The only time I saw Anekdoten. At the end of the concert. They asked : Any requests. Someone shouted Sad Rain and there they went. What an encore, what a number. The Mellotron barrage is truly unique and what makes (any song) them so good. This song is no exception.

The decay of the mellotron timing out at the end is art in itself. Wonderful beautiful piece. The bass artist is magnificent.

Next year makes 25 years of following ANEKDOTEN. A lot of critical thinkers have suggested that later developing Prog bands after the classic prog era can't match what came before. For me ANEKDOTEN is a band that equals that super quality music I am always looking for!
@theprogmaster33072 жыл бұрын
Can’t be doing with the “classic” tag, progressive rock is progressive regardless of year it was created. These guys are good, with the mellow Ron especially could be back in the 70s

I have to admit: I had my doubts about Marty... But needless to say, he adds some presence and layer to Anekdoten's music. Glad he's there :)

The neon dawn has just begun The day is here that wasn't meant to come She's walking by the frozen sea Trying to count the stars that she can't see A distant sound of black rain in the water The pale moon shining soft through a cloud The sun is turning black in the horizon The wind is slowly tearing her apart And so our time has come, my friend The child who cries and no-one seems to care The echoes of the birds are gone The sky is painted grey, but it's so warm Searching for a light in the darkness Trying to keep your eyes from the dirt Taste the bitter wine of tomorrow I'm walking on a path that never ends

Despite of all the so obvious sources of inspiration, this Anekdoten guys, Porcupine Tree and the last 3, proper old style prog-rock Opeth albums, are the only ones that sound compelling and credible to me. I love 70's prog rock and modern progressive death/black/doom metal (Obscura, Beyond Creation, Rivers of Nihil, Enslaved, etc) but I find most modern prog-rock bands like Periphery, Tesseract, Between the Buried and Me, Haken, Riverside, Leprous etc terribly dull. They sing and play great, but something's missing.
@zedumar6 жыл бұрын
Agree... except for Riverside (Anno Domini album is great stuff)
@petecanthropus99476 жыл бұрын
@@zedumar Since you seem to be on the same wavelength than me, I will listen to that again, and maybe I change my current opinion. When it comes to music our tastes and assessments may vary depending on the mood we're in, the moment of our lives, etc.

Have you listened to My Brother The Wind? They are some kind of spin off band to Anekdoten with some band members in common. Definitely not as polished as Anekdoten and doesn't have as much material to listen to but worth a few listens at least. There's also Dream Theater which really does it for me. Not as proggy, more on the metal side, but they have some masterpieces. One band/album which remains mysterious to me named "Heart of Sun" also gets my recommendation, It's like nothing I've ever heard. And also for some more chill but masterfully composed prog(ish) there's The Dear Hunter, and The Reign of Kindo and Razia's shadow by Forgive Durden. I know thats a lot of music to have presented to you but I emplore you to make a note of any you haven't previously listened to and try to give them each a listen some time. There's also a website called Every Noise at Once which links together bands and genres spectacularly, the search function is great too.

I love Willson-Piper and The Church, but I still don't think he fits very well on Anekdoten, he continually seems to try to emphasize his guitar, putting in unnecessary arrangements.

Good song, great Mellotron ( albeit digital) but weak vocals let them down
