REALISTIC Model Railroad Weathering WITHOUT an Airbrush

Hello modelers! Today I do something that I've never done before! We weather an HO Scale boxcar without using an airbrush. This box car is a NMRA Winnebagoland Division Club car and its very close to some Milwaukee Road box cars that used to travel on the Marshline.
We'll use prototype photos to come up with a plan and add a very heavy dose of weathering to an Accurail Box car!

Moin Andy, Thank you very much to show your techniques of weathering without the ,,expensive" airbrush equipment. I never have seen such introductional learning and ,,how to do" video before, so please have a lot of thanks and please never stop sharing your very informative help for ,,weathering beginners like myself" your tips are very welcomed! Now you can say to ha in minimum one fan worldwide from across the atlantic ocean of central europe. Me I am modelling a fictional private shortline RR company in the year of 1908 when northern germany was part of the prussian royal imperial kingdom. I do modelling white meat reffers, too, which need a lot of weathering of the 2 or 3 axle wooden planked cars or the corrugated iron cars of the 1860's. Andy Dorsch Meant to ask. Is there a dullcoat application after the pastels and powders before the oils?

@@georgiasunbelt yeah, you certainly could do that. I like to build my weathering up in layers. Once I get a layer of powders/pastels where I like it I like to lock it down with dullcote, then apply oils.

Andy Dorsch Welcome, yes anytime you do a weathering video in will be watching. Any type of car is fine. But what I would find interesting to see is how to weather a well car with containers. I can't find to many videos on that. Anyhow, thanks man. Love the videos.

Loved the Video! I've been Weathering for over 35 years... And I love constantly learning new techniques!! 👍👍 Too many forget that for the best results, you really want to use SEVERAL different methods of Weathering on your Layout. Otherwise it looks like every piece of Equipment in your Railroad never leaves a 10 mile perimeter! Tank Cars weather completely different from Hoppers - and Flats. This method is DEFINITELY a keeper!! I wish I had the capability to make Videos like this. Just to demonstrate more variety. Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Very nice technique! Car is looking great. I really like the first MILW RD boxcar photo, I had to laugh when it popped up on the screen. Seems that image has been used by a lot of folks and even a couple of manufacturers, usually without the credit showing, but you left the copyright showing, thank you. I do own an airbrush, but in my old age I tend not to use it as much as I once did; too much work to clean up when only doing one car at a time. I found that if I tried to do an assembly line of cars they all started to look like they always traveled together; not good. This method works nicely. I'm considering building some protection blocks to screw in where the trucks go when weathering this way as breaking the stirrup steps is pretty common and adding the metal ones a pain. I don't feel like changing them all over to the metal ones so maybe a big piece of channel or even some drilled out box material might work for protection; this bears further investigation. Andy, Evergreen makes a box tubing - 256 - .375" (9.5MM) OPAQUE WHITE POLYSTYRENE SQUARE TUBING. I am thinking if I cut two pieces so that they stick out about half an inch on both sides of any given car, drill a hole in the center that fits a 2-56 size machine screw, then only on the bottom side drill or cut a hole large enough to be able to glue a metal washer centered over the 2-56 size hole, that might just do the trick. You could do the same with a bit of square or rectangular wood molding, only use a countersink to depth that a washer and a proper screw would still work. Of course, you'll have to be able to tighten the screw so the block is stationary, and this without too much pressure where you'd strip the threads out of the hole and not be able to re-tighten the truck screws. Athearn sells some half inch 2-56 screws and maybe 5/8" one too IIRC. If you drop this and then bugger up the original threads find some styrene tubing that will hold a 5-56 screws threads and drill the old hole out and glue this piece in place. @@AndyDorsch Oh, and also I frequently remove the floors (if possible) when weathering cars so as to have less stress on the stirrup steps. Of course with many modern cars this is impossible in which case the block thing should do the trick.

Hello, thx for the video. Looks like there might have been a bit of confusion about when to spray dull cote (or whatever). Exactly when should a spray be put on to protect what's there? And will the spray always be dull cote?

I would like to see weathering on steam era wood cars. All I have are shining new rolling stock. Have very little idea what it would look like. Sides, roofs, and ends. Any info would be very helpful.

I have been having difficulty finding them too since testors started to discontinue their Model Master Line. Tamyia works well out of the rattle can. Or regular "Testors Flat Clear"
