@I J Andy Serkis' performance as Gollum helped popularise performance capture, showing the world what it can do and how lifelike it can be. That doesn't mean that he's the first, or that there aren't other people who deserve credit, but Andy's contribution to motion capture cannot be overstated.

It belongs in the same category as LotR, Harry Potter, and Nolan's Batman trilogy, for that reason alone. On top of that, they're some of the most visually and emotionally engaging mainstream movies I've watched in years, carried of course by Serkis' Caesar. I usually don't find big Hollywood productions to be anything more than mediocre, because they insist on cutting out any substance, in favor of mass market appeal. Planet of the Apes managed to appeal to the common movie viewer while still having substance and depth. I wish he would have discussed playing Ian Brady in "Longford". I was fortunate enough to catch that a few years ago, and I was enthralled. I think he was on screen less than ten minutes, but his performance was chilling.

The fact that they essentially rendered technology just for his Gollum is absolutely insane.
