So many learning guitarists press down far too hard to make their chord shapes or when playing anything. Some students call it ‘Gorilla Grip’. This exercise demonstrates how little you can press down with the right finger positioning, which should make everything so much easier!

No matter how hard you play, how light strings you use, how much you lower the bridge - it will hurt anyway. There's just no other options except to overcome pain till you build callosity on your fingertips. Just don't stop.

It's also important to remember that when your fingertips are soft (from being new or not playing for a very long time), you'll have to press down a bit harder, which hurts a bit. As your fingers get tougher (only takes a few days), you can press lighter, and should eventually get to nearly zero pain (except for some *extreme* high note bends, which *should* hurt because that's your soul coming through...). Practice!!!

Also, something that compounds the pain issue; is that until the fingertips are hardened, soft skin does need to press with more force than hardened skin to achieve the same net force pressing down on the string. The upside is, when the pain begins to subside, it can do so pretty quickly.

This is a great approach. It also should be noted that learning to relax your fingers on the fretboard is also a key element of chord or single note playing. Try tapping all your fingers loosely on a tabletop to get the idea and then transfer that movement to the fretboard of your guitar. The truth is you do not have to press extremely hard to ring a note, you just have to learn to relax your fingers and "target" the fret as Andy is demonstrating.

@27scole
@27scole 8 жыл бұрын
Nelson Cunha First of all don't worry about it. It's gonna settle in if you let it. There is no pattern to stick to. When i sing i naturally come up with different things, i don't even know what it is. So the answer is to familiarise with eight notes after the 1 then after the 2, 3 and 4 until you get a feeling. Then make it 2 and 4 or such and you shud be good to just strum and let yourself come up with something. Or maybe try 1, 2 a a 4 a. You know many people teach to count, i never count :) I just feel it and that's how i remember it.
@nelsondcunha3156
@nelsondcunha3156 8 жыл бұрын
27scole I know what you mean my uncle always say to I count 1234 but I think when I sing I don't need worry about how many I go down and up in strumming, so I normally play all down without need to count 1234.
@27scole
@27scole 8 жыл бұрын
it surely good to count if you have to to get familiar with something but i wouldn't make it a constraint. it's just a tool. when you sing you better don't think but feel. pretty straightforward stuff

Good advice, thanks, ~Andy. Remember that lighter gauge strings will not produce as much bass resonance than heavier ones. Sore fingertips come with the territory as do calluses. Keep playing regularly, don't overdo it and don't leave long time gaps between sessions. Keep those fingernails short too (unless you are a nail biter!) Love your guitar, even though it seems like it wants to hurt you!

Wow, I even played pro for a while and no one ever told me this. I just started playing gain and you opened a whole now world for me. After the last band I was in broke up, I quit playing. That was 12 years ++ ago . I got inspired and ;picked it up again, was able to relearn a lot quickly but I was killing my fingers. I ALWAYS killed my fingers, and could not really play good lead, I was mainly playing rhythm. After finding your video, I will be sounding like Garcia in a few months...really. At least I did rebuild my calluses quick! My neighbors are even hearing me from outside and telling me they had no Idea I was so good! So freakin simple. My fingers still are sore from learning again, but I can still use them. I thought I was going to have to stop for a couple of days, but no. the soreness makes me remember not to press so hard. I wanted to play "Looks Like Rain" by Bob Weir, and that is what really did my fingers in. Big UP to you ,Andy.

make sure you fingers are like almost standing like play on the neck with the very tips of your fingers and test how much you need to press down for it and practise that same chord with that technique over and over until it become second nature eventually even playing scales will be easier cause you can have the right tecknique

+ahmad ta I've been plunking away at the A chord for the last two weeks, the same problem with my first finger. I have to press down on it really hard and even then it's still vibrating or a just a dead plunk. Has it gotten any easier with Andy's advice?

+ahmad ta .... a good guitar helps .... if you got a cheap guitar it makes it worse . You still will get the " pads " on your fingertips etc... but trying to play a bad guitar will hurt a lot more . I have been around someones house and they have a cheap bit of shit .... after 30 seconds my fingers have had enough .... but on my guitars I can play for hours . comprende ?
@daveevans1410
@daveevans1410 8 жыл бұрын
+ahmad ta ... use a small dab of vaseline for a while on the tips of your fingers . Even after your fingertips get hard you should still use it . Your fingertips get so hard they end up with grooves in the middle of the pads and that can make you " click" string string if you dont get your fingers exactly right . Its getting that combination of firmness but not harshness on the strings . There have been times when I stopped playing for a few weeks to let the "grooves " in the fingers heal back because the string would slip back into the groove of the hard pad on the tip . It really pissed me off .

This advice goes hand-in-hand with setting up a guitar so that it's easy to play. I started on a very difficult instrument, and without lessons, I developed a white-knuckle death grip on the fretboard, which later took me many years to un-learn.

I find that wrapping each finger tip with a bit of masking tape does help ease the pain a bit, and it's easy to replace each piece of tape as it wears out, with little to no adhesive residue.

The number of ways picking up violin has helped me when going back to guitar, from working out how think about fingering melodies more efficiently to learning to loosen my fingers and place them with more precision, you have to hit the note dead on, the bow helps sustain with a fairly light pressure but you have to be dead on, I probably used the frets as a crutch, going back to guitar the inclination now is to get my fingers as close to the wire as possible and my hand has really slackened off, I still get the odd bit of pain but if I am practising two stringed instruments for hours everyday, that will be unavoidable, my skin ins getting quite thick now, I think there's benefits to be had in picking up a fretless instrument, even a cheap one and applying the same principals you learn there to your guitar, as if you use the death grip on violin, you cannot change positions effectively at all and it pulls notes out of tune loose small movements, hand free to slide, it's just as important, with barre chords too, if you are right against the wire, not only do the notes ring out better, but it gives you more reach!

Please reply: I've been playing guitar for a long time and i have calluses and everything so I'm not a beginner. For some reason i would get a sharp pain on a certain finger and it won't go away for about a two weeks. The pain is as if there's a splinter there but when i look there's nothing there and the pain isn't just there when I play guitar but also when i do everyday things with my hand. It's irritating because every time this happens i have to wait two weeks just to play guitar again. If you know what I'm doing wrong please reply. Btw i don't press very hard on the strings and i like to play the guitar tuned down a half step a lot.

I call it the grip of death , i have had the calluses with a permanent groove in. I have taken a couple of months off and want to try again, but this problem is starting again, would changing down to custom lights help. Chords like f major always have the ring finger further from the fret and the pressure goes up and skin is dented for the next chord and the pressure goes up some more then it's THE GRIP OF DEATH.

Just do like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Play until your fingers bleed and then put superglue on your am and stick your fingers on it. When the superglue is dry, tear it off and you will have some good callouses. On a serious note though my best tip is to just play. My fingers only bled once and i used this trick. It really hurt so don't do it unless your high on coke. When your skin is torn off it will grow bak again stronger and harder. So be happy and don't moan when your fingertips are falling off.
Fingers hurt from playing guitar? Try this!
