Always loved the end of this episode as Angel reveals one of the main reasons he keeps Gunn around. Angel knows that if he were to turn into Angelus again Wes & Cordy would probably hesitate to kill him but Gunn would have no such problems. Angel lives in fear of another Jenny Calendar incident & Gunn is his insurance policy.

There is a blooper in this episode shown on the Season 3 DVD. When the Furies say "Mmm, Angel...", David Boreanaz pops in and says "I'm here, baby!", resulting in the Furies bursting out laughing.😂😂😂

3:18 I don't think they 'kicked him out' , Wes just got the impression that Gunn didn't care about Merle so it's like, if you're not interested in the case you're allowed to leave, so he did. Obviously Gunn doesn't hate innocent demons (like Lorne for example) which is clear throughout the episode so that's not a spoiler. It just takes a while. There was a similar moment with Riley but that was kinda different.

Mmmm, Angel! I agree that this episode is a little hard to watch, but I still think it's a really good one. Gunn has always had a foot in two worlds, Angel Investigations and his old crew, so it had to come to a head eventually. This show does a fantastic job of showing demons to be as vast and varied as humans - some good, some evil. Not many shows can make you feel sympathy for hideous monsters, yet here we go, it's heartbreaking to see those innocent demons victimised. I bet you never thought you'd grieve for Merle, did you? And poor Lorne, Caritas is supposed to be a sanctuary, and they violated it. And poor Fred. She leaves her room for the first time, the hotel gets attacked. She leaves the hotel for the first time, Caritas gets attacked. It'll be a miracle if she ever leaves her bed again. On a lighter note, those oracles are great, aren't they? Angel certainly left an impression on them. There's a great blooper where they say their 'Mmmm, Angel' line and David Boreanaz surprises them by jumping out and saying, 'Hey, ladies.' They all crack up and look so shocked, it's great.😂 Here's hoping the next one is a little easier on your nerves, Jules.

This episode makes it clear that some humans and their bigoted or close minded attitudes are the real monsters. Only thing I truly hate about it is that it makes the African Americans the bad guys yet again in a piece of media. I know that was not the intent, but it is still a bad pattern we see way too often

What is sad is that Angel always sorround of people that will chose to kill him if it's need it and for me that will always be the saddest part of his show. But don't get confused all vampires are bad not all are psico killers but all of them are murderers, Angel has a soul and chose to keep being good. But not all demon's are bad cause not all need to kill to survive. We all like Merl he was funny and kind of cute hahaha.

I feel like this episode was originally written for, like, early S2. Remember in S3E01 when Angel came home from his trip and Gunn bro-hugged him?? This episode makes no sense in this stage of the story.

I think you can justify it as, whenever he's not with his old gang he's able to compartmentalise and forget about some of the internal conflicts he might be feeling, so at the start of season 3 he's been hanging with just Angel investigations for 3 months after they went to Pylea which was a big intense moment of comradery and growing together as a team. Then Gio and his gang come back into the picture here and it's like the bit just before they went to Pylea all over again, he kinda gets guilt tripped right back into the mental place he was in.

Thanks for your thoughts on Gunn's "not friends" relationship coming out of nowhere. I had the EXACT same experience the 1st time it aired & all since then. I thought I'd missed an episode or 3! I found his attitude a bit jarring.

Basically it feels like a season 2 episode that was kept on the shelf too long. Early-to-mid season 2, after Gunn had been working with the crew a bit but before he'd spent so much time associating with good and neutral demons, I think this sentiment would have felt more understandable. Like after he'd been to Caritas a few times but before going to Pylea. Of course, other things going on at that point (mainly dark Angel) would have made it hard to place it where Gunn might have reasonably still had that kind of attitude. I believe they needed some of the events in this episode to happen to set up future events, but they needed to find a better way to handle Gunn's motivations and conflict. Especially since I don't recall seeing this kind of attitude from him again after this episode. Sometimes series make characters act out-of-character to drive the plot of an episode, but the Whedonverse is usually better than that, which makes it stick out more when it happens.

Gunn's old gang was a loose end that they had to tie off before he could really join the team. It honestly reminded me a little bit of GTA: San Andreas, when you finally make it big, how your old gang comes back, thinking you've changed because you got out and they didn't. I feel like Gunn was kind of in the same situation as CJ. Gunn got out of the hood. His gang didn't. Some of their reaction to him was simple jealousy.

Yeah, that is true. It was tough for Gunn for a while as he was so torn between them. I'm glad he came to a decision, and it's the best one for him, too.

Merle being written off is a little disappointing. There was more they could have done with that character. I didn't start watching "Buffy" and "Angel" until 2011 after I had already watched "24", so I was used to great characters with lots of potential suddenly being written out of a show at an episodes notice. Therefore these character deaths are more manageable for me because I am used to it. There are however a few deaths in the Buffyverse that are very difficult for me, even though storywise it makes sense. Some of these deaths you've seen, some you haven't. Merle was unfortunate, but not one of those difficult deaths for me.

Sorry to keep going on about X-Files on every other video, but how does it fit in with the new schedule? I can only imagine that you've already recorded it because I can't wait to find out how the hell it's all resolved and explained in the next season and I'VE ALREADY SEEN IT, lol. I just can't for the life of me remember and I don't think anyone else reacts to X-Files. In fact, I've only seen Doctor Who enough times to remember anything that happens. Shorter seasons make it easier too.

I hope you realize, upon reflection, that Joss Whedon used every episode of Firefly/Buffy/Angel as a metaphor for important elements of real-life. This was about prejudice, puttiing every member of one group together, and not differentiating good blacks and whites (etc.) from bad ones. Guy from Florida represented the worst of the broad-brush groups, like the KKK. Ppl who do right and ppl who do evil can't be identified simply by color.

@@tomswift3482 ah, gotcha, the objection is to the perceived insult to Jules' intelligence and insight. But to be fair, Jules didn't specifically address that aspect in her discussion. I'm sure she did realize that, but you leaping to her defense probably wasn't necessary either. I believe she's fully capable of reading such comments without being offended. She is really sweet though, and I get that it brings out a protective instinct in some of us. To me, his words didn't read like an insult, which is why I wasn't sure what you were reacting so strongly to. 🤷‍♂️ That's one aspect of commenting etc that is problematic, it can be hard to convey tone, or to read tone, sometimes. Your very brief comment sounded to me like either you hated what the commenter was saying, or that you thought they were being hateful. Thanks for the additional context.

Yes, I do understand there's a great deal of symbolism in Buffy/Angel/Firefly. There's so much more to every episode than what we see on screen, and it's why people have written their thesis on some of these episodes. I may not comment on every single deeper aspect with every episode, however, and that's perfectly okay.

Hello, Jules, 💜 Well, just shy of 2 minutes and this episode becomes a bummer. 🥲 Merl proves the danger for a irregular player who dares become a fan favorite, in the the Wide Whedon World. I agree with you. The fate of Merl, as well as the overall vibe of this episode is sad and disappointing. What I find even more disappointing is laying the blame, for the major portion of disappointment at the feet of Lorne. He paid the Transuding Furies a monthly fee for the protection package against violence by demons in his club, but, given the times, he certainly could have given a bit more, and opted for the human package as well. Especially, as humans are just as, or even more, capable of nasty violence in this world. Gio would still be the most despicable human. Gunn would have still been able to realize he has different goals, and possibly always has, from many of his club members, especially, Rondell, which should have been obvious from his first meeting with Gio, and the guys, in the clubhouse The same story could have been told, with the same results. If no fighting was allowed, by anything, in the nightclub The gang could still have invaded Lorne’s place, started the attack, and failed to start anything. Gunn would have still seen it was time for a split, and Gio could have made his date with Karma, in a very near future dark alley Additionally, Fred wouldn’t have had to suffer such severe mental trauma, and still been made wary of venturing outside the Hotel. 🥲 Sure Gunn wouldn’t have told Angel they weren’t ever friends, but Angel already knew that, from earlier conversations. Angel may be bad at interaction, but he is a great judge of attitudes. There were some pieces of humor here, but they paled in comparison to the horror… the worst for me was that big dopey demon with his slurpee, just minding his own business down in his sewer. 😨 The bit with Angel, “If I had...would I have brought doughnuts”, and Cordelia, in her oft times Cordy way, saying to Fred, “Angel wants you to get out.”, and Fred straightaway, off to pack, her few things. 🤣 Plus the entire opening scene, with Angel reading his cue cards to make up with Merl. However misused Merl was in this episode, he had a great last scene with the cast. 🥰 Could Gunn’s old pals end up working for Wolfram & Hart - why not, they hire all manner of folks with little to no ethics, for all manner of nefarious deeds. Since they are only looking for “fun” now it is entirely possible. Nice and emotional outro after a difficult episode. Great edit, as well. 😊 It has to be great, you got the attention of a mansplainer, and a few of his likers, even though they feel you had no clue as to the “real” things going on in this, or any other episode of the Joss shows you have watched, or are watching, evidently. Tom 🤗💜 I am SO glad to hear you're feeling much better, but saddened to hear about Annapurna. It sounds like a big mess, as is a lot of the gaming industry currently. Maybe I live in a cave (well, we know I rarely leave the house unless it is to peer at animals 🤣) but I'd think that gaming is one of the world's biggest hobbies. You'd think things would be... better for the industry. I still don't forgive them for what happened to Merl. He was one of my FAVOURITE little characters. Why not just send him away on a holiday? Alive and well? I guess they had to prove a point, so they picked (what I assume) is a fan favourite. No one is safe, it seems. Poor Merl. Seeing Merl and Angel and the little spell-casting ladies were the highlights for me. Everything else was a little confusing, and I didn't really like a few things in this one, with Gunn and also Wes. It just seemed to come out of nowhere. I agree with you - I would like to have seen it played out like you suggested. But I think if you and I wrote a TV show, it would probably contain squirrels and peewees and just general good times. Not a lot of drama to be had, but there might be an interesting night or two with the laundro crowd 🤣 Anyway, I am glad to hear you are much better today, and deservedly so 💜🤗 let's hope that this is the last one for the year, but you're going into your sick season just as I am coming out of mine.
