💘Never occurred to me at all! I took it as depression, not wanting to decide, not wanting to move on with the day. Sort of like a girl (or guy) changing outfits a dozen times before she makes up her mind to just wear jeans and a tee. She has clothes!! and lotsa closets. . . .they're not _all_ filled with cardigans. Or, dresses that she compared to a pop-tart wrapper in her film. 👍

Hi Andrew! I love the fact that you never skip the "speeches" she does before the songs. You need to watch her playing All Too Well at the reputation Stadium Tour, she uses an acoustic guitar and the "speech" before about how the she sees that song today is SO interesting! About folklore/evermore, you could make videos with three or four songs each, maybe? On the political stuff, you can listen to Only The Young (about the Trump administration and the school shootings in the US) or Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince (a big metaphore, comparing the US to a high school and how she got disappointed with the country when Trump was elected). Unfortunatelly, none of them were performed live, the tour both of these songs would probably be in was cancelled due covid.

I find it interesting how you keep mentioning the connection to the sixties, because the beginning of this song “my, my, my, my” is a direct reference to the titular song of this album, Lover (you’re my, my, my, my lover). It’s a way of showing the loss, since she never gets to say lover again. And THAT song (which she also has an acoustic version btw that you should definitely check out), is styled like an old sixties love song. This is why I love musicians analysing her work! Because stuff id never realised was likely a direct reference in her music gets pointed out.

Oh! And the comment about it being general is so spot on! She wrote this song after watching a recent Netflix movie about a break up, so the song is about that film. (Fun fact: the writer of that movie based the plot of the film on Taylor’s own song “clean”)

WHAT!! How did I NEVER make the connection of the “my, my, my” in this song and Lover. I literally just never even questioned why she says that after like the first couple of listens. Hahaha This is brilliant, thank you for pointing this out.

I think you’re the first person I’ve go so in depth with the lyrics and also analyze the chords to get a better understanding of the mood of the song, it’s so amazing. One detail I wanna mention is that when the album first came out, the line “I ask the traffic lights if it’ll be alright, they say ‘I don’t know’” kind of confused fans when we tried to understand the metaphor behind it. One fan got the chance to ask her about it in person, and she explained that the line was literal; she said that whenever she’s sad or stressed, she drives around and actually talks to herself. Since then I’ve assumed that since the song’s hypothetical, she probably imagined that if her relationship were to end, she’d do the same driving around and would literally ask herself if she’ll be okay, and since she’s alone, she gets no answer. It’s such a simple line, but it’s so specific and personal to her, while also being relatable because who hasn’t ever just driven around when they’re upset? It’s probably one of my favorite lines she’s ever written.

I also really enjoy how the “my, my, my, my” at the beginning and end are multi purposed. They do three things: hint at and call back to the bridge “my heart my hips my body my love,” call back “my my my my lover,” and add a great structural consistency, acting as bookends to the song. Triple whammies!

I like your hair/beard today! I'd honestly watch a two hour video, but I guess breaking albums into 3 sections 1-5 , 6-12, 13-end is how I'd do it. Because these are significant song pauses in her albums (fifth track being the most emotional, track 13 being her Lucky number and a significant turn in both folklore and evermore)

I'm so pleasantly surprised to see that you've identified the secret dork in her so quickly because that's one of the things that I think her die hard fans love about her. It's hard to see, especially when people have preconceptions, through the shiny image. Honestly, us Taylor fans would definitely enjoy a 2+ hours reaction for each album, that's not an issue. Also, don't worry about your segways, we like those too, at least I do. If, however, it's easier for you to make the videos/uploads per songs that's also ok but maybe upload them all at once (that's me being selfish wanting to see them all at once). If you're interested in more political songs of hers you can check out Only The Young and Miss Americana. Thanks for the video and the Seinfeld reference, got a real kick out of that one! 😄

The Dylan influence would make sense. She has said in many interviews that some of her inspirations are Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King so that's where the 60's/70's vibes come from. She has a song on this same "Lover" album called "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince" and that's a political song. I'm glad you mentioned her image, because she is a songwriter and I think people often think, well she's too put together to be anything other than your generic wrapped pop star, but the truth is that she is more folk/country than she is pop. If you actually listen to her lyrics and song structure of her pop songs, it becomes pretty obvious.

Taylor has a few more direct political songs. “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” is one but her more in-your-face stances are in “You Need to Calm Down” and “Only the Young”. YNTCD is the only one with a live performance though. Love your comments and this song is less specific because it was inspired by the movie “Someone Great” which is funny because the writer of the movie was inspired by 1989.

Taylor has always loved making this juxtaposition of putting sad lyrics onto happy sound. "All You Had To Do Was Stay", "Forever & Always".... there are a lot of them. There's also the song "Peace" from folklore where the lyrics says "no i can never give you peace" which she deliberately put on the most peaceful sounding track.

Yay this is one of my favorite Taylor songs! Also she wrote it specifically after watching a Netflix movie called someone great. I know she talked about multiple things but she said that it in interview. Fun fact the writer of the movie actually made the movie after going through a breakup and listening to 1984 by Taylor to help her through it so it was like Taylor inspiring herself in a way.

found a insta post by Jennifter Kaytin director of Someone Great which you can check out on Netflix .. "A couple days ago I was searching ‘Someone Great’ on twitter and found something curious. There were rumors swirling around that Taylor had a song on ‘Lover’ called DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS (written with Jack Antonoff) inspired by my film. Well. Turns out, it’s true. I’ve been listening to Taylor’s music since her very first album. As she grew, I grew. Ebbing and flowing through life; a musical North Star in her catalog. In the fall of 2014 when I was a certifiable basket case wandering around LA in pajamas heartbroken over the boy I’d left behind in New York, 1989 was there like a best friend with a bottle of tequila and a bear hug. I found the most comfort in Clean, a song about rebirth after love lost. It inspired me and Someone Great. And now, in the most surreal, what the fuck is even happening, full circle situation I find myself with a new song that will help me through heartbreak. “Saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts, flashbacks waking me up. I get drunk, but it’s not enough, cause the morning comes and you’re not my baby...” ❤️💔"

part of the reason why this song isn't as specific, other than it not being about a real breakup she went through, is that it's actually inspired by the movie "someone great" on netflix. most of the lyrics allude to scenes in the movie and a lot of them are very common breakup tropes. it's a good movie though

When you spoke about being used to sleep next to someone for years, and then you breakup and you have to wake up alone... it made me think of the lyrics in another TS song, "happiness" from the album Folklore. If you need a therapy session, this song will give it to you. "And I pulled your body into mine every goddamn night now I get fake niceties No one teaches you what to do When a good man hurts you And you know you hurt him too. Honey, when I'm above the trees I see it for what it is But now my eyes leak acid rain On the pillow where you used to lay your head After giving you the best I had Tell me what to give after that All you want from me now Is the green light of forgiveness". It's a very different, mature kind of breakup song.

hmm for folklore you may want to react to the longpond studio sessions on disney+ instead because she's basically performing it with her collaborators and i think you'll like that. She also talks about the songs after or before each performance. maybe you can do 3 songs at a time? (then you can listen to the album version on your own time if you want). for evermore, unfortunately there's no studio sessions for that yet, so you may want to do album version maybe 3 songs at a time :)

the opening with her saying "my my my my" over and over again, is eluding to her song lover, where she says "you're my, my. my, my lover" she no longer can call them that so it is like the outcome of what would happen if the relationship does not work out, it is also based on the movie "Someone Great" the bridge is to show how essentially someone you thought would never leave does and how the places you called "ours" are no longer that you can no longer say "oh that is ours" its simply mine or theirs and it shows how all the places you were together at were essentially your own little country and your relationship had its own boundaries that kept it within those places. With her no longer being able to say "lover" she shows that if her lover were to leave her she would no longer trust them and the line "papercut sings from our paper thin plans" kind of goes back into the idea of "you said it was a great love one for the ages but if the story is over why am I still writing pages" she's essentially saying that they had planned so much for the future only for her to be left alone and wondering what went wrong and if she will ever be okay again because he promised so much and gave her nothing while she gave him everything she could.

As usual, i really like the vibes of your reactions. They're chill and amusing. I'm not sure if anyone has suggested this, but if you were to react to Folklore, perhaps you could react to the love triangle she wrote about in the album. It's depicted across three songs Cardigan-August-Betty. It's very interesting to see the parallels. While other songs in the album may not directly refer to the love triangle, they also allude to it which i personally found very cool. Also, Folklore was more an album she wrote depicting tales and well folklore hahaha so it's not so much about her in case you were wondering if the love triangle was a personal experience hahahaha. (altho many songs, we fans feel still reflect taylor very much haha)

This is my favorite song from the Lover album!!! I love how much you compare the writing to 60s stuff because that’s my favorite decade of music and she’s my favorite modern artist. The line “gave you too much but it wasn’t enough but I’ll be all right, it’s just a thousand cuts” sounds like it could be straight out of Dont Think Twice, It’s All Right (which is probably my fave Dylan song). Also, Taylor LOVES an impactful bridge. Fans often call her the queen of bridges lol. She also loves a metaphor and using common phrases with a twist. Since you caught on to her subtle political message in there, another song from this album that’s a political metaphor is her song Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince. She disappeared from the public in late summer/early fall of 2016 after some overblown drama with Kanye and this song is about that time frame. It uses high school context to describe how she was feeling about the way she was being portrayed in the media and also her feelings on the political climate of the time. She only started opening up about her political views in 2019 with that album and on social media because she was always conditioned not to in her career. She talks about it a lot in her documentary on Netflix called Miss Americana. Thanks for these videos! It’s so fun to watch knowledgeable people get to know her music for the first time!

Love that you did this one - my favorite song on the Lover album by far! My personal take is that the "lawless land" lyric isn't a political reference; it connects with the previous line ("Our, songs, our films, united we stand / our country, guess it was a lawless land") and uses synecdoche or a whole-for-part metaphor to compare the relationship to a country that seemed to have rules, but then those rules were broken or destroyed. She uses synecdoche similarly in other songs (examples: "I can't talk to you when you're like this / staring out the window like I'm not your favorite town"; "my waves meet your shore ever and evermore") and often compares each partner in the relationship to something else.
@jocelynolea2991

Also adding as another example: she compares the relationship to a house earlier in the song ("I look through the windows of this love, even though we boarded them up / chandelier still flickering here"). She uses a similar comparison in a song on evermore ("my house of stone / your ivy grows").

A couple of lines I think are so cleverly written are "if the story's over, why am I still writing pages" and "I look through the windows of this love, even though we boarded them up, chandeliers still flickering here . . ." Genius way to get the point across that this person is not yet over the relationship, even though she knows it's over. The influences you mentioned are some I've heard her talk about before, and she also mentions Carly Simon -- I think that is evident in her writing style as well.

I'd love for you to react to some of P!nk's music. Her songs are quite a variety of styles, and her live acoustic performances are the best. Most of her "hits" you may have heard on the radio are good, but definitely not her best work, as you will find once you dig deeper in to her huge catalog. Her vocals are #1 in my book, as far as living female artists.

She actually got inspired by the movie "someone great". Its a romantic comedy. Its about a breakup, very sas but also it ends up in a very hopeful-bittersweet tone. Its not a GREAT movie, but its nice i think. It touches very well the breakup topic. And also, if you watch the movie and then listen to the lyrics, you can see the movie 100% reflect in them. even certain specific scenes.

Sound Vapors is one of the ones that does about 5 songs per video and seems to work well for him.

Andrew, nice job. I liked you struggling a bit with the meaning of the wine; and bringing in other songs. Three Dog Night's Joy to the World? um, my middle school days, lol. Don't know if it is pertinent, but for me, wine was for dinner and backyard barbecues. Safe, cozy, intimate, relaxed, and, especially, _shared_ . Friends and family. Inside my personal space. If I went out to a pub, it was a beer, pitchers and shots, or cocktails. I didn't drink much, though; never liked being drunk in public (just too embarrassing!) and hangovers, well, sucked.

Small-handed people problems! I can't do the non-barred version of the F chord. If my thumb reached the top string I just won't play the rest properly, and vice versa :(

I usually use the non-barred version myself, just like how it sounds more.

I remember when the Lover album came out, I was going through a breakup, was pretty recent, like 10 days before the album release. I was looking forward to the album and when the day finally arrived I didn't have the guts to listen to it. I think I went six months without listening to the album and I'm thankful for it everyday. Songs like this one would have ruined me 🤣🤣🤣

You could do Folklore while watching Folklore the long pond studio sessions. They play the songs and explain the meanings of the songs. But the lyric videos for each song on her channel are very good as well. I think it depends on what you are more interested in. For me her lyrics are a huge part and very important so I'd prefere the lyric videos. One video for one song would be fine. More songs in one video as well. :)

Hey Andrew! I love your Taylor reaction videos :) I am looking forward to your Folklore/Evermore reactions, but I am hoping you will do a few more live/acoustic reactions first 😁. I saw some comments suggesting that you react to "All Too Well" from the Rep Tour and I agree. "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" from the Rep Tour is also great. I would also really love it if you reacted to her preforming "Ours" live at Harvey Mudd. It's an older one, but its so beautiful.

Not sure if anyone told you yet but Taylor shared the movie this song is based on. After that, the author of it actually commented that she was listening to Taylor’s songs nonstop while she wrote it!

The crazy thing about taylor its that if you ask most people around you which song they know from taylor they are going to answer Shake it off and blank space. These Gold and precious songs like this one are Just hide Inside her álbuns.

I wouldn’t recommend for you to react and listen to 1 whole album of hers. It’s exhausting mentally, emotionally and physically and by the last four songs you won’t absorb anything anymore. A track by track video reaction would be I deal or 3 songs part 1, part 2 etc.

“They told me all of my cages were mental So I got wasted like all my potential And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad I have a lot of regrets about that I was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere Fell behind all my classmates and I ended up here Pourin' out my heart to a stranger But I didn't pour the whiskey” Honestly Folklore Has Her Best metaphors & Lyrics

She generally is very politically open lately, more so on social media but she does have some songs that allude to it (etc Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince).

If you want a specific breakup song. Try Taylor’s All Too Well in Reputation Tour. It’s a piano song but she played it there in guitars in front of 70k people 💖✨
