For me this episode accomplished two things - one, it was a tribute to the die hard Bangel shippers like us of what could have been, and more importantly, two, why the two had their own paths and destinies. Heart wrenching, beautifully acted, expertly directed. SMG was so heart broken with the story line that she was actually crying during the "there's not enough time" shoot, and DB said "Sarah, please" trying to comfort her. Joss was so pleased with the raw emotions captured that he didnt even reshoot in spite of the obvious snafu.

I feel like this is a fitting send-off for the Buffy and Angel relationship and it really showcases Angel figuring out his path and how his love for Buffy leads him to a deeper commitment to his purpose. I've never been big on the Bangel ship, but I appreciate the value each of them had to each other and how they both grew from their interactions with each other. The "Powers That Be" were briefly mentioned by Doyle in his introduction. It's basically just the show's non-specific way of talking about "God" or whatever benevolent forces work against the evil demons. The Oracles are a channel by which the Powers can communicate with those on this plane of existence. This episode is the first time that the Oracles have been mentioned, so you're not forgetting anything about them.

For Angel, it's worth remembering that: Angel sees himself as older, wiser, and more experienced than Buffy. That isn't necessarily wrong, especially early in their relationship - she is a teenager, by definition she's inexperienced - but it does lead him to take decisions out of her hands because he doesn't think she's mature enough to make them, because Angel can be condescending like that. The other side to that is the fact that Angel has literally zero experience of healthy relationships. His longest-lasting relationships were with other vampires when he was Angelus, and his relationship with Buffy is the only positive one he's ever had... and it has resulted in disaster for them both. He doesn't know how to have a healthy relationship.
@TheNoybusiness3 жыл бұрын
And Angel is hundreds of years old, but also stuck at 26. .
@Logan_Baron3 жыл бұрын
I'm always kind of torn on the subject. People bring it up on the Angel breaking up and leaving for Buffy's good, and making the decision all on his own. Angel does make the right choice that I don't think Buffy would be able to. "Well doesn't Buffy have any say?" Well yes she should......... But then also no. The decision is the right one (like Angel seeing indicated by his wedding dream that staying would essentially kill her soul) and she would likely not be able to make the right choice. So he made the right choices. He was wrong not to consult her. But she's not going to make the right choice, so is it. So I'm basically "well yes, but really no, except yes, but still no, however yes, but no....."
@imthewonderband3 жыл бұрын
@@Logan_Baron Then there's also the fact that it take 2 people to be in a relationship. Of course, part of Angel's motivation for leaving Buffy was for her own good, as they say, but he's also aware of the curse. Being with Buffy but trying not to get too close or else he'll completely lose himself? That's gotta suck. If he wants the relationship to end, it's over. Buffy can't force him to change his mind.
@kczleon7353 жыл бұрын
I kinda disagree with you here. I never saw angel as more mature and i dont think that he sees himself that way either. As a human (Liam) he didnt mature, didnt form a character even. Thats why angelus is so strong inside him. Thats when he first created a personality (or the demon inside him created one). When he received his soul he didn't go by liam, his former name, he created angel. He didnt know who angel was but he wasnt about to find out until buffy season 1. This was the first time he was treated and seen as a person. This is why angel is such a weird character. He's hundreds of years old but he's also just forming a personality. And i think he broke up with buffy not to take the decision from her but because he thinks he has to suffer to do good. Which is a repeating element of the series

I think it felt a bit off because it ignored the amount of time they had been apart. Angel was very in character because its obvious that he never moved on however Buffy has been. She’s been getting to know Riley and just living life as a college girl and Angel hasn’t been brought up in ages. But one talk with Angel and she’s tempted to get back with him (before he turns human). The sewer scene played out like they had only just broken up and weren’t entirely sure if it was the right decision. However everything that happens after he becomes human I think is totally in character because the reasons they broke up have been removed.

It's the whole point of this episode. Buffy moved on but from what? Not a break up. She moved on from a relationship so perfect yet so harmful and doomed. This episode was like a perfect dream for her, but ut wasnt real and the second you wake up you forget you ever dreamt it.

@@alleybox I think that was probably the point... like on the surface we've seen Buffy moving on but in her heart she's always holding on to Angel... he's her first and greatest love. It's only been about five months since Angel left. And Buffy is/was hugely epically (not a word 😅) in love with him. Personally, I find it very believable that given the opportunity to be together without it hurting others, Buffy falls into it with joy. You don't just get over someone you love really deeply quickly. As much as you might want to. Buffy actually tried to by sleeping with Parker. And in a cut line she says she realised that's what she was trying to do. That while it was happening she was telling herself, "Look at me being so over Angel". I think it's a shame they cut that line. It would perhaps make this episode seem less out of the blue for Alley. Speaking personally, I can sadly very much relate to it taking a long long painfully long time to get over somebody.

Back in the day Buffy was on at 8 pm and immediately Angel was on at 9pm on Tuesday. It wasn't like today where you can just stream your show anytime you wanted, back then if you missed an episode and didn't record it, then you had to wait until rerun season (usually summertime before it picked up again in the fall) and so we were so invested. The network also hyped it without giving much of the plot away. Yes, were were over the whole Buffy/Angel drama by then, but Angel was a new show and I guess the producers felt that they needed the crossovers to not only give the fans what they were missing but also to help bump up viewership and ratings. It's like when Spiderman randomly appears in another character's comic book, the hope is that Spidey will make the other book seem as interesting, if that makes any sense.

I think a lot of people forget about Joyce in that situation with Buffy. Angel wasn't going to leave, even after the mayor got under his skin, until after Joyce came and basically said it was his responsibility to make that decision for Buffy because they both knew she'd never make it on her own. It's so interesting how all the responsibility is put onto Angel- a being who has literally never known true happiness and love- for everything that goes wrong and everything that he should have known better about, but the second he tries to take responsibility and do the right thing he's "making decisions for her". Personally I feel that, all the supernatural mumbo jumbo aside, they could find a way to make it work. However, if you're going to hold him responsible for getting into the relationship with her in the first place, when she was a minor, then it follows that it should also be his duty to break it off when it's clear it's not best for her or for the rest of the world. It doesn't matter though, because this episode of Angel basically canonizes that Angel is necessary as a separate "agent of good" from Buffy- if they're together their ability to counter the forces of evil are lessened and the world suffers, so they have to personally suffer instead and attempt to build a life away from each other.

I think this works well as an Angel episode, particularly to help define his character journey and what he's sacrificing, but does not work or would not work as a Buffy episode at this point in time with where she is. Their relationship/breakup can still be seen as kind of fresh from the Angel or Angelverse, or Angel viewer perspective. But not from the Buffy perspective. If you don't watch Buffy or ignore the most recent season of Buffy or JUST imagine the entire thing from Angel's perspective as he has not started to move on........ It's an important character point for this show and an important show defining episode, but doesn't fit with BTVS.

See, I always feel a need to push back a bit on the whole idea that the decisions Angel makes in this episode and in The Prom where him making decisions "for both of them": At the end of the day, in both cases, it was him exercising his own autonomy, not taking away her's. When he broke up with her, and his response to her saying she wanted her life to be with him was "I don't", I don't read that as him having just been saying something cruel to push her away. Not that there was ever any doubt that he desperately wanted to be with her - that much was literally proven, that being with her was his truest happiness - but he also knew that the nature of their circumstances meant staying together wasn't healthy for either of them. And I like to think that, even by that point, he was also coming to realize that as much as he longed to be with Buffy, what he actually needed for the sake of his own soul was to put in the hard work toward redemption; something he wouldn't be able to do if he had Buffy there to take comfort in. So yes, he was thinking about the ways in which he would hold her back, but even if she truly would have been happy to accept all of that, he still had his own reasons for needing to break it off as well. In the case of I Will Remember You, it's even *more* clear to me that his decision was rooted in what he needed to be right with himself, regardless of any input Buffy may or may not have provided. And given that it was his life and existence in the balance, I firmly stand by is right to make that decision on his own. If the decision had been *solely* dependent on whether or not Buffy saw him as a liability if he stayed human, then that would require her input, but that just wasn't the case. Especially by this point, he had a clear journey of redemption that he was on to someday be able to right with himself, and there was no way around the fact that staying human meant giving up his greatest assets in continuing that journey. Yes, of course there were always plenty of non-superpowered humans who helped fight evil in many ways, but there's just no way he would have been able to maintain the same level of helping people without the vampire superstrength and invulnerability. The way I see it is: If the roles had been reversed, and somehow Buffy had lost her slayer powers in a way that allowed them to be together, would ANYONE be faulting her for taking them back at the expense of their relationship? Would anyone be expecting her to consult Angel about it, when it was her powers on the line, or saying she had "taken away Angel's autonomy" for making that decision on her own? I absolutely do not think they would. I adore Buffy too and sympathize with her so much, but especially when it comes to her and Angel, I think there's a real tendency for fans to sometimes expect Angel to give up HIS autonomy just so she never has to be sad or go through hard things, and I really dislike the framing of that as "what would be equal", when it would be anything but. If anything about Angel was problematic it would be his stalking tendencies, but I genuinely don't think any of the actual decisions he made were in any way out of line, because they were as much or more about his own needs as they were about what he thought was best for Buffy.

Suggestion: consider getting in the habit of avoiding seeing the guest star names that appear after the credits. There are some pretty big surprises that won’t be surprises at all if you see the names.

most of the time i dont notice/recognize the names of guest stars haha. i only ever look for writer/directors bc i know those names usually
@SolidSnake82953 жыл бұрын
That might work the vast majority of the time, but unless you go out of your way to avoid them seeing a name like “SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR” appear on your screen is kinda hard not to notice. 😉

I think that after season 3 of Buffy, they really go out of their way to almost mock the way Buffy and Angel have this huge drama thing so while they are having a serious conversation and everything feels very serious there is an undertone of awkwardness, which is definitely present in this episode. I think that was what you may have been feeling. I really think the show heads were really trying to show that they could be whole, separate, awesome heroes by themselves. When they show up on each other's shows it's a little awkward. Plus like you said Angel's show has such a different vibe. Also SMG could be crying over dropping her candy bar in the sand and I would cry with her. She is TOO GOOD!

I’m so glad that they made it so Buffy wouldn’t remember bc she’s had enough damn pain in her life. Angel can cope and brood, he’s got it down to a science

"I feel like there might be a little small crossover with Buffy, but nothing else." Hahaha. HAHAHA. HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA 😭😭😭😭 Poor Alley

I just love this. Also it feels so brilliant, because this gives him a past with Buffy that Angel viewers can relate to. They will understand him brooding, but Doyle still wont. I think the characters from Buffy are now seen a bit more from Angels POV and it makes them feel different. Also some things like lighting and such can be different. I feelt this a bit when Oz did his first scene in Angel. It's Oz, and he is doing Oz things, but he is still a bit of to me. Possibly this could be why she would feel out of character.

"Is this out of character"? I think it's more of a regression of character, or at least that's what they intended. I think it was mostly for the fans who were still holding out hope they could get together. This was the shows way of saying, even if things were perfect for them it wouldn't work.

I've been waiting for your reaction to Buffy's entrance and it did not disappoint! The tea and crackers scene reminds me a lot of a comparable scene in the series Dark Angel (or vice versa, since Dark Angel came later). Don't want to spoil you for it with specifics in case you watch Dark Angel (which is good, and has Jensen Ackles in it). Buffy said, " I was really jonesing for another heartbreaking sewer talk." to Angel in this episode, so I think it was intentional. Maybe the fanfic you're referring to was referencing Angel. Buffy and Angel have been around long enough to be trope codifiers, and there are definitely multiple "this is a fic in the setting of fandom A using this device from Buffy/Angel" fics. No, this is the first time Doyle has mentioned the Oracles, and the first time he's given Angel some more detail about the Powers That Be. Like he says when they talk, he hasn't told him everything. The Powers That Be give Doyle visions to guide Angel, and the Oracles are intermediaries between mortals and the Powers (not spoilers, 'cause Doyle actually said both these things to Angel this episode). .
@thatoneguyagain22523 жыл бұрын
Doyle mentions "the Powers That Be" in episode one - they are the source of his visions, and as such they are utilizing Doyle (and by extension, Angel) in their fight against the forces of darkness. They are detached from the human world, but not disinterested in its fate. They hold immense power, so to them, Angel is indeed a Lower Being. It's no wonder that they're annoyed by Angel's visit: bothering them with the petty problems of the Mortal plane could be compared to stomping into Bill Gates' office and cussing him out about how slow Windows 10 is running.

I just finished the series yesterday for the first time. I cried 3 times and weirdly ('cause i'm not a bangel fan AT ALL ) this episode was the first where I had tears. For those who wonder, I cried yesterday and for the hundredth

Sarah did day time soaps before this i think, she is very good at emotional scenes. ive been doing sports since i was 6 and most people might consider me to be an "alpha" or whatever, but Sarah Michelle Gellar in a emotional scene, like in buffy can even get me to shed a tear lol

One of my favorite episodes, it had to happen. I saw this when it came on and on the one hand you needed a way to get more Buffy viewers watching Angel but it's the storyline of exes getting back together and realizing why they couldn't be together. Angel is a lot older than Buffy so yeah Angel was the one that needed to draw the line. Angel may look like a 20+ year old but in the show he's way older, pedo older, but that's the standard with teen vampire stories (but at least Angel waited until she was 18 unlike another vampire staying in high school).

you think she brought tissues for this episode. ugh the fact that they play their theme while Sarah cries ... speaking of I believe david says "Sarah" while trying to comfort her. I was never a bangel shipper but this was a good episode, for the heartbreak alone. I guess they just wanted to show how tragic Angel is on his own show.

I remember watching this episode for the first time more than 10 years ago and it brought back the bangel feels. The nostalgia even if I was also over them at that point.

Buffy and Angel have two very different ways of doing things on their own turf: Buffy is like: I will do what is right but i won't harm people or go too far...and i have to be the leader. Angel is more like: I will do WHATEVER IS NECESARY to stop evil (and sometimes his friends or allies will question his ethics and morals) anyone who is hoping for a happy ending with Buffy n Angel may as well drop the cake on that now...ain't gonna happen.
