You can be team Angel or team Spike, that is normal and understandable. But once you know Sarah got that invested in the relationship with David/Angel, you can't help but feeling these scenes a little harder. This specific episode has always been a soft spot for me. Glad you finally watched it. This is one of my favorite episodes and is also widely regarded as one of the best Angel episodes. Fun little fact David Boreanez who plays Angel actually broke character during Buffy an Angel's emotional episode before time was reversed. If you listen closely when Angel is trying to console Buffy you can actually hear him say Sarah. One of the things that makes Buffy and Angel so good together is the working relationship of SMG and David Boreanez. SMG's said multiple times that her working relationship with David has been the best of her career and during an acceptance speech for a Award she even called him her Angel.

A nice subtle parallel between Buffy being depowered, and Angel being depowered. Interesting though that Buffy was able to succeed as a Slayer even without her powers, while Angel couldn't handle it without powers.

That is because they have the perception that the "Bad Boy" love somehow is the adult-love, no, Angel is the Adult love, because a responsible person walks away from a relationship if they know the relationship hurts the one they love, due to a toxicity that is attached to it, in the sense of this magical world built over the sub-text that toxicity is Angelus but in real life, it's like a great guy with a split personality or a personality disorder, and he know that this mental illness is toxic and unhealthy, it would be the responsible choice to walk away as a responsible adult would, knowing that it can seriously harm the person you love, that is genuine love. A Teenager would say: screw that and Angel didn't, he valued the world and buffy above his own which makes him a Noble Warrior of the old code, selflessness above selfishness, the type of people who would give their life for everything they hold dear to them and in return be accepted into Valhalla, which are measured by bravery and there is no bigger bravery than willingly facing death.

It’s a sad revelation to see that they were doomed from the start. Angel would lose his soul during a moment of perfect happiness, he left because he wanted her to have a normal relationship and when he was human and could give her those things but it still couldn’t work because she’s the slayer and he was a liability. It breaks my heart.
@mattdillon86044 жыл бұрын
The only scenarios where they could even remotely be happy in love would be if they were both 100% human, meaning Buffy was not the Slayer and Angel was not a vampire (basically powerless and no monsters after them). Or, if they were both vampires with souls except Angel isn't cursed with his soul. But we all know, Buffy and Angel would never resort to such lives/chances.

(that I remember reading) played an important role in the creation of the comics. I believe it said he helped with stuff and all. But again, yes, the timeline alterations that you factor in would definitely allow them to be together. But, the curse basically *cockblocks* (yes, I used that term) them from ever truly making love. The whole happiness clause, and Angel could still give Buffy that happiness in bed but she wouldn't be happy if he couldn't be also. I 100% believe that Buffy would never be truly happy with Angel because he's not allowed to experience the bliss of love and romance, lest they want Angelus back.

Some nerd points on vampire vs. human physiology and emotional bonds in the Buffyverse: -Vampires can consume food and beverages, but barely taste them and get no physical benefit, except for alcohol, which they need to drink in copious amounts to even stay buzzed, because they rapidly recover from intoxication. Spike mixed Wheaties into his blood for texture, not flavor or nutritional value. -Vampires can love-but as Drusilla said, not always wisely. Spike truly loves Buffy, and it’s like there is some fragment of his human soul remaining, or else his demon soul has evolved beyond pure destructive evil (see: every time he almost involuntarily helped Buffy, even though it’s bad for evil in general)

No, because having his powers gone would lead the world into different and a darker path, as a human he would be powerless to do anything about it, buffy would die and the rest of the world would die. Knowing he was a Key difference placed a large burden on his shoulders. Would you sacrifice the one you love and the world for a couple of years of happiness, that is not a hero and that isn't love. Also Buffy is cursed tooz so even if Angel walked away from his curse, her curse would curse them both, this is why she feels she gonna be alone forever. Spike didn't realize this because he is more in love in the chase then her, if you truly understand him as a character you will understand what I mean, he is a dopamine junkie. but Angel in this episode realized it. Him remaining cursed was his only way to keep her alive which are the best outcome out of the two paths.
