Prince of the Sea is a friggin classic! I love everything about that cut. The groove. The two chord (basically) simplicity Larry Coryell and Al Dimeola playing with so much feeling. Really brings me to tears still.

I really appreciate all these Jazz Fusion talks Andy. Thanks to you I am now discovering some great music that I wish I'd bought 40+ years ago. So far I have a box set of Jean Luc Ponty and RTF's Romantic Warrior which are fabulous. Next up I'm checking out Stanley Clarke's albums along with Al Di Meola and now Lenny White too! Cheers and keep up the great work.

My favorite Lenny White album comes after the two you mentioned, Adventures of Astral Pirates. Heavy Metal Monster Machine and Stew Cabbage And Galactic Beans are two amazing tracks. It's one of those albums you have to listen to from beginning to end.

Fantastic follow up to part one and a great in depth look into all of the solo careers of the RTF members, one of the few bands where everyone not only got better together but thrived individually and have all gone to make fantastic music on their own. Very enjoyable insight and looking forward to part 3

I think there is a strong argument that the solo albums are even greater in there influence, esp. Elegant Gypsy and School Days
@WarhawkBeyond20402 жыл бұрын
That is very true especially as the composition style of their music is very heavily influenced by RTF

George Johnson is one half of the Brothers Johnson. Charles is Icarus Johnson. Please get into the David Sancious catalogue, since the pandemic he's not been able to play due to same thing that struck down Keith Jarrett with his tendons. You may prefer his earlier work as they're a little bit more rockier but I especially "True Stories" and "The Bridge" as just great albums. He straddles the line of Prog/Rock and Jazz/Rock with such ease. Ernest "Born To Run" Carter on drums is a beast on all the albums. Cheers.

No idea where Mr. Dimeola came up with the notion that LotMS was Jaco's first time in a studio. Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life had come out the year before. Kind of a notable record! He had also recorded with Paul Bley, Ira Sullivan, and Little Beaver, to name a few
@jazzpunk2 жыл бұрын
The Paul Bley album, sometimes called JACO (with Metheny & Ditmas), was recorded in 1974 (released 1976). Metheny's BSL was recorded in Dec 1975, released in Jan 1976 (Wow!). Di Meola's LotMS was recorded Aug/Sept 1975, released in Oct 1976. If wiki is correct.
@AndyEdwardsDrummer2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I thought the Paul Bley album was his first but I know that was recorded as almost an arts funded project and not a major label recording. Even the ECM album would have been a pretty low budget affair, the sort of recording Jaco would have already experienced

My dad had most of these so when I started to listen to Fusion in the late 70's this was my intro to this fantastic music and the piece that introduced me to Fusion was Egyptian Danza By Al Di Meola from the Casino album and then I saw he played on RTF and how all these guys were playing on each others albums so I recorded all of these on cassette and basically was blown away by all this fantastic musicianship. - But why didn't you also talk about the solo albums of Chick Corea who was making a string of Masterpieces in these years like the Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart, The Mad Hatter and Friends.
