Fascinating interview. I leaned in when the interviewer asked about her decision to join the CPUSA. Remember, this is just 2 years from the mass defections of Party members, mostly Black, that included her. But her narrative here about SNCC differs from that in her Autobiography [if I recall]. In her book, she noted the LA SNCC chapter was sort of a renegade chapter, and when HQ in NYC found out there were Communists, like Franklin and Kendra Alexander, in it, both also CPUSA members, they sent someone out to throw out the Communists and disband the chapter. I don't think the barbaric nature of this first world justice system is absorbed by many of our own friends and allies. Angela repeats here how George Jackson was given an indeterminate, 1 year-LIFE sentence for a $70 theft. But she does not highlight enough that the state of California charged her with THREE Capital crimes because a gun she owned was used by someone else to commit a crime when she was not there. The state offered no evidence she directed the incident at the Marin Co. courthouse - because there was no evidence. But the state was eager to put her to death [x3]. We should let that sink in. And this is in California, not Alabama.

@sparkelladams603
@sparkelladams603 Жыл бұрын
You are however taking advantage of all the opportunities, wealth, and privilege that has come from it. You have in no way been systemically oppressed. Angela is black and a product of rape, her grandmother was in fact raped as many other enslaved Black people were by white slave masters whom arrived on the mayflower. You do not see her as white, just like the rapist slave master did not see her grandmother or ancestors that he bore as white, they were slaves. So stop playing games.
@nothingmatters321
@nothingmatters321 Жыл бұрын
That Angela Davis had white ancestors hardly reconciles the matter. Remember that as far as the system of black chattel slavery was concerned, you were fully black if you met the 'one drop' rule, i.e. one drop of black blood. Moreover, her white ancestry hardly protected her growing up in the Jim Crow South, where she faced threats of violence from the Police and KKK daily.

The American system is sick and you think you're going to use somebody's white ancestry as a way to pacify them. You should be encouraging whites to join these movements to oppose Nazism and Zionism taking hold in America and Ukraine

All systems we have today are oppressive ... capitalism is very oppressive of the poor. Also many capitalist profit the most via monopolies. Many capitalist strive to prevent competition creating monopolies. We see this today with Google / Facebook buying their competition. Any system controlled by a few will oppressive. If we look at the way people lived before being colonized by the Europeans. All restores where equally shared, no one group of people owned the land and resources. Until we go back to that kind of life many will be exploited.
@dieselphiend
@dieselphiend Жыл бұрын
@@veganbutterfly3652 "All systems we have today are oppressive ." That's a subjective opinion. Rich men may call themselves "capitalists" but they function as fascists. Do you know the difference between capitalism, and fascism? I do not think rich people are capitalists, as they literally work against capitalism. It is the poor, and working class who make capitalism work. Is not America one of the wealthiest countries on the face of the earth? Are Mexicans not shooting themselves out of canons to get over the boarder wall? Why do you suppose they are doing that?

Communism may read “nice” on paper. It doesn’t play out nicely. The Soviet Communism which finally demolished between 1989-1991 (it took until late 1994 for the last military powers to leave Estonia for example) was an extremely oppressive system which purposely eradicated close to 100 MILLION people in Eastern Europe & the official acts of Crimes Against Humanity are findable online. Perhaps one day in the future, with AI ruling the world instead of human brains and hearts who cannot be trusted to act in a fair and just way, communism or something close to it may succeed to a degree. Until then, there is no way communism can work without exploitation.
