The line was built by italians in the 30s,ascending from sea level to 2400 m in Asmara in abt. 140 km. There are still a couple of diesel driven Littorinas working in passenger tourist service,all italian built.

Unfortunately, my information is that nothing is working at the moment and may never work again. There are no tourists, of course ..... Andy

It is so weird to see Maersk containers on a train driven by steam engines. It really is the old world meeting the new.

It is odd isn't it? This was a one off incident and has never happened again since. It's actually mentioned in the Wikipedia notes about the railway ....... Andy

I think the man is bursting of happiness to see his old railway in function again. if you look, he's an old man who was i bet a signalman before, and i think during war he likely abandoned hope of ever seeing the gutted railway come back in his lifetime. and then the backbreaking work Eritreans invested in bringing the railroad back to life. But when he saw that train roll past, that's when he really knew - the trains are back!

It started with 2 coaches and ended with 1. Where did it shed the second one? Great video btw
@AndyDandanFisherSteam3 жыл бұрын
You'll notice that there are no local passengers on board after the second coach disappeared. I have to confess that the passengers were only there for our photographic purposes! After they got off, one coach was shunted into a siding for the rest of the day ....... Andy

Does the line from Massawa to Asmara not see much use any more? I tried to follow it on Google Maps and in many places it was hard to find.
@MrBnsftrain4 жыл бұрын
so is this train regularly pulled by steam or are the steam locomotives just for a special occasion?
@AndyDandanFisherSteam4 жыл бұрын
They very rarely operate. Only now if steam enthusiasts pay for them ....... Andy

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam A pity. If they had a few diesel locos they could run a passenger service and perhaps intermodal freight to Asmara
