Angel Blue on Met role debut in "Aida" and Opera journey

I actually saw the great Leontyne Price onstage in her signature role, Aida, an experience I can never forget. I only saw her one more time, in a German opera, because she kept her appearances limited. Maybe Angel Blue will come to own this role for the new generation. Why do people like me enjoy opera? Because it’s a combination of everything - great singing, big emotions, fantastic orchestra, a little over the top. My adult children think I’m crazy!

Leontyne Price chose Aida for her last performance in opera at The Metropolitan Opera House. Shortly before her final Aida, on January 3, 1985, word leaked that it was to be her operatic farewell. The performance ended with 25 minutes of applause and the singer's photograph on the front page of the local edition of The New York Times. I was there that night. The audience would not leave after the final curtain call. The ovation just kept going on and on. They put down the fire curtain and darkened the theater, and the audience still wouldn’t leave. It is one of my most memorable moments of any of the hundreds of opera performances I have attended. She had to most beautiful voice I heard in the operatic stage. She was 57 years old and continued to give recitals and concerts for many more years. Miss Price will be 98 years old on February 10, 2025. With respect, the talented Angel Blue is light years away from Leontyne Price. Here she sings "O patria mia" in Verdi's Aida. So great to see opera in the mainstream media, and for a Black singer to be the face of American opera is a great tradition. I've heard Angel Blue as Tosca and Leonora ('Il Trovatore') and her voice is BIG and accurate.

They all forgot to mention that opera houses projects the lyrics in English above the stage or on the sides. The Metropolitan Opera has small screen monitors in the back of every single seat and you can read it there as the show plays on. They are available in English, Spanish, German and Italian. You simply select the language that suits you.

Blue has a very helpful Californian way of discussing the incredibly intricate world of Opera. For sure. How can people not understand her flow? Whilst I think her big lyric soprano will manage the big role of Verdi's Aida, I look forward to her singing nevertheless. She was the first African American to be cast as Violetta in La Traviata at La Scala. She later politicized a walkout perf at Verona Opera in the same role in Italy over I believe the war in Ukraine. She isn't all nicey nice nor does she play basic black lady ambassador nonsense. Opera singers are entertainers. That world of ambassadorial diva is last century. In fact artsists are back as private citizens nowadays days due to sharp cancel culture. She does her job well, is a congenial colleague to work with and has REAL heartfelt singing with a smooth technique. There are no affectations or histrionics nor does she oversing pretending to be a huge voice. I'm glad she waited for this heavy role because too many Black sopranos have to just jump on it with no consideration. Angel Blue is a true entertainer she thinks about the audience and what they need. This is a rare thing in the operatic world. She is reapectful of the composer.
