Haha, thanks so much. When I recorded this I'd had the chance to calm down a little because we'd been there for hours by that point. When I was flying the drone over the crater for the first time I was the opposite of cool 😅

Andy, spectacular footage and photos! Amazed the drone didn't melt. I was at a safe distance years ago from the active lava flow from Kīlauea on the big island, and the heat was almost unbearable. I can't imagine what the temp above the crater was. Lucky for all of us it made it. And we got the bonus of the LR editing techniques. Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience, and Iceland is still tops on my list to visit some day.

Hi Gerry. Thanks so much for the comment. I was actually a bit worried about the drone...we were 1,5km away from the crater and with the wind blowing away from us it was hard to have any idea of the heat above the crater. Fortunately I was with a friend who has flown his drone above the crater many times, so I had some guidance. You really should visit Iceland, it's an amazing country

"let the wonder of being in a place really sink in" is why I love to hike alone in the Alps for a week every year. Sitting down and wonder about the enormous forces that have lifted these mountains and about how plants and animals survive in the harsh conditions. Thanks for the interesting video.

Thanks so much or the comment Peter. I think people come to photography from different places, and for me it's always been from the joy of being outside in nature - I hike regularly in my home and find myself wondering the same thing about the shape of the rocks and how the force of the ocean dominates the landscape.

Thanks so much. The person I was with has visited the volcano multiple times and flown his drone there, so he was able to guide me (basically to make sure that it was high enough that you could always see each side of the crater, and to not stop moving for more than a few seconds. I had no issues with anything melting

Thanks so much. I actually always have two cameras with me, one with wide angle lens and another with a telephoto, and currently that's the XT4 and XS10. I like the XS10 because it's small and light, and it's excellent with a telephoto lens because it has image stabilisation and a really deep grip, so it's easier to get handheld shots with no shake.

Hi Andy, wondering if we weren't at the volcano the same day. I got the same patterns of flowing lava in my own footage. It was august 21 I think...
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, we were there on the same day. I was there on the 21st...I think we go there around 4h30 in the morning and were there till around midday in the end....it took a long time before the lava started to flow over the edge of the crater

@UCTFdE%F0%9F%98%86ybgY_c3Di0SvcmHgZQ yeah exactly ! Spent the night in my car at the parking lot. Wake up every hour to check live stream :) and finally walked up around 5:30. Used my first drone battery for the 10 minutes sunrise, but the eruption was low. Left later than you, because my 3 batteries were down. As you say mainly a drone spot. I think the eruption was getting better after I left, but couldn't do anything before the batteries were charged. And when they were, it started to 😂rain and fog came in. Pretty difficult to predict when the peak of the eruption occurs, and when to send the drone. Would have need 3 more batteries lol

Thanks once more dir this inspiring report from such a stunning location and the editing process. Contemplating on your comments regarding taking time to let a place or scene to "sink in", I think that this is one of the hardest parts of photography: experience in a place on and emotional level rather than objectifying it. Because it requires the ability to listen to "your inner self", a skill which in my experience is not easily learned or trained. On another topic: are you planning to do a video about your visit to Norway which you talked about in your last video? This would be something I would very much look forward to.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. For me, I came to landscape photography from hiking and loving being outside. That was my love before I even picked up a camera, and for me it's important to always try to find that connection with nature when I'm out. As for Norway, I intended to make videos but I had to cancel the trip a few days before I was supposed to go because my hiking partner broke his ankle. It was a shame, it's a trip we were both really looking forward to, but we'll be in Norway next summer so I'll do it then.

Beautiful as always! One question I had about your drone... With weight of gear being so important on your adventures I'm wondering why you went with the Air 2s over the Mini 2. Do you see a significant jump in image quality for stills?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. When I switched from the Mavic 2 Pro earlier this year I did think about the Mini 2 as it's so light, but there's just too big a trade off in quality. The sensor is small, which reduces it's dynamic range, and 12mp is really not very much when it comes to printing an image. The video quality is a big step down as well with no F log capability, and I also had concerns about it's wind performance, as I fly in a some pretty windy places.
@Dennisoneiljr
@Dennisoneiljr 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyMumford Thanks for the reply! I took your advice and traded the mini 2 for the air 2s and am much happier with the image quality.

Thanks so much. I was worried about the drone, and so far away it's impossible to feel the heat, or even have an idea of height (as I only know height above the take off point, not the crater), but I was with a guy who's done loads of drone flights over there, so was pretty sure it'd be OK. The drone survived 4 flights unscathed

So, you merged an HDR and then made it low dynamic range again? Interesting…
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually relatively high dynamic range, it's just that there are literals only shadows and highlights. The brighter image didn't really have as much highlight information as I wanted, but you're right, I could probably have got the same image from just the darker exposure...it just felt like it had a little more depth in the shadows with the HDR merge, but I don't think that's something you can see on a YT compressed video
