I don't know why, but there's something mesmerizing about watching a POV video of a motorcycle ride. Maybe it's because I've been wanting to buy a bike.

Glad you opened that 883 up a little. I bought an 883 brand-new in 1993 and still have it. Harley Twin-Sports, 883 racing was going full blast then. My plan was to build a Twin-Sports engine with about 60 HP for the street so the first thing I did was put a Screaming Eagle aircleaner kit on it. Felt like it picked up about 5 HP. Then I found a Super Trapp 2 into 1 exhaust. Like you, I felt the difference! Next I put a S-E ignition module in. Seemed to help off-the-line performance. There's a few other things I've done that I won't go into but I'm about 60HP at the rear wheel and it's gobs of fun to ride. It'll cruise at 80 and surprise people top end. The beauty of the 883 is you can make it whatever you want it to be. Cruiser, chopper, racer, or tripper. It'll do it all! PS. If you really want to make a difference, put H-D, Dunlop 591 V Rated tires on it. Problem is then you'll need to put a spring kit and better rear shocks on to take advantage of the tires! It'll just never end but you'll love it!

Hello Shawn, I was at a Harley dealer and saw a sweet couple n their 60's on a 'souped up or stage 1'd 883, they came down from Jacksonville to see family, they were VERY happy with their Sporty 883.

Thank you my friend! Figured I get something not insane or killer as a first bike and a new rider. Also, excellent vlog; I appreciate your maturity and interest in your bike. You made some solid points about crotch rocket riders. I'll definitely show this video to a good friend of mine who wants to start off on a 1000cc sport bike, and hopefully this changes his mind and makes him think twice.
@atomicdeath108 жыл бұрын
+Ramy Warda If he is wanting a Liter bike as his first, he will probably be killed. Unless his maturity level matches the bikes, it could only end badly. While spending the money twice on a starter bike then on a better bike can hurt. But nothing beats safety, and living to ride another day. My advice to your friend is to start on a SV650, or something similar. Lots of fun can still be had on smaller bikes, dont buy into the "Gotta have a Liter to have fun" craze, because its horseshit.

I'm 19 and got my first bike last summer. 2008 CBR1000RR. believe me when I say that that shit is not needed on public roads lol. does almost 100mph in 1st gear. there's no need for it. got my first speeding ticket a couple months ago and now I'm getting rid of it before I hurt myself or someone else. looking for a Harley now. I should've listened to my parents when they told me I shouldn't get a sport bike lol oh well. live and learn

Finally!!! I found a Harley Vlogger!! I was getting tired of watching the sport bikes not that I have an issue withthem but want to see more of my cup of tea. Well I live in Wisconsin and finally bought my first bike! A 2016 HD Iron 883 with upgrades. I ordered it and paid for it on 3/26/16. I'll have it about mid April. I take my course on April 7-10. My upgrades are V&H Short Stack exhaust with V&H Grenade air intake, 1200 conversation kit, tuner, new air horn! Thinking about doing a video when I get it home. It's the Olive Gold color! I'm beyond excited. Wanted to share my excitement! Enjoyed the video and yes I subscribed. Thank you!!!

Love ur videos, Ive got a 2004 Harley custom Sportster...my first ride in 30 yrs. I picked it up, 50 miles later I arrived home safe and sound. I'm so glad that I drove it instead of having someone drive for me..I called it a death ride cause I was very rusty, but picked it up super fast.. Tell me about the mirrors, have never seen them flipped????
@ShawnSmoak5 жыл бұрын
Gotta love the Sportsters..! With the mirrors, I basically copied the look that Harley uses on the Sportster Forty-Eight. Took the right mirror and mounted it upside down on the left side, then left to the right... This only works with the low bars on the Iron and 48, as you usually can't see through inverted mirrors with taller handlebars. If you try this, be very careful that the mirrors don't crash into your tank at full right or left turns..! Thanks Tessa!

Jason Martin: Actually the Harley Sportster is a very well-built, reliable, bike, with 4 cams and left side final belt drive, which is very easy to change out, unlike the big twin H-Ds, which are labor and cost intensive to change out a final belt drive. The Sportster line still uses the great EVOLUTION engine design, a proven design with metal gears for the cams, instead of roller chain drives for the cams on the TWINKIES, with their pressed together flywheels and PLASTIC cam chain tensioners, which are a wear item. So, there you have it...........something nice said about the Sportsters.

I just got mine not too long ago, am so in love with it its ridiculous! Its a good spordster and it does more than just commute. Its great through the turns and if need be I can definitely outfit it for distance. Sportbikes you can really only ride for so long from state to state, but even this little monster can relax you through all those miles. It eats them away as you're having fun and to just enjoy reclining and enjoying the view, not speed speed speed especially near a mountain or alongside a beach.

Once I heard one guy tell me that he was very stressed in his job. And a good friend recommended him to buy a sport bike (one "RRR&++R"... with a great performance numbers) and use it in amateur's circuit race on weekends. He do that and... he finish more stressed and with several muscle contractures. The best motorcycle is this one who transmite you good sensations. Simply like that. We are different people and we have differents expectations. They are a lot of good bikes, that's really difficult is find "our bike". Well done, you do it...

I know what he is talking about. My 06 883 which I have gradually put... what would make me even happier with it on the bike. After buying it I road it home which was a hundred mile trip. I bought it used. First ride I got ice stinging my face and was wearing a helmet and glasses and decided that a windshield like I had on my Honda was a must. One that would cover my hands and I could duck behind if needed. Second was some spill bars for the front which would hold my fog lights. Then after riding it, I wanted new rear shocks and clutch plates. I later put on a new set of tires and brake pads along with hard saddle bags and some small carry bags for items when I took some day trips in the mountains. I want a good set of pipes on it that doesn't scrape the ground when I go around a right curve and I think my list will be complete. My little Chihuahua loves it too and can't wait to get on and go. I just can't stay off it for long, and make up any excuse to ride. Just love it!

I know how you feel about the Iron. That's the same way I feel about my 72. I imagine we all have a bike we feel that way about, maybe even more than just one. It's hard to keep the speedo down where it's suppose to be The thing I worried about when I lived in Oregon was the damn deer running out in front of me. Happened all the time but never hit one. I had a lot of close calls thou, so you be careful out there I always hang in to the end of your vids

I already have a 1993 883 Sportster Deluxe in Black with racing pipes and the racing air cleaner kit (includes a mini velocity stack) and a non rev limited black box with a faster ignition curve lastly a racing fork tube brace for better handling. I raced everybody and everything back during the '90's. I am now looking for a new 2015 Harley-Davidson once again. Your video has me thinking of an 883 as an excellent choice AGAIN! I am no longer interested in speed, just fresh air and a rolling view of the sky and landscapes as I rumble along-slowly. I agree about the brittle bones thing because last year at age 63 I wrecked my Honda 750 and it has taken over a year to get back to a near normal walk. Broke a lot of bones this time - I did! Still I love motorcycles and Harley-Davidson's. Thanks for your excellent video man.

Hey Shawn, I did nearly the same mods on my 2003 883 Sportster. I had only 3/4 inch holes drilled in the baffles but also had the SE air filter kit and the carb properly rejetted. You are right as it really made a good power difference. There is a sight online that had dyno run of the bike before and after and the air filter kit alone made an increase of 6 rear wheel hp.
@TD402dd9 жыл бұрын
Shawn, I think you broke it. Maybe you should take it to the Harley dealer and have them fix it, so it doesn't rev high. All joking aside, it's nice to see someone happy with the 883 instead of calling it a beginner Harley (which isn't true).

Hello Shawn! For some reason, (maybe because I'm getting close to 40's, who knows...) two years ago I found myself looking and looking the Iron (without motorcycle license at that time) on the Harley Davidson site. The Iron was the reason that I got my lessons and the motorcycle license this summer. Now, as i am looking at your nice machine I try to collect the deposit amount of money to buy the Iron as my first motorcycle ever! Many other, cheaper options, have been crossed my mind since then, thinking also the difficult economic situation here in Greece but I am getting close now and I think I will do it in maybe 5-6 months from now if everything go well. One question: You think it's "smooth" enough for a first bike? (883cc's first bike). Thank you man for your videos! They are a very nice way for me to see and have a good opinion about this bike! Take care and stay safe!

Hey Ilias, That's cool that you're looking at the Iron as your first bike! They make a great bike whether it's your 1st, or you've been riding for 42 years... They are just pain fun! They have a rumble to them that non Harley riders mistake as vibration. But it's a soothing and satisfying feeling that will have you addicted to Harley's forever... Subbed, man! If you were a sales rep at HD you'd be responsible for an even greater upswing in 883 sales, I'm sure of it! The Iron is a beautiful bike.

I drive a shadow spirit 750 and had the opportunity to test drive an iron 883 and a street glide a couple days ago. I liked the iron 883 A LOT. I mean you can tell the difference on the quality from my shadow to the 883. I even thought it felt lighter. Man maybe one day I'll buy one, mean while I'm really happy with my shadow. It does everything I need it to and more.

I just bought an 883 but I haven't gotten my motorcycle enforcement yet, Oregon requires you to take a safety class which is all well and good, but they are booked out for months now. Luckily I booked my class last week and it was half the waiting time as compared to now.
@KingOfRotterdam168 жыл бұрын
+Josiah Baumgartner you only have to do 1 test in the US?
@josiahbaumgartner76438 жыл бұрын
+KingOfRotterdam16 It varies state to state but in my state you need to take a safety class and at the end of the class they give you a knowledge test and a riding test. If you pass both then they give you a certificate to give to the DMV to get your motorcycle endorsement on your license.
@KingOfRotterdam168 жыл бұрын
thats nothing, here in the netherlands you have to take lessons of 20 hours total, then you need to take an exam to prove you can handle the bike, then an theoretical exam to prove you know the rules on the road and then u can take your final exam wich is usually a ride through the town. Total costs around 1300 euro's.

+KingOfRotterdam16 The class takes about 20 hours here too.

That's a GoPro remote on your handlebar. How do you connect your helmet mic with the Hero? What is your arrangement? PS. You sold me on a Spyder. I have one now.
@ShawnSmoak5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s a GoPro remote. I mount the GoPro on the chin of my full face helmet, stuff a mic under a cheek pad and run the wire out to the camera. There are hundreds of videos of folks showing the exact setup I’ve been using for many many years... Lol Congratulations on the Spyder!! Thanks Robert!

Sporty's ! No plastic or fiberglass cowlings,no plastic saddle or fenders way above the tires, Hey Shawnn , Michael Parks, who played in the series 'Then came Bronson' rode an 883. at the time H-D was calling it a 900. The XL 1200 is really a 1207. Mine's got 2 plugs per cyl. she's gonna b street legal pretty soon. 2 thumbs up!

Cool video man I actually like the longer videos, too! I'm super jealous of how comfortable you seem while riding! Been thinking about getting my first bike, been leaning towards the 883. Nice bike man keep it easy. 👍#subscribed

How are the peg feelers? My XR1200 has no probs in tight turns and leaning over. My Dyna has foot boards and does not lean well at all without some scraping in leaning. It wants to lean but metal grinding on tar occurs. 883 is not for 85mph four lane Autobaun for hours at a time. It is for those two lane relaxed and enjoy tours.

Great comments man I'm tired of speeds & on the edge riding position too. First bike was Honda CB 1300. Now I have a 2013 Ninja 650 Just want something with character to cruise with.
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! On the surface, it may seem boring to ride something like this, but they're very satisfying and full of character. Plus you never have the impulse to try and hurt yourself at speed! Lol I really enjoy riding it as often as I can... Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey shawn, always love your Iron videos. Probably because I own a 2012 iron I've had from new and I love it to death! I'm thinking about doing the stage one in the next 2 momths. I keep changing my mind on pipes. I absolutely love the Vance and hines short shots look and also sound with the quiet baffles. A lot of people say you lose performance with drag pipes (lack of back pressure apparently). Others say the quiet baffles help bring that back. Any opinion on that style of pipe?
@austin470810 жыл бұрын
buying an iron later this month. Would you suggest getting the intake and pipes as well? I'm 6'3 210 and live in Mississippi where we have some godawful roads. I'm just curious as to any adjustments you'd suggest. Cheers.
@ShawnSmoak10 жыл бұрын
The intake and exhaust with a stage-1 flash (or fuel module of choice) is a wonderful performance upgrade! If your roads are quite rough, you may want to consider some suspension upgrades... But ride it first, you may find it's just fine. Congratulations on the new Iron! Thanks for watching and commenting Austin!
