Today’s active lifestyle demands fashion that fits and functions. For active days indoors and out, designer Angela Wolf creates well-fitting leggings with today’s sportiest look on It’s Sew Easy. Angela uses a rotary cutter and mat from Grace Company/Truecut to cut her pattern pieces out of a super stretchy supplex fabric. She uses Dritz sports elastic from Prym Consumer USA for the waistband. Angela sews the pattern pieces together using two sewing machines from Brother International Corporation - a serger and a cover-stitch. You will be amazed at how quick and easy you can make these leggings with the Angela’s tips as seen on It’s Sew Easy.

I love it. Finally an elestic sewn to the fabric. I hate a channel made and the elestic pulled through where it can twist and half turn as if you have to fight the elestic to lay proper. Thanks .

Great tutorial! Do you think you could make one with a gusset? I feel like most of the nice leggings and sweatpants you buy will have a gusset, but none of the sold patterns online and tutorials on here feature gussets!

I had to look it up so for anyone else here it is, also I noticed in the boys pants they had those but not the girls leggings at gap kids In sewing, a gusset is a triangular or rhomboidal piece of fabric inserted into a seam to add breadth or reduce stress from tight-fitting clothing. Gussets were used at the shoulders, underarms, and hems of traditional shirts and chemises made of rectangular lengths of linen to shape the garments to the body.

I just got my Ovation and haven’t used a serger before... can you explain or show how to end the seam? I have just run off with a sharp corner but then I end up with all the loops before the end, and I have to trim them and I’m nervous about the seam. How’s it supposed to be done?

I have several regular machines, a serger and a Dream Machine, but what is a “coverhem” machine? Is there a stitch I can use from one of the other machines to make a mock coverhem stitch? Thank you.

I'm completely new to serging and am confused on one thing. How do you do the coverlock for the flat seams when the leg is a tube? Are ALL the seams done this way, or is there one seam (the final one that closes the leg into a tube) a different type of seam?

Hello Angela, you talk about using the knife to cut extra seam allowance, but the fabric bunches up towards the cutter end below the foot. How do you deal with that?

Is your knife sharp, it almost sounds like the knife is dull. Also, check the differential feed. Let me know if those work?

so angela, a 3 thread overlock won't rip out? i've always been afraid to do just a 3 thread for a seam. thanks so much for taking the time to respond!

It doesn't usually, but if you are using a coverhem over the 3-thread then you have a double strength seam.

thank you! i'll be making items that i won't necessarily want to do a cover stitch on with every seam. so, i suppose if it's a seam that's going to take a LOT of abuse, i'll use the 4 thread, or if appropriate, the 3 thread with the cover stitch over it :)

Cindi if you have a seam that takes a lot of wear, then it's safer to use the 4-thread. not sure what serger you have, but be sure to check that your 4- thread overlock stretches, some of the older sergers don't. Happy serging 😊
