Hi Everyone! What do you feel are your biggest issues with getting your resume noticed?

Hi There! If you let me know your specific job, perhaps I can give you some tips to make it appear more exciting on your resume. You can also highlight some of the greatest, different skills you learned in each job. Together, all that experience can show you're extremely knowledgeable about that job. If you let me know, I'll do my best to help you!!

Ok, what do you do if you have worked for very few companies or say none at all?
@andylacivita7 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I can help you with that. There are different answers depending on whether you have NO experience or SOME experience. Can you do me a favor and let me know: 1) if you have no work experience and, if so, which field/job you'd like to enter (I'll tell you what to put on your resume if I know what you want to do) 2) if you have some work experience, and if so, which jobs have you held and which field you'd like to enter (that will help me understand and cite how to apply what you'd do to what you want Hope to hear from you soon!!!

Last week I watched your resume building webinar and immediately reworked my resume and uploaded it on a job site and applied for jobs. Before I did anything else, someone saw my resume ( I hadn't applied to this company), emailed me for an interview and by the end of the week I was hired! Thank you.

Because people don't understand how many apply. I was Editor-in-Chief at a games media company and when we were searching for an editor, we got 10.000 applications per week. It was nuts. We've ended up hiring an HR agency because our two HR people and me were not able to handle all the applications to find the right editor within 2 months. By now we've automated a lot with filter systems even though you always run the risk of filtering out someone great.

Once I called her she ask if I can email her a copy of my resume. I did! I just thought that I would get another offer letter with an 😮the original salary that I askask for.. Instead I got an invitation to apply for another position at the same school making 50% more than what I originally asked for. Andy is right. It just takes 6 seconds for an employer to either qualify or disqualify you for a job. A useful tool that I use to make eye-catching CVs is Canva. Highly recommended. Would also just add to make sure you use correct spelling, grammar and spacing and check multiple times. How you write on your CV says a lot about you, and how good or bad you would be as potential employee. You don’t want potential employers to think you are unprofessional.

Hi ANDREW, your videos have been really helpful, can you please make a video on how to properly tailor your resume to a job description. Thanks
@lichitchyan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew! This is the 1st video I have watched. There are 3 questions I have right now: 1. What if a person has more than 10 years of experience and, let's say, 5 to 6 companies he/she has worked in? How to fit them into 2 pages along with some position description and achievements, education and trainings? 2. You say the list of (generic) skills shouldn't be there. Great, then how would I make my resume match the keywords of the job announcements containing those generic or specific skills to be matched to win the ATS? 3. You said the recruiters look for powerful companies in an applicant's resume. What about hundres of thousands of skilled immigrant professionals who moved to US, having worked in great and pretty powerful companies in their countries, about which an average American recruiter has never ever heard? What to do in such cases? No chance for immigrants to get good jobs? Thanks in advance for your reply.
@andylacivita7 жыл бұрын
Hi Liana, thanks for watching and thanks for your question! 1) It's okay to reduce the amount of information you provide on the earlier jobs. Still list them. Just condense the amount of information. 2) If you want to include generic terms (leadership, communication, etc.), don't list them. Sprinkle them throughout your resume and JUSTIFY them. Also, many people in my community recommend jobscan.co to check you resume match with job descriptions. Lastly, if you haven't already seen it, check out my video on how to build the ultimate professional resume!
@andylacivita7 жыл бұрын
Ooops. I just saw you had a number 3. I didn't use the word powerful to describe the companies. I mentioned good companies. Companies don't need to be household names to be great. There are loads of wonderful smaller companies too. For people who've worked outside the US, it's important to provide the brief description under the company name to explain what it is. Watch How to build the ultimate professional resume and you'll see what I mean!
@lichitchyan7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, Thanks for your replies. One more clarification here - I personally use jobscan.com to check my resume and cover letter match with the job descriptions I am interested in. One of the key parameters there, along with the keywords, is the word count, so adding information about companies might decrease the number of useful words that would better describe me, my capabilities and achievements.. Would appreciate your opinion on ATS (have gone through many of your videos, but haven't found anything on the so far), words count, and my reasoning on this comment. Thanks in advance.

Thank you, I realize that I am on the right track with my content in a 60-second ,but I don't like the format on my resume. My profile summary is evidence-based including my accomplishments that matches the job description. my main concern is narrowing down these jobs accomplishments for the jobs I held related to the new jobs.
@andylacivita7 жыл бұрын
Hey SweetCakes! Great to hear that. There are two parts to what you need. The resume itself: Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHywkH-QZdqdjpo. You can also check out my free webinar regarding the 3 secrets to get your resume noticed: app.webinarjam.net/register/26620/efd7a64b75. For how to optimize the messaging related to your accomplishments: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpiZgYOrmLGmfLs For how to punch up the capabilities and then map them over, check out my Live Office Hours I did a week or so ago called How to Change Careers Successfully. I go into detail regarding mapping your capabilities to the new career or job (where you might not have the specific hard skills). You can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWG8pZ6ZaqyAZpo. I would be diligent in looking at the potential job descriptions and trying to map the capabilities. You could also check out jobscan.co. You can also see a bunch more live office hours sessions in the Past Live Streams Section of my KZbin channel. Of course, there are also tons of other videos on my channel that will help as well. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Andrew. Having written (and rewritten) my resume over the years, I've noticed that today it's vital to be more deliberate. Several years ago, because of the economy, underemployment was rampant. Your tips about getting noticed are very helpful.

If a resume is two pages, should it be printed as two pages or is a front and back format acceptable?
@andylacivita6 жыл бұрын
Make them separate pages do the interviewer can take notes more easily.
@AnalyticalMenace5 жыл бұрын
Two pages, numbered at the top, and paperclip them together. Do NOT staple your resume!

Do you think it is important to have city/state for each employer listed on the resume? Assuming there will be a formal application to fill out if you are selected for the position which would contain that info for background check purposes. And do companies really contact former employers anymore? They are not permitted to say anything really except their job title and dates of employment.
@andylacivita5 жыл бұрын
Nichole, I include them, but it's not all that important. It's nice to show if you WANT the locale to be noticed.
@linamarie845 жыл бұрын
I went in for an interview and the hiring manager primarily focused on my dates. It really was just ridiculous. He asked me over and over about them and calling my employers. That's what the numbers are there for right? I always hope they call them. They will get an earful about how great I am. Lol I'm jk.

One biggest issue for getting my resume notice is that recruiters all view them differently. You mentioned to place your education in other areas on the resume, but others have informed me to place education on top, as part of the 5 second scanning method. Now I am confused but will try both ways.
@andylacivita7 жыл бұрын
Joan, if you are a working professional (and have been for some time), education matters little to most. This is based on my personal experience and annual surveys to tens of thousands of HR/Recruitment professional for more than the last decade. Accentuate your accomplishments, not something you learned in school.

This's very useful.I feel the same about the skills that everyone put in their resume like "detail-oriented,team-leader, etc" .It's your opinion and the person who reads your resume doesn't know anything about you. But what can you do,when recruiters use ATS and these bots are trying to find these spesific words in your resume? If you don't put them,your resume will never have a chance of getting in the hands of a person.
@brittanythomason32075 жыл бұрын
About the skills though.. what about the ats system? Wouldn’t You want those skills listed?
@andylacivita5 жыл бұрын
Brittany, great question. Yes. Yes, definitely list those skills. Just list them in sentence format so the ATS can pick the up. Skill 1, skill 2, skill 3 etc.

Hello Andrew. I left my last job in mid 2017, since then I have been unemployed but in full time study; should I still place my education at the end and have employers see that 2 year gap in my work history right away, or can I leave it at the start where it currently is?
@andylacivita5 жыл бұрын
You can move it up top if you'd like Rebecca, but I would keep the education below your career profile. Check my videos on how to build the ultimate professional resume and also the one I released this week on how to handle employment gaps!

I recently learned that they prefer summaries. Summaries, as he stated, gives the moment to brag about yourself instead of the objective which tells them what you want.
