Hilde Bos - So you know Smeagol was his name when his cousin found the Ring at the bottom of the Anduin River. Gollum is what he became once he killed his cousin because of his lust for the ring. Gollum represents his tortured soul controlled and consumed by the power of "The One Ring - The Ring of Power". He was always Still partially Smeagol, which yes was the good part of him barely holding on. It's the reason Bilbo and Frodo took pity on him and spared his life. Anyway that was awesome to watch aye? Andy Serkis is amazing!

Never have I ever seen such a dramatic representation of an actor in the moment. In fact, in all my years of theater attendance/performing, television viewing and moviegoing, I honestly don't think anything could say it clearer: mo-cap is just the actor, all the actor. The rest is "scenery." Plus, Mr. Serkis is extraordinary, gifted and so ascended as an actor, which is not separate from being a person. The actor takes in the character, gives that being speech, attention and a space in which to be seen and heard. it's an amazing thing to become the medium through which an actor can vividly show a character as alive and real as anyone. I am in awe of that talent, and that vision.

With the original Apes movies, actors such as Roddy McDowell were rightly praised for being able to express genuine emotion through the latex make-up; motion capture is the direct evolution of that but one which allows the actor a great deal more range and ability to shine through. Andy Serkis is so much more than just "a voice actor", and to even say that shows how little an understanding you have of the art, Lisa.

Thats because he IS smeagol/gollum. Serkis wasn't just the voice, he was the body too. In order to animate Gollum, Serkis spent months in a motion capture studio where they captured his entire body language and motion for every scene. So when you see Smeagol/Gollum move around in the LOTR..that is actually Andy Serkis moving like that. That's why he moves and holds himself like smeagol/gollum, in the films it really was him.

I love how when he was first handed that card, he so very easily and so fluidly hopped up on the seat!!! Wow, such great talent. So very impressive. I remember reading about how doing that voice of Gollum left him with a sore throat and a real hoarseness afterwards. It is so impressive that he came up with that voice himself, from his cat hacking up a fur-ball.
