The song is beyond perfect, and the labels yet again ruined a masterpiece by not marketing this to the pop audience. This has flawless potential to crossover and I don't think they even shipped this video to MTV (maybe they did, I can't remember). This was a big R&B hit in 1988 but should have easily been a mega-pop smash! They really mistreated Angela and her level of creativity.

One song she did with Ron Isley had his flavor in the tune. All right, let's put this into perspective. I never thought of this song as "rip-off" of anything, but there's no denying that the guitar riff is DEFINITELY Prince-inspired. However, it was the 80s, and Prince's musical influence was EVERYWHERE...pop, rock, R&B, jazz, you name it...and he KNEW it, too. There's nothing malicious here. The song got good mileage on R&B radio, not as much as "Angel" or the material from STREET CALLED DESIRE, but this song did a'ight.

When the song came out, I was always waiting for that Prince "Owww" to pop up at some point. Since she wrote for Janet and Paula was in this video, she could have easily handed this off. But then again, when she switched labels while a duo with Rene, she wanted to reach a wider audience - and this song did - reached right on to the Prince audience...lol. Love Angie though

Now, the song to me certainly doesn't do her justice, and it was um... very weak...but it was not a flop. I actually liked C'est Toi muuuuch better and it barely made the top 50. I don't mind pop, but this song was not the one...lol

There is no correlation between her fame and supposedly ripping off Prince (not even going to dignify your other inane notion that a person can plagiarize themselves 🤦🏻‍♀️). Angela wasn't more famous for sundry reasons but one big reason is she placed less emphasis on her own career to help the Isleys stay relevant in the 80s and 90s. Many talented people are not super famous but it takes nothing away from their talent
