He's not just doing that as a gag, he needs to hunch over to get the voice right. He also used to drink something he called "Gollum Juice" in order to get that throaty, phlegmy Gollum voice.

Agreed, and it wasn't just motion capture, it was more like they just added the makeup in post production instead of before filming. No special effects can duplicate those facial expressions, especially the eyes, with that kind of detail and complexity. That's all Andy.

Hilde Bos - So you know Smeagol was his name when his cousin found the Ring at the bottom of the Anduin River. Gollum is what he became once he killed his cousin because of his lust for the ring. Gollum represents his tortured soul controlled and consumed by the power of "The One Ring - The Ring of Power". He was always Still partially Smeagol, which yes was the good part of him barely holding on. It's the reason Bilbo and Frodo took pity on him and spared his life. Anyway that was awesome to watch aye? Andy Serkis is amazing!

The most underrated actor in Hollywood, this man deserves an Oscar for every movie he’s done. Mocap acting is so much more difficult than just stage acting and Andy nails every role he does from Sméagol to King Kong. Not to mention the fact that he has shed new light on what Mo capping is. I hope we have many more Serkis films.

Well...actually Because of privacy issues Movie Characters are often used to demonstrate how Psychiatric assessments are done and then presented to a court LtCol Kilgore Col Jessup (Jack Nicolson has provided plenty of complex characters) Alex Forrest (Fatal Attraction) Review the character in the films as if they were a patient, then defend or challenge that diagnosis given the limits of your legal systems criteria for criminal culpability and mental illness And Gollum is a common one for Mental Status exams How would you describe his Appearance and behaviours Attitude Speech and Motor function Affect/mood Thought and perceptions Then apply DSM criteria psychotic? Multiple personalities (disassociation)? And...one of the better "fits" for Gollum's behaviour Is substance abuse/addiction I don't know if Mr Serkis knew that when he took on the role But if he didn't, he is a very good amateur Psychiatrist

Never have I ever seen such a dramatic representation of an actor in the moment. In fact, in all my years of theater attendance/performing, television viewing and moviegoing, I honestly don't think anything could say it clearer: mo-cap is just the actor, all the actor. The rest is "scenery." Plus, Mr. Serkis is extraordinary, gifted and so ascended as an actor, which is not separate from being a person. The actor takes in the character, gives that being speech, attention and a space in which to be seen and heard. it's an amazing thing to become the medium through which an actor can vividly show a character as alive and real as anyone. I am in awe of that talent, and that vision.

With the original Apes movies, actors such as Roddy McDowell were rightly praised for being able to express genuine emotion through the latex make-up; motion capture is the direct evolution of that but one which allows the actor a great deal more range and ability to shine through. Andy Serkis is so much more than just "a voice actor", and to even say that shows how little an understanding you have of the art, Lisa.

Thats because he IS smeagol/gollum. Serkis wasn't just the voice, he was the body too. In order to animate Gollum, Serkis spent months in a motion capture studio where they captured his entire body language and motion for every scene. So when you see Smeagol/Gollum move around in the LOTR..that is actually Andy Serkis moving like that. That's why he moves and holds himself like smeagol/gollum, in the films it really was him.

Dylan Jakins It's probably more that the motion capture designers designed Caesar's facial features based on Serkis. That makes the motion capture easier to do, as they would not need as much tweaking to get the right expressions when it's animated.

Slightly related: When living in New Mexico I saw a man I knew in a grocery store and kept looking over because I couldn’t remember where I knew him from - legitimately thought he was one of my professors but I couldn’t remember his name or what class he taught and thought it polite to say hi, but didn’t want to seem rude. He walked away looking uncomfortable and I felt really bad about it. Two weeks later I was watching TV and discovered it was Fred Armisen 🤦🏻‍♀️

even more so, He created Gollum! (I mean, of course Tolkien created the original idea of Gollum, but in the original draft by Jackson, Gollum was supposed to be completely animated and they were just looking for a voice actor. Serkis kind of persuaded Jackson that they should do more, he invented the the whole visual mannerism and the speech patterns himself).

Sara Soderberg Was so pissed when he was slighted for an Oscar for his performance as Smeagle/Gollum. Wasn't right at all. He's a mega talented individual in the industry! Completely underrated like you said.

Oflightz, do you mean that he didn't performed it live?
@empireoflightz
@empireoflightz 7 жыл бұрын
No he absolutely did it live, but the live audience heard a much more normal human voice as compared to what you heard. You're still hearing his voice as he did it live, but with extra processing/distortion which the sound engineers added onto it afterwards for TV/KZbin.

oflightz That's not how it works. What we're hearing is what everyone else hears. Do you know what voice acting is? I've seen plenty of videos of Serkis doing the voice and it sounds exactly the same as it does here.

Colbert looks like he's thinking, "This is so awesooooooome!!!" the entire time when Andy Serkis is doing the Gollum voice. But when Andy Serkis turns to him at 4:39, he immediately changes his geeking-out face to a totally cool bro-nod!
