Thank you for this in depth review, was really on the fence on going forward on getting a 883 as my first bike, as i have seen it works fine as a Beginners bike, of course heavier than your average ones, really good hands on review, you have saved me a good amount of headaches, now i shall just go and do a test drive myself. You have earned yourself a new subscriber.

+Kael K My pleasure! I'm glad it was helpful for you. The bike ws surprisingly easy to ride. Especially considering i've never ridden any kind of cruiser before. It was only a shock when I stopped and had to shunt it about. Quite amazing that I hadn't really noticed the weight up to that point! But definitely do try one out. I reckon you'll love it or hate it in a couple of miles! Good luck!

I have a 2016 and love it, great review! The turn signals will turn themselves off after a period of time, however I have noticed that if I lean a turn and then return to upright the turn signal automatically turns off. UPDATE: To expand on my comment above I have an excerpt from the owners manual: Turn Signal Switch Operation Top of page Operating Press and release the left or right turn signal switch to activate the turn signal lamps. The lamps flash until they are automatically canceled or manually canceled by the rider. NOTE: If a turn signal indicator flashes rapidly, a turn signal is not operating. Exercise caution. Use hand signals. Immediately replace defective components. Automatic Canceling The turn signal lamps automatically cancel when a full turn has been detected based on speed, acceleration and turn completion. The lamps also cancel if the turn signal has been activated for a prolonged period (20 flashes) while the motorcycle speed is greater than 7 mph 11 km/h . If the motorcycle is stopped or moving slower than this speed, the turn signal continues flashing. Manual Canceling To cancel the turn signal, press and release the turn signal switch a second time. To activate the opposite turn signal, press and release the turn signal switch for the new direction. The first turn signal cancels and the opposite turn signal lamps begin flashing.

I'm looking into buying a bike. I'm not new to riding, used to do motox. I've looked at a lot of bikes. I was thinking of buying the GS800 BMW for commuting but I really miss the sound of my crf450 roar so the GS wasn't good enough for me. Until my father told me about the 883 Iron. Ever since I laid me eyes on it, I was in love! Your review convinced me to take the next step! Safe riding my friend!

I have a 2019 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Iron also. Love it. Take your mirrors put them on the opposite side and mount them from the bottom. Much better that way. The first thing it did was replace the gas cap with a locking cap.

I have a 2004 XL 1200 Custom I bought new in October '03. It has the same turn signal setup as this bike. They do cancel after about 15 seconds but only while rolling. They also cancel as you come out of a turn, if you've leaned into it far enough. As for the fork lock, I once forgot about setting the lock and took off into traffic at a seriously hard left turn. In my panic stricken mode I strightened the front end, snapping the fork lock! Since then I carry a beefy padlock to put through the holes in the front disc so it can't be rolled more than a few inches.

Ah, good to know. That'll be why it stayed on at the lights then. It's a bit crazy that pulling away with the steering lock is possible. Considering the cheapness and simplicity of the switch which kills the bike if the centre stand is down. Surely they could just transplant that into the steering head somewhere?! Anyway, glad you had the Strength to break the lock rather than crash the whole rig! (Impressive btw!)

great review I have owned my sporty since 99 and its a 96 883 and I often think of buying a bigger bike but then I go for a ride and say no way I love my sporty it just feels right for me .one thing that I noticed in your review was the indicator issue how you said it will turn off on its own , on my bike if I'm at a stop and signal is on once I start to go it does turn of as soon as I hit 30 kmh I think the new models do the same .keep up the great vids brother and ride safe

Enjoyed your 883 iron review. Having had a 883 sportster you only have "half the bike" until you put some Vance&Haines short shot exhausts on and stage the carb/air filter... then it is a decent bike.......keyless ignition really!!!!!! lol
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 9 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought! "REALLY?!" Kind of like a navigation system on a BMX! I'm sure the sportster is far more bike. I'd have welcomed the extra noise at least!
@Volatile42
@Volatile42 8 жыл бұрын
The thing with the steering lock is that before the keyless ignition days, Harley Sportsters used to have 2 key holes almost next to each other on the right hand side. One is the mechanical steering lock that you saw, the other was the ignition key-switch. Now with keyless ignition they have removed the ignition one completely by the steering mechanical lock remains. Mine is a 2013 Sportster and I have to actually turn on the ignition with the key and also have the fob in range for it to start. But even in mine it's possible to ride off with the steering locked (I mean crash)! The fuel cap another thing where Harley want to take your money by selling you a lockable cap separately.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 8 жыл бұрын
Brilliant! Short sighted Grid iron engineering at it's best! Surely there have been lawsuits about this already?! :D
@Volatile42
@Volatile42 7 жыл бұрын
Andy Man Cam Haven't heard of any lawsuits but would be interesting to find out. I think the separate steering locks were common on older bikes. I mean really old! Not sure when the integration ignition and steering lock key-switch came about. But nowadays with completely keyless ignition wonder how other manufacturers deal with the steering lock. I know there are some BMW's like the R1200GS that have a push button where the keyhole would be. It's used the turn the ignition on or off but can also lock or unlock the steering using a electromechanical system. Expensive and probably not the best thing to rely upon.

Good review and pretty funny stuff. I'm split between the street 750 and the iron 883 for my first bike and have been watching countless youtube reviews for help. Still struggling. I know everyone says I should get a smaller cheaper bike for my first bike... but i've always wanted a harley dammit.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Priestley I honestly think that the only advice i could give you is to at the very least sit on one of each. They felt instantly different to me. The 750 was noticably smaller whereas the 883 felt a little more spacious and relaxed. Those few seconds can make all the deciding easy! Either way, go with your heart mate. You're supposed to love your first bike!

Sadly I'll never get any sponsorship that way, but hey, maybe I'll get more subs and views as a result! I think it also helped that I was pretty clueless climbing on to this machine. You just keep the key in your pocket and hit the start button. Probably means you could be stood next to it, and since toerag could jump on and ride off!! Not sure about the alarm though. I didn't think to try that.

Properly good review, I have an er6 Kawasaki and I'm after something about more relaxed and characterful do you think I'd miss the extra power on one of these as I love the looks and the engine note
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Al. TBH i don't think you will miss the power. The Harley has such a flat torque curve that it just pulls, from almost no revs. And because of the V-twin setup it's really nice tractible torque too. I would also say that it pulled from down low harder and smoother than my Versys. Considering the Versys has the same engine as the ER6 but tuned for more low-mid range i think you'll find it just right!

Enjoyed your vid and comments, as someone who has just acquired one of these I would love to do a vid but dont think I would be too good at it, instead I would like to comment here if I may! Agree with everything you said, but would elaborate on: turning circle, well you need a field to turn it round: engine noise, need to change exhaust: engine heat, in traffic in hot weather its like sitting in a furnace: but the worst by miles the ride, its like sitting in a wheel barrow with Shrek pushing you down a gravel pit- Ive had to change rear shocks and front springs before my spine disintegrated- no joke!- but yes it is great looking, attracts attention and pulls and handles very nicely. Dunno where I'll go from here but at least I have owned a Harley now. Thanks again

The fact you can start it with the steering lock on and the fuel cap might as well be cling film = not for me ;-) I rode a Harley in the US and took it back for a Kawasaki tourer..it's all down to preference I know
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 9 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on those points. Both seemed a little short sighted to me. It was enjoyable enough for the hour or so i had it and i'd have happily kept bombing around on it. But i could see a few potential problems with doing any extended touring. As you say it's personal preference. If you wanted a Harley so badly, I'm sure you could make one tourable. But I'd rather something that was designed for the job in the first place!

I was gonna say less hp than the 883. But I cannot find any reliable data to support that statement. I was going off of a motoblogger who I found out from a different that he had done some modifications such as hi-flow ar cleaner, hi-flow exhaust, larger cam, etc. Even HD's own website doesn't give hp data, just torque. I found some data on SR 500 & 750 are so new on the market, I thinking there may not be very many mods to do on these bike. Plus I will not be doing a lot of Urban cruising. New to all this and still doing diligent research. Pardon the error in my typing in my initial post.

An upgrade with free breathing air cleaner, better breathing exhaust, tuner and then have it remapped by a qualified shop will make big difference in power and torque compared to stock. And it will of course sound much better.

Someone told me filtering wasn't allowed in Germany - is that true do you know?? I'd love a go on a Harley but I must admit this one doesn't look very exciting...but I shouldn't draw any conclusions until I've ridden one. Thanks for posting, all the best! - TMF
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there TMF! Sadly filtering is a bit of a frowned upon issue over here. It's not clearly and strictly forbidden in the letter of the law. But at the same time it's only sort of not banned due to the vagueness of the rules that semi allow it! (Clear as dirt, I know). The worst part, however, is not the legal side of the matter, but rather how car drivers react to it. Last year my attitude to filtering changed rather drastically when some wingnut in a BMW decided I didn't ought to have gotten in front of him in the traffic, and so he thought it pertinent to ram me with his car. So fixed in his self righteousness was he that when I demanded he pull over for a chat, he promptly called the police to expose my heinous wrongdoings. When I then asked him why he'd tried to kill me, his answer was simply 'because what you did is not allowed'. I actually received a fine for overtaking on the wrong side leading to third party damage. But I contested this and it was quickly thrown out. Insult to injury, I lost my no claims over that one. But remained positive because it could have been so much worse. In any case, I filter very rarely these days and more because of the risk of altercations than fear of the long arm of the law! As for the Harley, this is a bit of a weird one. Many puritans would probably deem it too small to be a 'real' Harley. But it was more fun to ride than it looks. Light enough to chuck a little bit, but big enough for a little presence. The motor was surprisingly tractable too. I'd also quite like to have a blast on something really over the top sometime. A Fat-Bob perhaps. What would tickle your fancy?

+theGman454 Hard to really say as I didn't get to ride the 750. But the 883 definitely had a far superior feeling build quality. Everything felt better put together. Also it was much less cramped than the 750. The only way to really tell will be to throw your leg over each. It'll fit or it won't! 👍

Harleys definitely have a "feel" to them. They vibe like crazy at idle, but they are designed that way to create the shake that old Harleys were known for, they smooth right up once you're going. The handling is ... leisurely, but they are easy enough to ride at low speeds provided you're willing to slip the clutch a lot (at least on ones bigger than the 883). I've never had much of an issue with Harley bikes, aside from some of them being incredibly overpriced, but the attitude of many of the Harley riders (at least in the US) can be quite annoying, it can be a veritable grand tour of every bad stereotype about Americans.

@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 8 жыл бұрын
+Adventure Rider If I had enough cash to buy it as a second bike, then most definitely. It would be really cool to have a lazy ride out on sunny Sundays. But as a main bike, it just doesn't tick enough boxes for me to fill the main spot in my garage. Plus I would always have a little fear over reliability. I know HD are getting better, but they're still not up to Japanese standards just yet!
@ReflexionesMoteras
@ReflexionesMoteras 8 жыл бұрын
I tried it the other day. The one thing I disliked is the riding stance with the footpegs below the seat. For tall guys this is a bit uncomfortable. I would change them to forward position and there is a mod for that for $500. I think it is a fun bike but as you say good for sunny Sundays.

Funny how a old. Yamaha Virago from the 80,s. with a smaller engine. Than a 1200 still out perrforms the modern Harley...more horsepower better ride and more dependable..good thing for Harley that most tbeir customers buy for the image ...

Andy Man Cam but the difference is luxury brands are offering a inherit value as far as a better ride more luxury and comfort. Harley is offering nothing even equal.... that's the sad part and The. Brainwashed Harley sheep continually are suckers for the image and they are getting a less quality bike less dependability more expensive to maintain. I don't care what year Harley even the 2018 s are not as reliable ...Brand new top of the line Harleys cha-clank between gears. My friend is VP OF of a 99%er club with several hundred members..The club started in the 30,s. They mainlyhave cruisers & touring bikes... Honda Kawasaki Yamaha Suzuki BMW INDIAN Triumph and of course Harleys.. To get in this Particular A.M.A endorsed but private club,The main thing is you have to be a citizen in good standing with the community obviously be able to ride and go through probation attending the majority of all meetings and club events unless work/family/health issues.This can take up to 3 years but the point is to show your character dedication and loyalty.Now most every member is affluent enough to buy any brand of motorcycle. Point being after close to 90 years of existence and going through literally thousands of all brands of motorcycles with in house mechanics and meticulously kept records and breakdown statistics Harley Davidson even the new generations ahave twice the mechanical problems and they gethalf the life compared to Japanese bikes. Harleys are just horrible overall.So sad to say that but its true.
