In this video I show just how easy it is to create believable and realistic weathering effects for freight cars. using a simple method and budget supplies, we take a basic budget box car and turn it into a presentable looking piece.
There are many methods out there that can produce excellent weathering effects. This is simply, one method of many.
A lot of folks have a fear weathering and the potential destruction of their models. With practice and experimentation on an item of less value, anyone can learn to weather.
Please be sure to help our hobby grow by sharing and subscribing to this channel. Stay tuned for more videos.

Doing more Trackside reruns. Always good to come back to your videos Joey. Love the way you show these methods. Think you really do a great job in helping people to discover their own artistic license. Just by breaking it down into understandable chunks. As to help reduce the fear people may have getting into their models this way. Anyhow, for my humble self; it helps getting from the initial brown rust blob to fine detail nuances. Plus, the method also gives a different perspective for other applications. Can’t say I use thinner on the ProCreate palette, but definitely use the colors to age my images.

Yeah, I did like that run. We qualified from Hagerstown up there right after the merger. At first none of the NW/SOU guys wanted any part of it so I held the small pool job for awhile until they realized it paid lots of miles and the hotel in Mechanicsburg was fantastic. After that it was hard to grab even on a vacancy.

Wow! Your car looks great! Thanks for posting. I also make my own weathering chalks. I use the same kitchen grater that you use. I just grind up some white chalk and mix some food coloring in a communion cup, then add my chalk. After mixing it up I pour it out on my cutting mat and wait for it to dry. Then I use a single edged razor blade and cut it up as if you were cutting out a line of cocaine. :-) Then I store it in the cup that I mixed it in. Works really great if you don't have the $$ to buy weathering powders or weathering chalks.

Is it just my imagination, or does light scatter through the medium of most paints (a little bit like a thin layer of wax)? If so, would chalks make for sharper and more realistically lit surface on most objects?

Hi Joey - Big fan! Does sealing your weathering with some version of dullcote alter your good work much? I have N scale so fingerprints from handling are my concern. Thanks!!
@tracksidescenery
@tracksidescenery 3 жыл бұрын
Any overcoating adds a film layer. I don't use it, but you could always try it. Who knows, you might even leave a finger print in the coating. Honestly, myself and most of the guys I know don't take cars on and off the layout much (handling).

I know this is years old but Im just getting to see it. In many of your weathering videos, you end with chalk but I never see you cover the chalk with anything to "set" it. Do you leave the loose chalk as is? Id think that any time you handle the car or loco after that it would screw up your work?

Question: don't you to seal the weathering dust to keep from being removed by normal handling of the finished weathered car? It seems to me that the dust will fall off or come off when you pick up the completed car?
@tracksidescenery
@tracksidescenery 7 жыл бұрын
Good question Jon - In the video I use "add bite" to describe the surface we are preparing and this is the very reason. The dust doesn't just fall off, but surely you could accidentally "wipe" some of it off. I don't seal any of my freight car weathering simply because I am not handling them much. The layers settle and if a fingerprint or something does appear, then I would just touch it up. I've rarely had to do that even with the display layout rolling stock . Handle with care.....

Another thing to be aware of when weathering with chalk then using a matte finish or clear coat it will make your work a lot darker than it originally looks so keep that in mind when weathering. A little light coat of chalk gets real dark when sprayed.

Thanks for the great video! However, there is one thing I cannot solve: where to get chalk in colors like brown, black, grey, dark red, and so on? The only supplier I could find, would be some high-end artist stuff, which would absolutely not be the budget type. I tried several of those craft store chains to no avail. They only stock those sidewalk chalks for children which only come in a lmited rage of bright colors. Could you please provide a retailer and/or a brand name of the chalk you are using?
@tracksidescenery

Usually larger craft stores or try ordering online from arts supply companies. Michaels Crafts used to carry the chalks I used in that video.

I took the body off the car and I have a plastic tub with some algae/maybe hopefully mosquito net current stuff, but… I took the body off, put it in the water, put cement on top, and the more decrepit uneven shaped little piece of metal that’s not a semi but a little more sharp it seems like seems to be working a little more better than/van the other more rectangular heavier piece of metal. But there still rusty when I found them or so, but just wasn’t sure how long it’d take or so
