Angel's Egg - Fan Trailer

Angel's Egg (天使のたまご Tenshi no Tamago) is a Japanese OVA film released by Tokuma Shoten on 15 December 1985. It was a collaboration between popular artist Yoshitaka Amano and director Mamoru Oshii. It features very little spoken dialogue. Its sparse plot and visual style have led to it being described as "animated art rather than a story".
Angel's Egg did not do well with critics on its release, and Oshii stated that "it kept him from getting work for years". However, it is considered "one of the highlights of 'artistic' anime and [his] career as a director." Brian Ruh, a critical analyst of Japanese popular culture, stated that it was "one of the most beautiful and lyric films in the animated medium."

I wish. The source of the video can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6DTiKyYbJp6bdE . That's the best version as it's in 1080p AND in native 24fps. You can download it with youtube downloader, BUT the english subtitles are not embedded into the video. The subtitles are activated in the youtube video settings. You can download the subtitles separately as a file, though I can't remember what website does it. You'll have to google it around. You can open the subtitles with VLC after you open the video file, if you so choose to download it. Cheers.

My interpretation is this. The city is atop the overturned ark, which sand and dirt have washed up on over time, creating an island. The people on the ark betrayed their god (I'm a Christian but I see this god as different from the God of the Bible), so he turned away from the humans and resides inside the mechanical sun, which is the afterlife. The man, (I call him Devya) is the final loyal messenger of god, sent to gather wandering souls and escort them to the afterlife. The fishermen are too far gone, chasing and trying to kill the fish shadows, the only remaining echoes of god in this world. The girl, (I call her Claire) is the reincarnation of the bird that was sent out from the arc. She is obsessed with worshipping and nurturing what she thinks is her egg, which in reality, has nothing inside it. The obsession is harmful as it consumes her entire being. Devya has to break her obsession in order for her to join the afterlife. As a bonus headcanon, Claire has been reincarnated hundreds of times, but this was the only time that her obsession was evident. Devya has found and befriended her every single time, and watched her die every time as he could not break her obsession. So yeah, that's an unnecessary part of the interpretation, but it adds even more emotional weight to the movie
