Alex, your reaction to the crowd singing nearly made me cry. A lot of crowds sing along at concerts today, but when Queen hit the scene that wasn't the norm. By 1986, when this performance occurred, Freddie Mercury was the master of crowds. Just the wave of his hand and the audience did his bidding. This really is a beautiful song. Originally written for piano, they transposed it to guitar for live performances. Brian May mentioned once that it was very difficult to do because of the way Freddie wrote music. Great job Andy and Alex. Your reactions were priceless.

Well crowds don't often sing so much of the song, and this song never charted in the UK, so you would not think that the audience could sing it note for note.

What I find even more impressive is how, when they'd play a country where English isn't the mother tongue (and this was nowhere near as small a world in those days), the crowd would pick it right up as if it were at Wembley or MSG. See in particular the one from Rock in Rio '85 --spine-tingling stuff. What a band...
@ginny9577

@@NebulizerChi i think the first time that happened was in with this song in South America.. the crowd just carried the whole song.. they knew it word for word. I'm sure that there were songs that they did when they performed in Japan in the early days that had the same effect with the audience.

You may notice Freddie’s amazing voice cracking a couple of times. That’s because in this concert, his vocal chords were heavily damaged for constant touring, similar situation as his Live Aid concert. What he was able to accomplish during adversity was out of this world.

Aside from his throat/vocal cord issues at the time, I have no doubt his girlfriend Mary was on his mind, every time FM sang this song... which brought up emotions in him that made his voice just a tad 'unstable' - without fail. She was the love of his life, after all...

We reciprocate what they make us feel. If you feel them, show them! We're not expected to do anything. They give their love, and we love them back! The worthiness and loyalty between artist and fan are one. Hence loving, adoring and supporting fans, = hard work, new music... along with what brought us to our love for them in the beginning, brings us ever closer. A true, loyal QUEEN fan, means you're in it for life. If you do not feel this in your hearts, you're wasting your time. Check out a new shit radio station that plays new nonsense bullshit that you will forget in a couple months and move on the next new bullshit, and so on and so on. MTV first came to life on Sept.1, 1981, with The Buggles, Video Killed the Radio Star. When QUEEN stepped on that stage in Wembley, they killed all the nonbelievers perceptions of them. QUEEN are the true, real life, radio, video compilation of ALL TIME! Forever, and Ever, AMEN.

Alex's FACE when the crowd started singing was priceless. Freddie honestly could have told the crowd to go jump off a cliff and they would have thrown themselves off it with gladness. Anyway something else from this concert that's loads of fun is their little fun medley that they did after this, with all of them effectively goofing off. IIRC it's (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care/Hello Mary Lou/Tutti Frutti/Gimme Some Lovin' and they are literally just mucking around having a great time, it makes me so happy.

Some mega-stars need to hear their own voices, but Freddie's love and confidence allowed each and every audience member enjoy themselves. In this rendition, he let the crowd be the Superstars. A better show version of this song is indeed the Rock in Rio they showed in the movie. The crowd in that show is INSANE; it sang the song almost completely (and Freddie obviously let them xD) and was way louder than the Wembley one, and that's saying something. Anyway, your faces while watching the video were priceless ahahahah not that I can blame you, every time I watch one of Queen live performance I become awestruck (and sad inside because I'm never going to see one), also Freddie's control over people always leaves me out of words... He's not just in control of the situation, he's also in control of the people, which is not something every performer can do as well as he did, in my opinion.

A little background on this song. Originally from A Night At The Opera. The song is like a classical piece which Freddie gets to show off his rubato style of playing, and of course his vocal and writing chops. The songs is originally in C major and resolving in F major. They started to perform this song live in 1977 on the News Of The World tour. Since the LP version is so complex, they decided that a simple intimate version of the song was warranted, performed in A major. The audience participation happened organically, especially in Europe. When they released Live Killers from the 1979 Euro tour, this song is on the album and during the second verse, Freddie stops singing and Brian stops playing and the audience takes over. This was not planned at all. They released the live version as a single and was a semi hit in Europe, in South America, it was massive. It stayed on the Argentinian charts for an entire year. When Queen toured SA in Fed/March of 1981, and they performed this song, Freddie did not have to sing one lyric. The audience is in unison, singing in perfect English, considering the locals language was Spanish or Portuguese. You should look up vids from 1981 SA tour. And yes the audio from the movie is from the Rock In Rio gigs from 1985, which illustrate my point. Glad you guys liked it and your critique was on point. Keep up the good work and all the best.

Always fun to watch your Queen first takes - and inspiring to see a new generation appreciating what is probably one of the most impactful bands to ever perform live. Queen is unmatched - and perhaps now the masses will know why so many of us cringed when autotune first came on the scene. If you get a chance (and keeping with a different twist on Queen’s music, check out ‘Under Pressure’ as performed live by Ben Burnley (Breaking Benjamin) and David Draiman (Disturbed) - the KZbin video was posted a couple of years ago. A surprise duet during one of BB’s tours - the two bands went on to tour together later in the year. It’s always great to see current artists paying homage to Queen!

Name one person alive now who can recreate such a moment. How rewarding must it be to someone to enthrall thousands! The world really needs more music and less madness. As Brian said, inscribed on his statue...lover of life, singer of songs.

A winter’s Tale is a masterpiece. The last song Freddie wrote, it’s a work of sublime courage, beauty and love. It’s like a Bruegel painting in it’s lovingly detailed observation of the beauty in the small, quotidian details of life going on around a dying man.

If you watch the video of this song in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 81, they were surprised of how the crowd knew the song and they literally let the crowd sing to them. For Queen that was the proof of how big they were in every corner in the planet and how much the fans loved them.

Only Freddie could write a song with a few, simple words and a few notes, no frills, mostly in one octave, and sing it so beautifully. No Bob Dylan, not even Elvis, nobody will ever make you feel so emotionally involved with such a simple, yet powerful song. You can not help but just being transfixed at him in awe.

I love how you guys appeared to be completely transfixed on the screen! One of my favorite renditions of this song, there are times when Freddie has sang it better, but the emotion carries this one. It is also one of Queen's last live performances so that adds extra weight to the song. The live version is very different from the studio version, but the studio version also holds its own charm. It is also amazing to watch when Brian May performs this song live these days, at the end they use a clip from this concert and Freddie sings the last part, perhaps you guys should watch that. It is heart wrenching to see how people are still crying their eyes out to this day, when Freddie appears to sing that last part. Freddie was a very special performer, singer and frontman.

You should watch Hammer To Fall live from Wembley 1986 but make sure it's the one from the 12th of July, it is the best version of this song you will ever witness. A 10+ all day long!! One of the greatest love songs ever written!! Fredfie wrote it for Mary, and it was a song the truly transcended physical love. Freddie in interviews often referred to Mary as his common-law wife. He said they didn't need to be married (that was for other people) because he and Mary believed in each other. And it was all true...Mary stayed with him until the end, and Freddie left her his incredible mansion and most of his fortune. That is true love!

@@annieanonymous611 Wow! That's really interesting! I've heard, in documentaries, from living band members that he did write it for Mary. I've also read over a dozen biographies on Freddie and Queen, and several mention he wrote it for Mary. I would love and truly appreciate the truth. If you could send me the titles of books, documentaries, interviews etc. I would love to learn more about this. I have heard Freddie several times explain songs, and then contradict himself by saying the lyrics didn't mean anything. I have also heard Freddie get upset always having to try to explain his lyrics by saying that you wouldn't ask a poet about his poetry. But from all I've read and seen in the early years when he wrote this song, the song was for Mary. So please, please, send me all the documentation you have, because I am very interested in getting to the truth of this. Thanks so much!!

Hey guys. Thanks for making my Wednesdays worth waiting for. I used to hate the middle of the week before it became 'Queen Wednesday'. This song, I believe, was written by Freddie for Mary, his girlfriend before he 'came out' and who stood by him right until he passed away. It is an amazing performance, and the way the crowd joined in is very moving. Oh... and the looks on both of your faces was precious :) Many rate Live Aid as their best performance, but the crowd that day wasn't a pure Queen fanbase. This however was, and is one of my 'go too' concert videos when I'm in the mood for a rockin' good time. If I could recommend a show to watch it would be this one. I know some will say Rio or Montreal but they were both earlier in their careers and the catalogue of tunes that they had to call upon wasn't as large and I feel therefore the Wembley show has more diversity. Would love if you would do 'One Vision/Tie your mother down' from the same show. It's the opening track and shows how to get a concert underway and banging. Thanks for the awesome review, as always.
