DECT phones are used with earpieces everyday for on-track bookmakers (bookies) at the race track for the last ten years at least. They are great because you've full, clear, duplex audio with a decent range, use low power consumption and rarely break. I supported users who ran these systems for a number of years. AMA.

Really enjoying watching. Started using DTR550 radios at a company I worked for 6 years ago. Had never seen them before then. Used standard radios at my last job due to them needed to meet the Class 1 Div 2 rating for certain chemical environments. Now at my current job using the DTR 700 They work really well. I bought the Motorola DECT 6.0 May of last year because we needed something with really good range. It does good as well. Didn't know about this ability with no phone line needed. Hmmmmm.....

These are actually updated version of the BT Elements phone which we have been using at work for the past five years. Can confirm they are very rugged as ours are battered and still work fine! With multiple handsets you can conference call all phones on the base station which is interesting.

I remember a review when they first came out of the US dect version back in the 90s?. They made a call across the Hudson river in New York and everyone was stoked

Cool Andy, thanks for the covering that. What would be cooler yet, would be if you could port the handsets over the internet. I did see this company that offers porting to SIP Trunks from DECT handsets: Connecting DECT Phone Systems to VoIP Networks - Patton DECT Telephone Systems deliver high-quality wireless voice communications to employees who roam within a building or campus. Popularized in Europe, DECT systems enable low cost, high quality, cordless telephony (using a single base station to connect one or more handsets to the public telecoms network).

Sipgate do it. You get a free number. All the calls over the sipgate network are free.

They used to do some really long range cordless phones back in the 80's. One of the brands was Superfone. We had some that would do 20 miles plus, it was like a car phone. We also had some handsets that would do 10 miles. Very illegal of course but a real pose to have a phone in your car back in the early 80's.

Modify the base station to accept an outdoor antenna and increase the power by 2% on the radio board and do the same with the handset.

Nice one Andy - just an idea for another vid. How about those old 31MHz phones that were used back in the day? get the base station up high, even get an external CB antenna connected to the base!

Andy what you could have done without anyone to pick up, is connect telephone line to modem, then rung your mobile, to see if it connected 🤔

Great vid Andy glad you enjoyed yer break rog......I remember the early long range analog phones there were awesome on range but often tracked down by dti and ofcom in the 90s as many like am cb were not meant to be used .....saying that used to live in a massionette on top floor and had and old standard cordless phone on 31 mhz and on just a 300Mw I used walk into town almost 3/4 of a mile and still connect to the base .....Great experiment well done

Great video.. I have a set of these branded as "BT" interesting to see that Motorola are behind them.. the base station is around head height in my understairs cupboard (where my phone line comes on) and with the larger antenna I find I can get to the end of the road, (250m ish) but as soon as a building gets in the way, the signal drops. Equally it does work well in my garden office (lined with celotex foil coated insulation) whereas my previous DECT phone didn't. I usually use mobile, but as I don't pay anything for the landline, I figured I may as well connect a phone to it. Can't wait for the next installment. Martin M0SGL

Great video very interesting how these work with out being connected to the phone network especially if they work with the base station running of a battery. Keep up the tests 👍

It would be neat to see how many handheld you can run off a single base and sticking a base in the center location and get a distance like that

How do I transfer these calls to the cortotell phones in work? What do I press to send the call to the extension/department without hanging up the call?

4:10 moms BT Wireless Home phones could do internal calls it was very interesting how they worked and maybe find a way to make the signal more powerful. but i will say i made it to dinner from up stairs after mom called me via that internal system to come down for dinner haha happy times

This type of tech would have been really cool when I was younger and a kid. A phone but your not paying for the cell service. Has a limited range but what kid is that far from home. But now with how popular smartphones are even with young kids not sure that really appeals to that situation anymore

Yes we are all reliant on smartphones now but when/if the Internet ever goes down completely then its always nice to have a backup plan.

Great test. You should check out LoRa messaging! I've been tempted to try and set up a little mesh network of little solar powered units in my area for private messaging.

I bought a couple of lorawan ESP32s a while back. Only suitable for short messages or commands but the range is impressive I was getting about 2 miles line of sight, 1 mile urban. (868mhz UK).
