Just wanted to let you know that many higher end oven manufacturers are now recommending you DO NOT line an oven. My husband ruined a 2-year old convection oven putting a liner in, we forgot that it said don't line it in the manual, we had to purchase a new one. It was an expensive lesson to remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions. My current oven also states you should never line the oven. I love your videos and have been watching a bunch of them! Thanks for producing them!

After years of neglect, I finally decided today to clean my oven using the baking soda / vinegar approach. It certainly helped, but I'm still having to put a fair amount of elbow grease into it to get the remaining gunk off. I'm thinking when this is finally done, I'm going to be much more diligent about cleaning the oven, if not after every use, then at least much more frequently than once every 20 years!

This is an outstanding instruction video, Angela! I absolutely will try the baking soda and vinegar option especially in the winter since opening the windows to clear the air doesn't work well when it is -15ºF outside. And, yes everyone, if there is major spillage inside the oven it helps to manually clean up as much as you can before running the cleaning cycle to minimize the volume of smoke and ash generated.

Thank you for this. Most of the information I already knew. But your anecdotal stories and details helped me learn even more. A friend of mine “cleaned” my oven once using cleaning agents and I was still thinking about trying the self-cleaning function. How bad could it be? Well, after watching this video I absolutely will not do that. I’m going to use your baking soda and vinegar solution, which I had heard of before, and work on it. Since it’s your recommendation, I trust it much more now. You really are an expert and a professional.

Fumes can be really bad if you're using a self-cleaning cycle and you had previously used an aerosol spray. Ventilation is the key. (NOTE - I would not recommending running a self-cleaning cycle if you are not going to be nearby to monitor the situation, just in case something like a cabinet fire happens.)

It seems to me the Fire Department or someone could have just turned off the oven from the circuit breaker instead of tearing down a wall.
@volleyballjerry
@volleyballjerry 6 жыл бұрын
Unless you knew exactly where the panel was and which circuit breaker to open - remember when your house is on fire your first job is to get you and everyone else the hell out of there. Firefighters are trained to attack the fire and not always will they know where to look for the circuit breaker panel. When this happened to me when my oven caught fire, I *did* know where to go and pulled the main breaker to the entire house killing all power and then hitting the fire with the extinguisher. Quick thinking but since I designed the house and was the original occupant, I happened to know exactly where to go. Not everyone will.

Sure but a fire is not only fueled by the electric once it started. Seen it. My oven stands alone , at least 6 inches from other items even when baking something at 450. Doesn’t look bad-in fact gives a sense of security.

Wow, what an oven boss. Thank you so much. Been renting a home for so long, tried to use oven after about 1.5 years into rent agreement and so many fumes. Noticed Oven had to be cleaned. Tried with basic cleaners (non-oven cleaners) and then noticed Oven had self-clean feature. Luckily I have very high flow fans so I ran them to blow outside while oven self cleaned. Results are still pending. What concerned me was the final note from video that it may overwhelm oven ie. 4 hours at 1000 degrees. So much for trying to make some bread! :)

There are some cases where the self-cleaning feature has worked wonderfully for some people. And if it works correctly it's fabulous. We do however recommend our cleaning customers buy those eco-friendly, reusable oven liners for $11-$13 amzn.to/2VrjrWz and just keep one in the bottom of each oven. You can cook anything you want, pie, yams anything that boils and bubbles over and it drips on the oven liner not the oven itself. When the oven is cool you slide out the liner and shake out the debris in the trash and wipe down the inside of the oven ceiling and walls with a damp sponge with a pinch of dish soap, and your oven is as good as new. Wipe off the oven liner and replace in the bottom of the oven. You'll never have to use the self-cleaning feature or harsh chemicals again. BAM!

Just had to replace my range after just 9 years when one of the relay boards died. (Replacement cost of the relay board was quoted as over $800). The repairman said it had likely gotten fried by the high temps of the self cleaning feature. And I had only used the self cleaning feature about 5 times over the life of the oven because I had been told early on that it was hard on computer components in the range.

Well, you just may have saved our house. We thought about using the self-cleaning option, but decided to hold off. Now we are remodeling our kitchen and I decided to pull the oven out, only to find out the electric oven wire was undersized. It should have been #10 AWG on a 30amp breaker, but when I opened it, it was installed with #16 AWG, ( which is smaller. the smaller the number AWG the bigger the size of wire) from the wall to the through the flex conduit to the unit. And the unit back was almost tight against the wall and sides. We'll use a safer way of cleaning. We both Thank you!

??? You are such a find! I have a a gas stove (GE Cafe - 14 yrs old) with a self-cleaning convection oven that is electric; the element is exposed, not under the base. I have read not to use silicon liners. Most say yes and some say no. Some say you shouldn’t broil with silicon liners at the bottom. My manual only says not to use aluminum foil because it can get sucked into the fan. You think it’s safe? You’ve certainly convinced me never to use self-clean feature again😀

We're in a rental; I'm buying a new oven. I can tell someone used oven spray and oven self-cleaning feature. The fumes it gives off are horrible. I don't want that on my food either. Best way I've found - wipe out with Dawn dish soap and water when the oven is still warm but not hot. If the stains don't come off, usually they come off the next round. I also loved the steam clean function - not toxic and it helped:)

Don't try to unplug the oven as the wire might be very hot and if the insulation is melted you could get electrocuted! Must be honest, this was the last video I decided to watch, since the bright colors on the back looked like a sensationalist video. Nevertheless, you answered ALL the questions we had, we decided not to use it at all. Although, I think the manufacturer explored all your scenarios, still we were not so sure. Our house was built in the 50s and I was doubtful about the power box being able to support the energy needed. The enclosure of the cupboards, the possibility of a fire, etc. On one of the videos I watched, the lady did everything you suggested not to do, she couldn't even find the start button! Maybe they are good for new homes designs, but will NOT take the chance. Thanks for the great and informative video! Kudos ma'am!

Just saying. Sounds too dangerous to use and if it eats up your heating element so why is it even a feature? Was getting started to do and backed down esp w this 105 degree California weather.

I just Moved into an apartment in the oven is filthy. I was going to do the self clean method but now I am absolutely not going to. I’m too afraid! It also has a steam cleaning function but maybe I’ll pass on that as well. Thanks for this video.

Why didnt the fire department just turn off the breaker at the load center? Or did they just want to demolish your garage in the process?

Maybe FIRE? When you have a fire and a house filled with smoke, the fire department will put a hole somewhere to get rid of the smoke to see what they are dealing with. My friend a retired fire Captain told me this just yesterday, because I asked him, why they put a hole in roofs or walls, now I know.

You prevented a fire!! I pulled out my oven and found paper between the oven and cupboard that i didnt see when i just pulled the bottom drawer out to wash under the oven. I also would not have opened a window. Enjoy your videos!! Did the family who had the fire try to hold you accountable for the diseaster??

I have one of the liners. Be sure to remove it before using the self-cleaning feature. My spill problem is where the oven door meets the oven floor. This area doesn’t clean with the self-cleaning feature. I’ll try your method. My mother always used ammonia in a glass container.

+Johnny's Cousin Steve self cleaning of it may be the way you want to go for a small rental house, the key is to make sure that there’s plenty of ventilation all the way around and that it’s not sit inside a cabinet or a cupboard where it could catch the areas nearby on fire. Either way let me know what you end up with. I’m curious to know. What you choose. 👍

@@AskAngelaBrown thank you, Angela! I’m replacing the range that’s there in between cabinets. No circulation. I’m going to get one without the self cleaning. I don’t want my tenants using it especially without fully understanding the heat and possible fumes involved.

I just used my self-cleaning feature and tried to open the oven door but it wouldn't open so I was wondering if it had melted itself on to the body of the stove! I decided to check youtube and found your video and boy, did I learn a LOT! I wish I saw the video before, I would have never used this feature! Now I know I will not do it again! Thank you so much for making this very informative video. The information was very clear and you were easy to listen to. Thanks again.

The oven door has a lock that keeps anyone from opening the door until the self-cleaning oven cycle is completely cooled down. This prevents people from opening a hot oven and having extreme heat blast them in the face.

I LOVE your videos! I have learned so much from you. We blew our oven motherboard doing the self-clean cycle ($400 repair), so we will never use that feature again. As far as the oven liner, that is great, but the sides of our oven are the problem. We eat a keto diet, so we cook a lot of bacon, constantly spattering the side walls with grease. Any great ideas other than constantly cleaning the oven? 😕 Thank you!

If it's not an oven that is built into the cabinets and is a stand alone - keeping it far enough from the cabinets to "breathe" may prevent a fire in your house too. :-)

Solution seems to be to use a countertop oven except for select items that don't mess up the big oven and clean it frequently right after use. That self clean option seems too risky. The baking sheets seem like a good idea as well.

me: how do I use the self-cleaning feature on my oven? angela brown: don’t.
@AskAngelaBrown
@AskAngelaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
LOL. Right? Don't is the easy answer. But, if you must: Step 1: Make sure that no one has used a chemical cleaner in the oven prior to the self-clean cycle. Step 2: Make sure you are at home and can monitor the self-cleaning cycle the entire time. Step 3: Make sure you can access the breaker box if you have to cut off the power mid-clean.

Thanks Angela, some clarity on oven cleaners in self cleaning ovens. Now I’m wondering if what I heard was true; that oven spray damages the weave around the door of a sc oven. I had a client keep insisting I run her self clean program but it was so dirty it caught on fire, even after me scrapping a layer off the pan.

I like the oven cleaners not a big fan of the self-cleaning option. I never thought about the fire possibility all the more reason to not use it. For a really baked on stain that the oven cleaners can't get I use a pumice stone for those. However, you will go thru them quickly so use them wisely it can get expensive.
