I used to train watch at the Bulawayo station as a school boy in the '70s. Theses are the exact same diesels, coaches and wagons from back then. I'm surprised they even still run! Nothing has changed one bit. No upgrades or maintenance, buildings very run down as well! Very sad to see a country's infrastructure so neglected. Guess we all know who is responsible for that. But thanks for showing.

Sadly there has been no investment in the railways at all. The few steam Garratts are kept running by the sheer will power of the handful of dedicated railwaymen at Bulawayo shed ..... Andy

Interesting. In Hong Kong the MTR is still running their G16 and G26 from the 60s and 70s. They are however rebuilt every decade or two and remain in excellent condition (brand new paint every few years, zero rust).

Considering there are no 1960's GE diesels in revenue service and very few 70's units as well in North America where these are from and plenty of maintenance funding I'd say they are doing quite well.

They're hanging on .... but only just! They're in a pretty poor state but that goes for much of the infrastructure in Zimbabwe right now! Andy

When I was a kid late 90s we used to walk from a high density area called Nketa to a RSPCA vet near city centre with our dogs and we would cut through this yard to take a short cut. Only ever took the train once from Bulawayo to Harare in 2000 and it was Ok then. I’m now in England working for Network Rail.

Hey, would you mind if I took a screenshot of one of the diesel locomotives here for a project I'm working on? Credit will be given!

Certainly a few old diesels, but also some track showing its age.

That telephoto view down the platform really highlights the awful state of the track.

It certanly looks rundown compared with my visit in 1994, back then the cariages were still decent looking and relatively clean, even to western standards, but now it all looks shabby and I fear the inside isn't for the better as well. Curiously enough the diesels which replaced the Garrats stood unservicable at the diesel depot back then when the Garrats still operated, the only type to be seen then were the newer class DE10A (EMD GT26) during my visit, when several of the older types had shortly before been withdrawn or stored.
