President Eisenhower warned us to beware the "Military Industrial Complex" in his exit speech. He was a General in WW2. General Smedley Butler wrote an essay, War Is A Racket, in the 1930's. He was one of the highest decorated Marine officers ever to serve.

Michael's cliff notes explanation of 1984 is like listening to a drunk uncle tell you about a Vietnam war story he heard from a guy who was there that he met a pool hall in Chicago in the 80s when he was working as an errand boy for a shadey Italian mobster to support his collage tuition to become a gym teacher. Meaning... it's so randomly incorrect it's hilarious. But all that aside, he got the spirit of the book and what it was warning people about right at least.

Read 1984 and A Brave New World. Drugs and the thought police. It absolutely can and will happen. It’s based on history. Huxley was also Orwell’s teacher at one point. They disagreed with exactly how it would go down, but were both pretty on it. Warpigs is a great song by the way…

OMFG Michal wins round 2 just based on the fact that he's read 1984 and Andy has not. Andy, buddy, seriously read that book. Actually its probably a good thing you haven't read it because you can read through a contemporary lens and recognize how so many of the predictions Orwell made way back in the day are coming true. Animal farm is a banger too and a really quick read. I highly recommend both of them.
@epistemologicaldespair689 ай бұрын
Also, it’s kind of shocking that Andy doesn’t know anything about 1984 that book was required reading in my senior English class. The book itself actually changed the way that I look at government, though I will say that there’s a stronger case to be made that Huxley‘s book brave New World is more applicable to our state of affairs than George Orwell’s 1984. There are a few similarities in our modern culture and 1984 such as front facing cameras on cell phones and laptops and the changing of language but if you read brave New World, it’s almost like a checklist you can go down and say yes, we do that. Yes, we do that. We also do that.

Maybe a little controversial but my thoughts. Anyway have a great week everybody! ✌️

I've been studying the various reasons of how and why people get sucked into various conspiracy theories and it's very fascinating to me. It's amazing at some of the wacky things that some people get sucked into believing in and with absolutely nothing to justify the belief. It's also aggravating and just plain scary! There is no shortage of BS out there for people to easy access but the things that teach skepticism and critical thinking are few and far between.

Try this one Michael, the 1st amendment isn’t about what you’re allowed to say it’s about preventing the government’s efforts to restrict what you say. Unfortunately for some sheeple there is no right to be comfortable, not offended, feel safe or actually be safe in the constitution. When I was a police sergeant I frequently had to tell people who wanted another persons lawful but awful actions policed “sir, it’s not illegal to be an asshole” they were not happy. This often was people of gen x or older to my suprise.

Books to add to your reading list: 1984 George Orwell Brave New World Aldoux Huxley We Roger Zamaitin Animal Farm George Orwell It's all about control. Netizen Derek Tabor When the AI is in control. Consider the ideas of some movies: Pre-crime Thought police Doublespeak Doublespeak is language that deliberately obscures, disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs and "servicing the target" for bombing),[1] in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning. In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language. Examples: War is Peace Freedom is Slavery Ignorance is Strength Almost sounds like the political speech we hear in the House of Reps right now. Love the show. They may be softball questions, but are they? For some people these can be hard because they don't have a real sense of how the world works. Thank you.

@ClearedHotPodcast Жыл бұрын

The First Amendment has nothing to do with allowing you to speak, only the government’s ability to restrict it. You can be held accountable under some circumstances for the byproducts of your speech such as inciting a riot or physical harm though, so strictly speaking yelling fire can get you in legal trouble or incur civil liability.
