It's the tough part. Most of my friends who are in the medical field opted for "easier" paths. Not to say ANY job or education in the medical field is easy. But most of my friends decided to forgo becoming a doctor and went towards nursing degrees instead, or midwifery, etc. Still gives them some financial freedom, they can pay off their loans in 1-2 years if they double-down on their shifts and sacrifice A TON those initial years of working, and then they are able to move forward with their lives faster (buying a house, getting married, having kids). Whereas my physician friends are all still in the same boat you are. That said, you're playing the long game. If you play your cards right and have a good head on your shoulders, you will most definitely win the financial freedom game, big time. It's hard to go nearly a decade or more in this boat of debt and low income, but once you are done, you can really go far. Keep at it!!!!

Physicians are not known for being financially savvy, any more than they are known for being good aircraft pilots. Their comments on financial things are usually a bit panicked and off base. Most people in their twenties (in all lucrative professions) do not make good money with two significant exceptions: software and sex work. In business and law, the big money arrives in 40s-50s after a long, relatively lower paid apprenticeship after graduate school. This can last over 10 years. Medicine, overall, pays better than any other available jobs. There is a myth that other jobs easily pay 200-400k... other than big 4 software, that is a myth. Particularly in rural areas or 2-3 tier cities. Doctors often act like their work is a financial sacrifice. Sometimes true; usually untrue, and poorly researched.

@@777jones not to mention to work in the Big 4 companies you'll likely have to move to an area with high cost of living such as the Bay Area. So while they earn a lot, the cost of living is a big chunk of that income. They'll still be able to save a lot in the end tho.

I used to do physiology research and one of the things we measured was inhalation/exhalation of volume/composition etc and tied it with a whole bunch of other measurements. But we rarely controlled it, as it was an outcome measure. I was at an OR for a vascular case and was chatting it up with the anesthesiologist about how perfect the tidal volume curves looked and I asked why it looks so textbook. He was like "Oh you mean this?" as he slightly changed the tidal volume. I quickly realized that they have full control of the respiratory function. Which...obviously makes sense but never quite realized.

@DisabledVet317
@DisabledVet317 4 жыл бұрын
@@meganamos8543 Mathematically you are correct but practically I would disagree. If that $80,000 has an interest rate of 4% then she would guarantee herself a profit of $3,200 in saved interest this year alone and get to claim the large payment of her student loans on her taxes. Now, if she invested that $80,000 and had a really good year and she made 10% on that money , she would gain $8,000. This $8,000 would be taxed at 20% ($1,600) due to her incredibly high income. So, to me, if I had a net worth of over $6 million and had an income of over $1 million a year, keeping the student loans around for a chance (remember she could easily lose money if she invested in something that went down in value) to profit an additional $3,200, is borderline insanity. That's just how my mind looks at it.

bihbhkjbnlk look I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with your statements. But I feel like you really missed the tone of my original comment. Paying off loans, investing, none of it matters if she’s unhealthy. In general I feel like if something is “in the budget” spend the money and don’t fuss about what other people think. But even she notes the behavior/purchase was unhealthy and extreme as she’s a vegetarian now sleeping under dead rodent. So yep, that money would have been better spent on therapy. Cause her overall mental health is worth more than anything she has in the bank and all she’s done is spend a boatload of money on something that clearly doesn’t sit 100% right with her.

I believe... if you work in a hospital, there are some limits, but honestly those limits are shitty. You'd have to be working a super duper crazy number of hours before someone says, okay, go home, go sleep. It's a terribly stressful work environment and I hope someday someone can figure out a way to make it all work without doctors and nurses having to work around the clock on really long shifts that seem neverending. It's not good for the patient or the medical staff. Nobody likes being sleep-deprived.

Not to mention, I’m his field, at least, they have been outsourcing and making the MD’s become independent contractors, so not only are they not paid what the nurses and patients think they are paid, but now they aren’t offered health benefits, or any employer based benefits, which pulls even more out of their salary.

I've had quite a few surgeries and when one anesthesiologist found out that I was a CNA, he actually treated me like a medical professional. Then, before leaving my room, HE thanked ME for what I do. I was so touched (and to be honest, shocked) that a physician of his caliber talked to me like an equal, he didn't 'dumb it down' for me. I may have only gone to school for a year, for my position in the medical field, but I get so angry when CNA's get treated like we're stupid. It happens all the time, unfortunately. I get the sense that you would be just like that anesthesiologist that I had. It is so strange to me, that the physicians are usually much kinder to us CNAs than alot of RNs & LPNs. (Although, at my current job in a rural hospital, ALL of the staff work like a team. Nobody is better than anyone. From housekeeping & dietary, nursing and physcians. We are family, as my personal GP (and coworker lol), says!) I will be a member of staff at our hospital for the next 30 years, I expect. Unless I retire early when the kids are all grown and leave the farm. :)

Oahu is around 400,000, but not sure if it’s inflated - Doctors of every specialty are HIGHLY needed on the islands so it may be accurate even though the location is desirable for whatever reason there is a shortage. Whatever the pay is, it is well earned because until you are laying on that table, the value of an anesthesiologist and the surgical team is worth more than gold for sure! Much love to you and anyone who sacrifices time to help others! ❤️

As a person who has lived on one of outer islands, doctors who come to Hawaii have the wrong perception of "location." They think of it as sunshine, clear blue water, palm trees etc. However, they get a rude awakening to how isolating it can be, not many good schools for their kids, not many places to shop, not many things to do. I knew multitudes of doctors that come and go. A large part of it is the above mentioned reasons. Its also worth mentioning the cost of living is nuts. They are paid the same as mainland doctors which is adds to them not staying there. The need is dire on the islands and the best way to recruit docs is to get those who were born on the islands, they have the highest chance of practicing on the islands.

@@anti-gravityseal7162 No way. UG is 5.05% and Grad (med school also) is 6.6%. This is direct unsubsidized loans. Medical school student borrow absurd amount of money in comparison to UG (no other grad program comes close except law school). These loans alone don't cut it. You need to borrow grad plus on top of these loans which has an interest rate of > 7%. That absurdly low interest rate is most likely due to loan consolidation with a private lender. Elizabeth Adilee Wyman this actually isn’t true at all. Even if you can’t afford it (most can’t), you can borrow everything on loans, which is why so many physicians have crazy loan burdens. However, the salary is high enough to be able to pay them off eventually, even if it sucks. There’s a shortage purely because medical school spots are extremely limited, and so are residencies. People are killing themselves to get into schools, taking years off after college just to boost their applications. If medical school and residency spots increased, you’d have as many as needed.

@@CloroxBleach-nu8vo I'm not a medical professional but I went to school with plenty of aspiring doctors (this was 10+ years ago). There's no specific education requirement to go to medical school other than to have a 4 year bachelor's degree. Some undergrad schools don't even offer a specific pre-med program (mine didn't). But most people I knew took biology, chemistry and other health or life sciences majors for their undergraduate education. From Study.com (specifically about Anesthesiologists): "There is no official degree required for admission to medical school, and many baccalaureate programs can adequately prepare students for this endeavor. Some schools prefer graduates with a 4-year degree in natural sciences, which should include classes in physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, anatomy, and biology." From the Occupational Outlook Handbook (about Physicians and Surgeons in general): "Most applicants to medical school have at least a bachelor's degree, and many have advanced degrees. Although no specific major is required, students usually complete undergraduate work in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and English. Students also may take courses in the humanities and social sciences. In addition, some students volunteer at local hospitals or clinics to gain experience in a healthcare setting." Most universities can guide you to the types of majors that are best suited for medical school, if they don't have a pre-med program. You can also look for anesthesiologists on LinkedIn and see what their undergrad degrees were (if they have it listed)! Good luck! study.com/articles/Anesthesiologist_Education_Requirements_and_Career_Information.html www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physicians-and-surgeons.htm#tab-4 The Study.com URL I provided above gives a great overview of what your education and training will look like so you can get a better idea on how you can prepare yourself for this career, and what you'll need to do in the coming years.

Anesthesiologist here: I have never known a Physician who made $1M or more a year. They certainly do not make that taking care of Medicare or Medicaid patients. I can imagine, say, a Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon who deals only in cash patients possibly making that much, but your average PS scrapes by. At the low end, Family Practice and Pediatrics make in the $250K range. At the upper end, I guess some Neurosurgeons make >$600k but they are at the upper end of the bell shaped curve. Anesthesiologists make an average of $360K with a very tight standard deviation. Add $75K if you do hearts. If you are a total masochist you can make another $75K taking call from your colleagues who don't want to. You will see newspaper articles about Doctors billing Medicare for >$1M. The general public thinks that Doctor makes >$1M but he has huge overhead and will be lucky to take home $350K. I have heard it said that a Union Plumber makes more than a general practice Doctor, over their lifetime, but it is easier to get into Medical School than a Plumbing Apprenticeship. You need to have a father who is a plumber to do that.

I really loved her comment about going to college. As someone who is really struggling to afford to keep going with no help, I remind myself everyday eventually I will have job security and will have financial stability if I just keep pushing. Thanks for this video. ❤️ It’s super informative all around.

First time watcher and I instantly subscribed! This was a really nice video to watch as I'm currently in Undergrad, working through my Pre-Med Pre-recs, and wanting to catch a glimpse of what the lifestyle of an anesthesiologist is like. It double helped that you said you were from Houston !!!

It is not an every mom thing to choose toys that build up their children's brains. I prefer to have non-electronic toys that they need to use their brain to play and be creative. I figure my kids get enough time on their Chromebooks at school so we only allow at most 1 hour of electronic time at home, during the weekend we allow more but not during the week. I also like my kids to have time to be kids and not be over scheduled with activies!

The reason why shes such a wealthy doctor is because shes a TV doctor (as in a doctor who appears on TV, not a character from a show) I can't remember her name at all but I found her Instagram page a few months ago and shes like a low-key celeb doctor hence the immense wealth.

I will say, it’s definitely not an “every mom thing” I know many moms that use a tablet and phone as their only source of entertainment to get their kids out of their way 🤦🏽‍♀️

Yeah but that is a bad mom thing. The good moms don't let technology be the parent, they actually parent the child. There's a crisis right now with lack of good parenting.

Kristina, I'm up for adoption or if u need a 2nd nanny ;) Seriously, You deserve every penny u make. My late uncle was an anesthesiologist and told me that's the one person on the team to be bringing their A game. I'm sure u know his reasons. I've only had one experience and it was bad so now I'm leary of doctors but watching you over the months has helped me so much. I do wonder if your chin would hit the floor if u heard it though. Keep up the great work because I have so much respect for you since I'v been the one with someone up above my head.

I actually had a military scholarship so I owed time rather than money! When I finished my 4 year residency i was paying back time and while I may not have made as much as an attending as my friends who were not in the military; I was not using my earnings for loan repayments. So there are many ways to do it. Money or time... I chose time and now I’m retired and able to do a second job earning well!

Hi Kristina! I’ve heard Anesthesiologists have the highest cost of malpractice insurance of any specialty , second only to Obstetricians. Also, regarding salary, I know there’s differences in physicians salaries if they work for a hospital, university or private practice. Would be great to hear your comments on these things too. Enjoying your content!
