to say. Finally, I will give kudos to Andy Powell for his plaudits about Cream. That's one thing we both share - a love of Clapton, Bruce & Baker . . .

@hairlessx1111 ай бұрын
@@robinlawson701 The 'continuity' (and all that the real fans think about that) cannot be argued against - HOWEVER, it is Martin Turner's band that sound like the original 70s versions, Mk1 & Mk2. It's his vocals and bass-playing that are and were, arguably, the most important element of the band and always have been. Guitar players - as have been witnessed in both MT and AP's various incarnations of their bands prove they can be changed. But AP singing 'Warrior'...? No thanks. It's ironic that his version sound more like a tribute band while MT's have that heart and soul. Yes, I have seen both versions and saw the band first in 1976.

One of the best interviews with a brilliant guitarist I have heard both of you showing how interviews should be done - even if I wasn’t a huge WA fan I would have appreciated this. First saw WA at Apollo Glasgow for New England tour - I dream of playing WA in a band but need brilliant band to do their stuff. Argus was album of the year in UK and is both appreciated and totally under appreciated at the same time. Read the whole legal judgement on WA name and it rightly belongs to Andy though it was sad to read it all and shows how badly represented these great artists were. Stood in front of Andy’s two Fender Twins at the Ferry in Glasgow 10 or so years ago and it was face tearing loud and just brilliant. So great Andy kept the band alive all these years .

Great show; superb questions, amazing answers from a guitar legend. Please check out COAT OF ARMS, the latest Wishbone Ash album. IMO it's their best since Argus, and is among their top four all-time albums. The song-writing is really imaginative; top-notch.

Get a Kurt Wilson Korina V. Mine has a slimmer neck on it, not like a fat 50's. You can order any size neck you want. Kurt is awesome! I just met with the lads in Milwaukee to do a bit of guitar tech work for them. Super awesome people, the whole band. If you have never seen the band it is a must!

I have seen Wishbone Ash 3 times in South Africa. First time was with Nazareth at Sun City in the early 80s. I was an instant fan from then. They played with Heep and Purple in Durban in 2010, and were frigging awesome once again. I took my youngest son to see them in Durban in 2019, and he was completely blown away from the moment they struck up the first number. He's laid claim to my WA vinyls 😊

I’m listening to this interview whilst drinking - it’s the only way that I can make it through… The (totally unchallenged by the interviewer), lies, distortions and mistruths from around the one hour mark, are just unbelievable!!!!! Martin Turner founded and named, Wishbone Ash (along with Steve Upton); Guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via an advert in a UK weekly music paper ‘Melody Maker’. Martin also was the creative force and principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist of WA as well as being the undisputed frontman back in their glory years when it actually mattered. The true Wishbone Ash and music fans (at least largely in the UK and Europe - don’t know so much in the USA), don’t totally buy AP’s version of events re. the WA “brand and band” history. There are as many people at Martin’s band shows in the UK and Europe as there are at Andy’s band shows. Plenty of folk even see both bands!! Craig Garber comes across as a real Rock and guitar fan and hell of a nice guy, but he really does need to interview Martin Turner to get his side of the WA story…. especially re. the court case and associated fall out. The skull lamps thing on top of Martin’s amp was an extremely gentle rib/dig, “The Harmony Twins - Andy & Laurie!!!”, (switches on skull lamps). It was an in-joke and just a bit of gentle fun way back in 2006/7 or so, that’s all. No one who knows Martin’s (often wacky and off-the-wall sense of humour), took it at all seriously…. Anyone who’s read Andy Powell’s book should also go out and read Martin Turner’s book, “No Easy Road” which is similarly illuminating. It’s a tragedy to see our musical heroes falling out and fussing and fighting… none of us are getting any younger but I suppose that a musical band divorce is as bad or worse as a marriage breakdown….!!!!!

Martin Turner was the founding member pf Wishbone Ash, Andy came along shortly afterwards. there are two sides to every story, anyway, don't want to get into that, Andy is a really gifted guitarist. just a shame about all the acrimony, same with John Lees and Les Holroyd of Barclay James Harvest. They should have a pint together, before it is too late.
