I don't know how you can't be overjoyed by this song. This is one of the best and best sounding songs on the album. Harmonies, guitar solo, sound, vocals, lyrics. Absolutely the best.

I heard another excellent KZbinr (English Teacher KP) mention that the concept of this song could be an allusion to the 1924 short story "The Most Dangerous Game" (which Taylor hints at in the lyric "dancing is a dangerous game"). In the short story, the hunter gets a taste of his own medicine, and becomes the hunted. In the song, the con artists get a taste of their own medicine and get conned themselves, by love ("forever is the sweetest con"). The "perched in the dark" line makes sense in this concept, too. And of course, this whole thing could be a playful, literature-inspired metaphor for her and Joe Alwyn's relationship. Also, though, absolutely none of what I'm saying here could be true at all!

This song didn't stand out on my first listen through of evermore but I've loved it more and more each time I've heard it. The melody really grows on you and the lyrics are fun and romantic at the same time.

I love imagining that they become a team who swindle the upper classes together. And that bittersweet ending is so great, that it probably won’t last forever but it’s still the sweetest, most beautiful and sacred lie they’ve ever told because they do it together. I can’t stop myself from spinning and stomping when that chorus plays it’s such a heavenly beat drop, especially since you have to wait a bit for it to pick up pace. This song reminds me of when my partner first told me they did tennis lessons when they were younger and I thought about leaving them because damn that’s some rich people bs.

But is it 'never gonna love again' because he will love her and leave her, or does it mean that they will be together forever? 'Forever is the sweetest con'. I like that you can look at it both ways

This is the most Underrated song in the Album IMO.. This is my personal favourite.and I love the spund and the story in this one. I didnt actually paid much attention to it on first listen but it's definitely a grower.

this is definitely one of my favorites besides ivy and right where you left me. i’ll never get over her lower register and that melody in “and the skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to mess this up”. iconic and offensive bridge

This is my fave from both folklore and evermore!! The whole vibe is soo good, imagery, the idea, the harmonies, the guitar solo. I also feel like on a metaphorical level I can really relate to the lyrics. I think the song is bitter sweet. She's happy she found her person but now she's in such a vulnerable state that she's terrified to loose them.

This song reminds me of that movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, where they each have a mission to con each other but ending up actually falling for each other instead.

I never thought about it but you're so right if we take the happy ending version of the song hehe

I always think that this is sort of like Breakfast at Tiffany's set in a southern country club sort of place. Two attractive youngsters who capitalized on the attentions if older rich folks until they met each other.

this song reminds me of Sawyer’s storyline in Lost, just two con artists falling in love.

I think it is happy; a couple who didn't believe in love (but could fake it) end up in love. . . . . and Taylor and Aaron Dessner sliding cozily through genre's, with awesome harmonies; and Aaron's twin doing the orchestration; she sort of blends into The National/Big Red Machine the way she blends all different genre's for her own sound. Don't think you noticed, but Justin Vernon played on this too. . . . .

I get the liking the song but not being wowed. To me this is the kind of song that I can enjoy when I'm in the mood for it but other times I just skip it. I feel like the instrumentation is the best part of the song but in general is not to the standard I expect from Taylor.
