I love yew, it is the most beautiful wood with all its glorious textures and irregular growth. I know that it is exceptionally hard - is it physically arduous to turn? I think this my favourite piece for some time, just letting the natural texture shine in a simple shape.

Thanks .. no I find it really good to turn and always surprises me
@charlesheiser806722 сағат бұрын
Andy...your work is spectacular. You make it look like everytime you turn something it comes out perfect. Would you consider showing some of your work that failed. Either it just came out wrong or the wood broke or something. Those would be interesting to see.

I noticed you were turning against the grain for most of the hollowing. I thought you’d reverse direction of your cuts after you finished the top edge. What was your thinking here? I don’t do much end grain turning and I’d like to try a big bowl like this. Anything you can tell me about it would be helpful. Thanks.
@AndyPhillipWoodturning2 сағат бұрын
I didn't really think about it but the idea is to cut from left to right as flat as you can, don't scoop it in like a normal bowl. When I got to the stage where I was struggling to do that, I changed to a heavy duty carbide and came from right to left again as flat as I could .. just don't dig into the end grain work across it ( hope that helps ) maybe have a practice on something small until you get a feel for it..

Isn't it dangerous to turn yew, given even the shavings can poison you?
@AndyPhillipWoodturningКүн бұрын
Not unless you like to eat it.. Its mainly the seeds in the berries or the leaves, I've turned 100s of pieces using the same protection that I use for any turning and have never had problem..
@mandyray23Күн бұрын
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning Same here. Well maybe just dozens! It’s beautiful to turn. Use the same PPE for everything. No problems.
@VictorAgababovКүн бұрын
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning arils are actually edible and quite sweet (as long as you make sure to remove the seed). But I guess, if you're working in a mask and don't inhale the shavings, should be fine.
