Jeff Carlisi was the lead guitarist & an original founding member of 38 Special. He was responsible for SO MANY of the band’s great signature guitar solos and licks, and he was also the co-writer of many of the bands top hits, including my favorite 38 special song, “If I’d Been The One,” from Tour de Force (1983). Jeff was with the band from 1974 - 1996. Jeff grew up and played in bands with most of the members of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd & 38 Special. The band’s first 2 LPs weren’t very successful, but their 3rd LP, Rockin Into The Night earned them their first top 40 single and sold 250K records. The band wound up selling over 20 million LPs.

ARS were about to hit the stage and Barry Bailey's guitar tech was setting up so. I asked him what year was the LP Goldtop Deluxe, he called back to Barry and got that it's actually a 1968 1/2. During the last tour with Ronnie Hammond on vocals, the band was at dinner and told the stagehand selling merch I really wanted to see the Goldtop. Lo and behold, he goes and gets a guitar case and hands me THE Deluxe. Not wanting to drop it, I got down on one knee and played it unplugged. It was like butter !

Just saw 38 Special in a small venue in Philly..sounded and looked great ..age means nothing where excellent talent is concerned..Mr. Carlisi..please come back to the group..they obviously have great guitarists ..but would be even better if you could see your way to come back..I say this as a 40 year fan..Many fans are out here that would so appreciate !!

@@Meatball3800 I am deeply honored that you replied to my comment. My admiration of great music goes way back, but .38 Special has always been my favorite. Interesting story to tell about my appreciation of your contribution to a monumental moment of my life. I met a stunning young lady in 1989 by the name of Nannette. It was one of those moments in life that will live in my memory until my last breath. To make a long story short, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on her, I was determined to win and know her heart. After pursuing her for what seemed like an eternity, she agreed to a date. I had to make a good first impression, so I did what I thought was my best move. I put together a mix tape. We were having a completely awesome first date, when I suggested we listen to some music. The first two songs on the tape, Fantasy Girl and Like No Other Night. No lie Jeff. Needless to say, our first date lasted 32 beautiful years. In retrospect, it was the best move I ever made. I lived a charmed life for those 32 years thanks to those 2 songs. My daughter Nicole and I lost our beautiful Angel on July 31st of this year due to cancer. Her passing irreparably changed our life forever. Here's the catch Jeff, her appreciation of .38 Special's music was equal to mine from that first date. She also loved your guitar work on every single song. As she was passing, we were playing music for her. In the moment that I played Fantasy Girl for her, she smiled and left this world peacefully. I guess the song had a bigger impact on her than I originally thought. It helped win her warm and loving heart, and allowed me to live a life full of love and wonder. I was a lucky man. I wanted to share this with you for many reasons Jeff, but mostly to truthfully let you know the impact and meaning your music had in both of our lives. I listen to .38's music now and it brings me comfort in the memories of my wife associated to almost every song. I once again offer kudos for your contribution to not only unforgettable music, but more importantly to the memories of my beloved Nannette. Thank you Jeff. Wonderful experience for me to have had the opportunity to converse with you and I am honored to have had this opportunity to briefly share our story. Music not only originates in the heart, it lives forever in the heart. Peace and prosperity to you good sir. God bless.

After a few decades i can finally play it note-for-note. But, in all seriousness, with all of the guitar solos out there, you ALWAYS had an emotional melody behind yours, much like Boston. You have always been a favorite player to me. I have said that a guitarist that becomes one with the music, you can tell who hits what I call “wrestling the demon”. You’re awesome brother! This was awesome. .38 was the first band I ever saw live in concert. Hollywood Sportatorium. They opened for Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws. Right when Rockin into the Night was coming out. I was 14.

I'm a huge Skynyrd/38 fan...somewhere around 1980,I won a contest on a Long Island radio station (I THINK it was WLIR)...the prize was tickets to see 38 at The Pallidium in NYC and then hang with them in the lobby and drink free beer (those were the days!)...Jeff is so humble for such a talented and successful musician...loved the history,the stories,and those guitars (that iconic Explorer 😛)...I got more enjoyment out of this than any interview I've seen before...God bless!

Do you remember Larry who used to play bass for 38 Special? Years ago, he was dating my sister-in-law. One Sunday afternoon, they came to visit us and Larry cooked chicken wings for us and we had a great time and even had a little jam session come evening. I still have photos of that day.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar I'm looking at the photo now. It was 1984 and Larry Junstrom (may he rest-in-peace) was dating my sister-in-law, Yvette (from Orlando), who looked a lot like Cher. My best friend had a full drum kit and a Fender Precision Bass that Larry played. I still had my 1973 Les Paul Custom Burst w gold hardware. The craziest part of the whole story was that shortly after that, Yvette became a cop with the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. And while she was a cop, she also became a born-again Christian. Insane.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar Thank you and I'm glad you mentioned it because that photo is/was from 2015. I just now changed for one taken about 2 months ago. Although I cycled on-and-off with fitness programs throughout my life (CrossFit being a recent one), I was age 63 before I had my first bodybuilding session. If I had known I had the genetic makeup for it, I would have started bodybuilding 40 years earlier. The photo that I just changed out was taken slightly more than a year after my first session. Unfortunately, about 2 weeks after photo (2015), during an intense session, I partially tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder. I opted for rehab in lieu of surgery which restored functionality but ended my bodybuilding, or so I thought. However, around 6 months ago, I came up with a modified routine that worked around the rotator cuff muscle and, within about 2 months, appearance-wise, I was back to 95 percent of where I was in 2015. That is... right up until I fell off a ladder about 4 weeks ago onto my left shoulder which turned my partial tear into an 80 percent tear. But the good news is that I'm scheduled for surgery on the 15th of this month Nov 2023). My surgeon told me that I probably will be able to resume FULL bodybuilding activities after about 4 or 5 months. I can’t believe I’m just seeing this interview! Jeff has always been my favorite. I could listen to him all day. He’s seen so much of the history of southern rock and rock music in general. Years ago I was so excited when .38 Special was playing our local fairgrounds. I never got the opportunity to see them when they played big venues. I was disappointed when I went to the show and Jeff was no longer with them. I understand that he did what was best for him and I can’t fault him for that. I got to see Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant before Donnie retired from touring. Jeff is one of the often overlooked, highly underrated, and criminally under appreciated guitarist of all time. I grew up listening to Skynyrd and .38 Special. They were the soundtrack to my childhood and teenage years in the 70s and 80s growing up in SC. I still listen to them often. Thank you Mr. Carlisi for everything you’ve contributed to music and beyond. You seriously need to write a book with all your stories.

St. Petersburg Florida at the Bayfront Center Arena, 2 drummers, laser light show-Awesome! Joan Jett opened the show. I’ll never fucking forget it!!! I never saw 38 at the LCC (would years later in a casino)- but did see many shows there as a teen living in St Pete! AC/DC, Rush, Maiden, Sabbath (Dio), great venue! Jeff was a joy to hear then and now!

@@Hamrhed545 I screwed up Ryan, too many shows! It was at the Bayfront in St. Pete! I saw Def Leppard as well in 1983 in Lakeland. That was a great show too, the openers were Krokus and John Butcher Axis. It’s funny, John Butcher now lives about a mile from my house is Massachusetts. I see him occasionally around town and have had a chance to reminisce about that show. I even got him to sign my ticket stub which I still have. He’s a great guy.

The whole interview pretty amazing. I'm pretty blown away by the Ronnie Van Zant friendship. Basically if Jeff had not finished college he would have never become a rock star?! That group played in South Florida only a couple months after I moved back.

In 1983 i was a young, 13 yo guitarist playing for a little over a year and I was always glued to MTV and I remember this dude's videos being a highlight of my day whenever they came on. Even back then I could tell he was totally unique and all of his solos were very well constructed, but flashy too. Plus the explorer was badass.

My first concert. Carowinds Charlotte NC. Eddie Money opened. ❤❤❤❤ .38 made me ❤ music. Never the same after hearing and SEEING these guys. Cool Story: I wanted to see them SO BAD, I coerced my high school Art Teacher into allowing us to form an Art Club for the sole purpose of chartering a bus and going on a “High School Field Trip” The amusement rides were cool, but the open air concert was my mission. I rounded up/enlisted enough “honorary art club members” to fill a bus. What a JAM ! (That became my nickname in school) Thanks Jeff !!!

But, the next day I put on the "Are You Ready" live album and just let Barry's tone take me back to my teen years and I realized that he is not suffering with that disease anymore. And that can't be bad for him. And I still have all that music. My son works at the Gibson factory in Nashville, TN and when I texted him about Barry's passing he promised that when the next LP Deluxe came across his bench he would play "Spooky" on his phone and put some extra love in that guitar for the next Barry Bailey disciple. ROCK ON, BARRY!

Craig , this is one of my favorite interviews you've done- i've watched it many times and you do an awesome job in how you interview, the questions you ask and how you ask them as well as giving the artist plenty of space for detailed answers and explanations. awesome job as always brother! i truly, truly love Jeff Carlisi as a musician and awesome guitar player! he's one of the more rare players that has his own sound and tone and most importantly always plays/played for the song. Rockin' Into The Night is the track that introduced me to the band as a young pre-teen kid getting into music and having my own little bit of money to start buying and building my music collection and at 54yo i still have several of my 38 vinyl albums as well as on cd and cassette formats. i can't count how many times i've seen 38 special over the years when they rolled through Indiana, truly one of the great classic rock bands and i hope to meet the man someday. another awesome interview Craig!! \m/ \m/

As a pilot myself, I have put myself (through thought) in that situation many times, and the only thing I can attribute the accident to, is "get-there-itis". There is a new movie Atticus Pyle produced that shows exactly how they ran out of fuel. Though it paints Artimus as a Superhero and is not 100%acccurate they got the details of the crash right as far as how it transpired. Basically the rookie co-pilot accidentally dumped the fuel while trying to raise the landing gear back up. Great interview subscribed with notifications look forward to more!

I saw the last concert Lynyrd Skynyrd did Tokyo I never heard 4 walls of Raiford until this morning. Just Ronny and Jeff. ❤ I lived in California most of my life and also lived in Nashville Tennessee for 6 years. I knew about ed king. I just turned 62 and I bought a couple of guitars this year after my mom died. Play the bands 80s 90s 2000s. There's always someone that can't leave a special moment alone.
