I don’t need a new camera ( I’d like one of course) but I don’t need one. I’m still getting perfectly good results from my X Pro 1 and XT2…..basically the cameras comfortably outperform my talent! However, If I was in the market for a new Fuji camera your channel would be my first ( and only) stop. Simply unparalleled presentation, technical content and style. Top notch work Andy, thank you.

Thanks for the sensible and balanced review. I appreciated how you tackled the "film simulation dial" or the presentation. Most other videos are either "wow, this is great! welcome to a Fuji commercial" or "oh my god, this is stupid nobody wants it". Instead you'd stated why you would prefer something else, but it might make sense for others (without making fun of them/us). Cheers!

I just purchased the Fujifilm XT50 and like all smaller or retro style of cameras that Fujifilm made, like the XT3 &5 along with the Nikon ZF, i purchased Small Rig grips for all of them. The grip is just big enough to make the camera easier to hold and the bottom plate has a grove that allows you to mount it on your tripod, the weight is very negligible and it gives extra protection to the bottom of the camera, i have a similar setup on my smaller Olympus bodies.

This is the review I have been waiting for, your channel was one of the reasons I switched from Nikon to Fujifilm when I bought the XT30 when it was launched, it has been very well used and as you mentioned has stood up to all types of weather, it has taken a few knocks along the way and I had been waiting to upgrade to it's successor, however lately I have been playing with the idea of switching back to Nikon and getting something like the Z6II lots of discounts on them just now. The XT50 looks amazing and the 40 mp would have amazing image quality I'm sure. But for someone looking to take their hobby a little further, I think an XT5 would be a better choice, for not much more money. Thanks for the review Andy, decisions decisions.

Just found your review and I'm pleased I did as the X-T50 is a camera I'm considering to change to from my Olympus OM-1, along with the 3 lenses I have for it ( 8-25mm, 12-100mm, 40-150mm all F4 Pros ) . I prefer more compact bodies and along with the vast jump in megapixels I hope it will be worth the outlay. However I'm also tempted to look at the X-T5 as it might be 'closer' to my OM-1 in many ways .

Another excellent overview. I am interested in buying this camera. I think the ergonomics of the XT5 with its grip is most likely an advantage depending on the lens. I do like using a wrist strap so tge XT50 is a great choice. I personally prefer the PSAM layout and love the XS20 and XH2. I lost my XS10 so I am in need of a replacement. 🎉What I am hoping is that next generation XS with the 5th generation processor and sensor and becomes the baby XH2.

Love your honesty!! I have an X-T5 and X-H2. Not sure I would trade either for the X-T50. It's nice being able to take a lot of photos and not have to worry about the battery. If I needed something smaller & lighter, I would probably go with the X100VI as it includes the lens for only 200USD more. Plus the 40MP sensor really needs the latest Fuji f/1.4 lenses, which make the X-T50 quite nose heavy. The newer Fuji 23mm f/1.4 is pretty much permanently attached to my X-T5.

I sold an X-T30ii before the X-T50 was revealed with the intention to upgrade. However, when they revealed the price and sensor I had reservations. I didn’t notice much difference in sharpness from my old X-T4 when I got the X-H2, though did notice more noise. The X-T50 was also selling for twice the price of a new X-T30ii and only $50 less than the X-T5. I just couldn’t justify it, more so because I also have a full frame Sony system with 61mp. So in the end I re-bought the X-T30ii. 😅

Thanks, Andy. I was looking forward to the next generation of this line. While I love the addition of the new sensor and IBIS, I am very disappointed they didn't upgrade the battery, and that they eliminated the drive dial in favor of the film simulation dial. You mentioned the left dial being ISO on the X-T5, but on the X-T20 and X-T30, it was the drive dial, which for me is extremely useful. The film simulation dial is useless because I shoot in raw.

Fuji appears to be marketing the X-T50 as an 'interchangeable lens X100 VI' which puts off existing X-Tx0 users looking to upgrade. I like my X-T30 and would love IBIS and the newest AF algorithms, but definitely not at that price. The X-S20 seems like a better deal to me - I don't mind PASM and the articulating screen, and the body isn't much bigger either. If you store your camera with a lens attached (like most people do), then the fact that the X-S20 is deeper due to the grip isn't bothering at all.

Hi Andy. If one considers the inflation rate between the release of the X-T30 II and the X-T50 the price differential is not that great. I did calculations a while back the real difference allowing for inflation is, if I recall right, less than € / $ 150. For IBIS and the bigger sensor. Great review and a cracking camera.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, glad you like the review. That’s an interesting way of looking at it, but even putting inflation aside the price puts it much closer to the XT5 price than previous cameras in the line have been. It used to feel like you were getting so much of the XT4 or 3 or whatever for a much reduced price, but now I think the relationship has changed and you’re only paying slightly less than an XT5, which makes the things you don’t get (battery life being prime among those things) much more relevant

@@AndyMumford Andy I'm not sure battery life is such a big issue. On Amazon one can pick up 2 x after market batteries and charger for slightly less than £22. As for the overall price I'm thinking that the IBIS and 40 mp processor eat up most of that. The price of the X-S20 suggests that the processor is the key added value item. I'm thinking that Fuji is steadily creating divisions in their camera range and I'm not sure where they are going at the moment (rangefinder styles?). Bestest of wishes. K

I am back in the market for new gear (having been out of the market for 15 years) and have discovered how the world has advanced and how the world now includes Fuji. Even though this focuses on the X-T50 it touches very nicely on all three of my final contenders and the important differences between this, the X-T5 and X-S20 (I will re-watch the video on that one). Tough question: I believe you own the X-S20. Would you move to this Fuji small body or keep the X-S20? Thanks very much for the great videos !!

Thanks for the comment, glad you like the reviews. The XT5 would always be my first choice, and my second camera is currently the XS10 (I didn’t see a point in upgrading). Thanks for the review, Andy! Enjoyed watching it. It was your review back in the day that convinced me to go with the XT30. What are your thoughts regarding older lenses not resolving the 40 MP sensor on the XT5/XT50? I am disappointed by this Fuji decision. I am no expert, but I thought camera bodies were always meant to be backward compatible with lenses. With this new development, if I want to do a body upgrade to the XT5/XT50 in the future, I'll now also have to consider replacing my lenses (XF55-200 and XF18-55) to get the most of the camera. Doesn't this just incentivize Fuji owners to explore other camera options in the market when they are ready to upgrade?

Thanks for the comment, glad you find the videos useful. I talk about the lenses at 12:04 in the video. All camera systems suffer from the same thing as technology advances and older lenses can’t keep up. Fuji have just been honest about it with their customers. You own the 18-55 and 55-200, lenses which aren’t as sharp as the 16-55 or 50-140. So ask yourself if it didn’t bother you before that those lenses don’t perform as well and get the best out of the 26mp sensor, why does it bother you that they don’t perform as well on the 40mp sensor? As I explained in the video, I use many non-optimized lenses on the X-T5 and am very happy with the performance I get

Hi Andy. For cameras that are not "weather sealed" like the X-T50, how often do you as a heavy pro user find yourself cleaning the sensor. I don't have a good feel for how easy or difficult it is to clean sensors since I have never done it before. I generally don't shoot in pouring rain. I'm more concerned about dust and condensation forming on the sensor when going inside say a restaurant where the relative humidity is high from a very cold environment.

IMO the current price of the XT50 is too expensive and too bloated to be a 2nd tier camera, and Fuji needs to treat its customers right. It seems to be the accountant and marketing got too much involvement in current line ups. Firstly, the price of XT50 is only about 20% less than the XT5, and including the newer kit lens is probably about 15% less! Any sane person like myself will choose the XT5 for its much more refined shutter, buttons and dials; WR; dual card; bigger and more solid body; better flip screen and so on. They should’ve left out the IBIS, kept the weight under 400g and old kit lens, and price it under US$1000 (or around $1200 with the old kit lens) The XM5 is in the right direction though. The other thing about auto focus is, when Sony was the only company with awesome AF, I can live with Fuji’s shortcomings. But when other manufacturers caught up and Fuji hasn’t? That’s a no no. With many things in life, loyalty only goes so far, and if the company doesn’t treat their customers right, they will leave! I don’t want Fuji to go down like the M34 cameras, so stop letting the accountants and marketing get in the way of quality products. And about the sensor shortages? I’m pretty sure it’s a marketing thing, because when no other manufacturer faces this problem in late 2024, Fuji shouldn’t! Common Fuji! You’re better than this!

I agree with the first part, the XT50 is expensive and too close to the XT5, so I'm not sure who it's targeted at. However, I don't believe including the old kit lens is a good idea - Fuji redesigned the kit to work better with the 40mp sensor, I've tested it and it's outstanding....much better than the 18-55 or 16-80 on the 40mp sensor, so it would be perverse to then not sell it with cameras that have that sensor, and probably a better example of them "not treating their customers right" I agree that they could have left IBIS out, but in many ways Fuji have a dilemma with this camera. To keep development costs down Fuji effectively use as few different sensors as possible (yes, I know they are made by Sony, but they're made to Fuji specs and then Fuji have to design their processor to work with the sensors, all of which brings R&D costs which are minimised by using as few different sensors as possible and re-using them in different cameras). So they have the 40mp sensor (expensive), the 26mp sensor (cheaper) and the 26 backlit sensor of the XH2 (very expensive). If they use the 26mp sensor again, then it's really just going to be the same as the XT30. If they put IBIS in with that sensor...maybe that could work...it would be similar to the XS20, but still an upgrade on the XT30. It's clear now though that they knew they had the X-M5 launching though, so I guess they went with the 40mp sensor to separate it from that camera. As for autofocus, I'm not sure I agree with you there, and my feeling is there's a lot of myth and confirmation bias around it. I'm out travelling and shooting for around 4 or 5 months each year, usually leading workshops where people have all the latest Sony, Canon and Nikon, and I've never yet been in a real-life situation where the Fuji hasn't performed as well as those. This year I've shot lots of wildlife, as well as street, and the XT5 and GFX 100 II worked just as well as the Sonys and Canons. Sure, it did miss shots, but so did they. And some of these were complex shots where the camera had a spit second to nail focus images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5852ece3e6f2e1ac624051fb/e2e545a9-9a1d-45de-818c-db1de464c8dc/Polar+Bear+Hole+1.jpg?format=2500w (one of the Sonys actually missed this shot). I've stood side by side in very low light where the contrast detect on a Nikon hasn't been able to find an edge in order to focus, but the XT5 could. I also shoot a lot of video for the channel, and haven't encountered focus issues since the XT4 So I'm not saying that Fuji's focus is perfect - I don't shoot sport for example (but who buys a Fuji to shoot sport?), or spend time photographing a dog running towards me, but in real world landscape, wildlife and street I've seen no significant difference in the Fuji's ability to focus on subjects as well as other camera brands. For sure it sometimes fails, and when it does I suspect people use that as an example to say how bad the AF is, but I've seen other brands fail as well, but because they don't have Fuji's reputation, people seem to see those failures as exceptions to the rule or user error or whatever

@@AndyMumford Wow, Andy, I didn’t expect such as comprehensive response, now I feel obliged to sit down and reply to you 🤣 Much appreciated. Kidding aside, I believe the XM5 does ship with the 15-45mm lens as a kit? At “current price points” I believe this is a better package. However I have to emphasise “current” price points, because the 16-50 kit is selling at ridiculous prices. I was waiting and shopped for the XT50 earlier this week and was surprised that with the kit 16-50, is only US$50 less than the same kit with the XT5, so which one did you think I purchased? The body only XT50 is only US$250 more than the XT5 as well. That’s why I say current prices because there’s a little premium on the XT50, where as there’s some minor discount on the XT5 with the same kit. So at current prices, XM5 with 16-50 doesn’t make any sense, but when the prices normalises that would be another story. Second paragraph totally agree, it was probably a difficult decision with IBIS for XT50, and I think the XM5 is in the right direction, and who knows, the XT30ii was pretty successful as a photography camera, and maybe they should shoehorn the 40mp in the XT30 making it XT30iii? That could work without much R&D? 🤣🤣 This way they can keep the weight and price down. As for the autofocus, I think I have to share my journey with Fujifilm with you. My wife gave me an X10 as a birthday present, and back then I didn’t know about cameras, but I loved the results. So the next logical thing was the get the X100T when my first child was born, and I fell in love with the colours and the ergonomics. Thoughout the years I have purchased the X100F, X100V, XT20, XT4, XT30ii. And for a casual shooter I was and still am a pretty big fan of Fuji. But in between those years I’ve owned a Sony RX100vi and tried a few of my friends A7 cameras. I think it was when I compared the XT20 autofocus with the Sonys, and it’s night and day. This idea stuck with me and everytime fuji releases a camera and I envied the autofocus of the Sonys. Few years back I was ok with Fuji since all other manufacturers mirrorless gave less than stellar AF performances, so I thought it’s just a matter of Sony doing a great job. But it’s the end of 2024 and I think that’s enough time for anyone to catch up. That being said I have only owned the XT5 for a few days and have yet to test it out, but I have managed my expectations and am sure I will still enjoy the camera. To me, using a Fuji is like changing through the gears of a manual transmission. It’s painful sometimes but also an enjoyment. But in 2024 we should have the cake and eat it too. 🤣 BTW I’m from Hong Kong, and if you ever visit, I’d be happy to buy you lunch or drinks. Take care!

Hello, great video. I’m looking to buy my first camera for filmmaking. I have used cameras before but never owned one. I really like fujifjlm for their film library presets as this could come handy in colour grading out of box. I really like the X-th50 because of the sensor being so large (assuming this would be amazing for low light which I would love to shoot in). I like the X-th30 as well but for the price it doesn’t seem worth it to me. I’ve been watching lots of reviews of different cameras as well like the Sony a6400 (closer to my price range) but no video really states the best camera on a lower budget for film making specifically. For me the size aspect of the camera doesn’t matter and I am willing to spend money if it means ‘I won’t outgrow the camera’ but I’m looking for help in finding those cameras right for me - a filmmaking focus not a photography one. Thanks

Thanks for the comment. I’m probably not the person to advise you on cameras for film making as it’s not my area, and as I shoot Fuji I can’t really compare it to other cameras that I haven’t used. However, you mentioned the X-T50 having a larger sensor which is good for low light. The XT50 is an APS-C sensor, the same as all the other Fuji cameras, as well as the Sony A6400. It has more megapixels, but that doesn’t mean better low light performance, and often its actually not quite as good as lower resolution cameras (fewer megapixels on a sensor of the same size means the photo diodes are often bigger at gathering light)

I was really considering to buy this. Stopped photography years ago for lack of time and motivation. Kept to using my phone for photos for close to 10 years now. I recently got to try a Leica D-Lux 8 and got hooked again. Now I look for a simple to use EDC point and shoot for me and my wife. The D-Lux being overpriced for what it is, I looked for better alternatives in the same price range and discovered the X-T50. On paper just what I look for in every aspect. However, when I went to a store to try it out I was so disappointed by the flimsy, cheap feel this camera has to it. Fair, I may be spoiled from the haptics of the Leica, but at this price point I really expected the Fuji to feel much more exquisite. Instead it feels "plasticy", flimsy, fragile and simply not much fun to pick up or use. I still won't buy the Leica, but now I'm stuck looking for the next best alternative.

The Leica D-Lux 8 is a lovely camera, but it's effectively 8 year old image technology in a beautifully made body. The XT50 is pretty much the opposite. It's got the same image making capacity and autofocus as Fuji's flagship X Series camera, the X-H2, which costs $2000. So of course there are going to be compromises to keep the cost down, and that's come at the expense of the build quality. It's not really reasonable to expect a camera at this price point to have both the sensor, processor and autofocus that this has, and the same build quality as the Leica. You'd probably be better off looking for something like a second hand X-Pro 3 or even an older X100 model, which will still give you better image quality and autofocus than the D-Lux 8 (and I say this as someone who owns the Lecia, which as I say, is a lovely camera). Or get the Lumix DC-LX100 II...it's exactly the same as the Leica, it just doesn't have Leica branding.

Thanks, Andy, solid review and it's always a treat to see your pictures. If I were starting out and could afford both, I'd be in a pickle, trying to choose between this and the X-T5, given the price difference. As it happens, I started with the X-T30 and so realized the smaller body is comfortable for my hands - granted, less so with a huge lens on it - so I would lean towards the X-T50. One question I have for you - about the larger sensor. I've heard some KZbin photo people say that the 26MP sensor has its advantages - quicker write time, smaller file size. Do you think there would have been as positive a reaction if Fuji had released this with the smaller sensor? Would that have prevented the camera from having the gains in autofocus or the ability to use certain film simulations, for example? Anyway just an idle question. Thanks again for the review.

Thanks for the comment, glad you find the reviews useful. Fuji could certainly have implemented all those features on the 26mp sensor, they did so on the XS20. I guess they feel they needed to create a bigger differentiation between the different cameras

Perhaps if I'd compared it to other cameras, I'd have found things that were less impressive than it's competitors, but I don't have access to those cameras, so my review is based on using the camera and comparing it to other options in the Fuji lines. The cons are as I stated in the video (multiple times); that its no longer really differentiated by price from the X-T5, so it's not really clear who its made for and why you wouldn't spend a few hundred more to buy an X-T5, which is a better camera.
