Just stumbled on this channel an hour ago. Am I dreaming this? A lovely Goth girl with a cute Italian accent with a perfect command of English bringing serious scholarship to bear upon esoteric subjects with such grace and charm??? This seems almost too absurdly good to be true, but there it is, unfolding before me! This is a red-letter day!😊

Opens 📜 My current operating hypothesis is actually that a great deal of modern and older esoteric power is essentially inherent to human and other persons/life. Specifically I was feeling all cool about creating my own style from intuition and basically ambient knowledge but then I read about chaos magic and was like "aw" but then "hmm" cause they really sussed it out further than me... But even now, today, I had been pondering over the power of imagination and building structures and even entities within my own mind/spirit space, discussing the details with my spirit partner/familiar and then bam! Dr Puca on the KZbin to help me out, like many other wonderful teachers here on KZbin, I cannot accurately express my gratitude, so I post~

The active and passive forms of imagination are kind of like speaking and listening; the former consciously communicates your intention to the subconscious and/or spirits and deities, whereas the latter receives and interprets communication from the subconscious and/or spirits and deities. One place where it can get tricky is discerning which messages people receive are prophetic guidance from deities and which are projections of subconscious desires or habits.

From what I saw, sometimes the morphology was very similar, but the details were novel, at least to my experience. One example was chakra meditations... in the East, you would visualize energy moving upwards through your core, and downwards through the extremities. In the Golden Dawn version that I was familiar with, it was downward through your core, and back upwards outside. The locations of the energy centers were pretty much the same in GD, but simplified (focusing on fewer). The color correspondences were a little different. The associated divine names in GD were mantras and seed syllables in the East. The astrological correspondences were unique. There were many different details, including the directionality... but there sure seems to be some Eastern influence at some point along the way, which made it through the Golden Dawn's syncretic system still recognizable, but different. They seemed to have borrowed from many sources, and changed what was needed in order to fit it into a mostly coherent system (Enochian seemed to be a different branch tho). That's from my limited experience. A thorough account of the sources of specific Golden Dawn rituals would be interesting to me... not sure whether other people would care.

I'm all in on Golden Dawn Magic. I've been at it since last December, and now my daily ritual regime takes over an hour daily. It's hard to deny that your brain just gets better and better at it. I still have not plateaued. It changes your psyche, and makes life much more enjoyable. I don't now how it works, I just know that it does.

Dr Gregory Shaw, in his works on Neoplatonic Theurgy and Iamblichus, describe that Platonic Theurgy in Late Antiquity and its survivals in post Roman Collapse society already had a multitude of visualization/active imagination and "inner world" techniques in their practices comperable, and often directly parallel to those found in the various Yogic traditions, esoteric Taoism and other Eastern practices. Because of the position of Greco Buddhist syncretic practices in the development of esoteric Buddhism and the entirety of the Mahayana/Vajrayana lineages via Gandaharan Buddhism in what is now Afghanistan from the 3rd century BCE to the 1200s, and the general close contact between Eastern and Western systems via contact between this region and regions more central to the various practices, both East and West, we cannot at all discount actual cultural transmission of these Theurgic techniques via the silkroad in either direction during these times. It seems that the Golden Dawn at the very least is working within the "spirit" of the same lineage of practices ,and attempting the same sort of results, even if the specifics of their practices are a reweaving of surviving techniques from other systems , which in fact may actually be survivals of their own systems, just preserved in a different parallel tradition.

📜📜📜📜📜📜 Interesting (and excellently presented) video! We are always borrowing and/or adapting from the past. "Novelty" is often recontextualization. I personally think that's ok. But keeping track of that lineage is important for historical records. Thank you! Also, Eye loves the phrase "eye of the soul".✨ 👁️✨ ✌️🫶🦐

One of the problems you may find in discussing the history of Magical/metaphysical practice is the contemporary development scientific and mathematical knowledge contaminating the spirit of the age. Modern knowledge of general and special relativity with the peculiarities of quantum physics forms a subtext in much thinking around spiritual discussion. In a similar way Newton's presentations and Kepler's data lead to modification how their societies viewed the planets.

I have come to realize that it matters very little where something came from, the origin of an idea, all that matters is where you heard it first. 🤷

Plaisance did a good job overthrowing prevailing nonsense about the GD being a New Age group without connection to historical magical practices. Great video, doc! Oh but Plaisance was wrong about the Abramelin influencing the GD in any way at all. Mathers didn't discover the Abramelin til long after the GD corpus was complete; which of course is why there is zero mention of the HGA in the GD.

🌭Don't look too close to my scroll. I think this discussion requires rock solid definitions or it is easy to lose track as noted in the part about guardian angels and external angels. How did HOGD view the Genius, as all divine or also a part of themselves, much like I believe Crowley viewed it later? Eliphas Levi wrote about the importance of both imagination and the will i think, again words with broad, vague and overlapping meaning so possible to slide from distinction in definitions. On the whole though I think the very strength of HOGD is that they did a lot of research regarding older practices and merged them all into one coherent system, changing when needed and keeping when it worked out. In correspondences no8 Wheeler has a great article showing just how much research went into, and how many - and old - source material went into their version of the lesser banishing ritual: "A Microcosm of the Esoteric Revival: The Histories of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram"

If we look at this supposed continuity what really comes to mind is the realisation how limited the human mind is when it comes to occult workings. underneath most of the ancient cultures throughout the wold very similar techniques lies just beneath the cultural surface. we seem to be locked into a certain universal approach regardless of time periods and cultural diversity.
