My main takeaway from this performance is how Angelina expresses her "take charge" personality. Rather than instruct or dictate her wishes in the manner most of us would: "Let's try this" or "Change that to...", for example, Angelina frames what she wants as a question: "Can we start over?" or "Shouldn't that be up a semi-tone?" (Or something similar. It's been a while since I saw the video with the English translation.) Taking this approach demonstrates that in addition to her musicality, Angelina is also a genius at diplomacy!

Here is a rough translation of what is going on in this video. Overall, you notice that Angelina is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly.

Hi Red, I think she was ten here. This is the band from norway that her father rented a studio for angelina to record the song I put a spell on you for her 9th birthday and the band came with the studio . when they heard a 9 year old girl got a birthday present from her dad to sing there they thought, Oh no another kid that thinks she can sing ? Well angelina walks in with a pamphlet for each band member with their instructions on what to do and when, She had things that said when I raise my pen in my left hand you start your part, When we get to this part everything stops and I end with my solo. She called it her list of wishes not her list of demands, She rearranged the music and words of the song. they thought they were gonna have to baby sit another kid. They were totally wrong, She controlled them from the start and they respected her. after the song they told her you call us anytime and we will be there to back you up kid.Well she called them a few times already and now they call her Boss ? I had always wished they had followed up and made a full video. This is Angie at her jazz base performance..raw and gorgeous. Look at the light in her eyes when she's talking to the band. While her mom is like, alright genius, it's almost bedtime. How does a 9 year old child in this age find " Screaming Jay Hawkins". The trumpet player did the intro on NGT Somertime. The piano player was also on I Put A spell On You with the trumpet and the sax player. Piano was on AGT first and second performance. You can also watch most of them if not all on an outdoor concert with AJ that summer. This song was also written by Screaming Jay Hawkins as “Portrait of a Man”. Angelina re wrote it to Of A Child.

Angelina is 9 here. The actual song is Portrait Of A Man by Screamin Jay Hawkins (who write and performed I Put A Spell On You). She changed it to Portrait Of A Child. I think this is the only known recording of her doing this song. An actual finished studio recording was never released. Maybe she decided not to record it after all or maybe this was indeed just a jam session for practice purposes.

It's a blues riff and most musicians know the basic progressions. The jam comes when the band members go off like the piano player and then the sax sticks his stuff in around her vocal. The vocalist can also stick their "2 cents" in as well. I wished they had her mic up a bit in the mix. The brass is stood off from the mic for a softer sound. Thank you for this reaction.

To the guys playing, she is known as the Boss. You can see it in, I put a spell on you. You see her writing and then you see the director reading it, and smiles and shakes his head. She has no problem in a rehearsal that if they are not doing it right she will stop and let them know. Chris Walker (BigAngieFan) had posted a version of this video that had enhanced audio and he obtained the help of Steinar Hatlin (from Norway) to provide English subtitles. Unfortunately that video has been been removed from Chris’ KZbin channel. This was essentially practice of Screamin’ Jay Hawkin’s “Portrait of a Man.” The words said between Angelina and her bandmates were her trying to focus in on the rhythm of the song. At the end it’s cool how she interrupts herself to add on what she considered a more forceful ending. This original song is very poignant and is a very melancholy reflection of Hawkin’s looking back on his life. That Angelina would even attempt such a complex song (thematically) shows the unbelievable maturity and breadth of jazz music knowledge she has at such an early age. I think many other fans are like me in hoping that she may revisit this song in the future. Great reaction and choice Neighbor! Keep yourself warm… there’s light at the end of the tunnel. To be honest with you, living and working in Vermont (USA) makes one used to the snow and the cold weather. Dealing with tornadoes scares the bejeezus out of me! 😬😊🥶

This is an audio enhanced version of Angelina singing “It’s a Man’s World” live in Norway. Because of site restrictions, the audio doesn’t sound as good as it could have. Red, The original song is Portrait Of A Man by Screamin Jay Hawkins. Angelina changed the title to A Portrait of a Child. This Jam session has subtitles in English. Angelina asked the sax player to adjust the volume, then turned to the piano player and asked him went could start singing while the band continued to play. Angelina decided to change the last verse, receiving the band's approval. This is why Angelina is called "The Boss"!

I would guess the pool of talented jazz musicians in Norway is much more limited than in the US simply as a factor of population. At this point she has performed at regional jazz festivals, as have the musicians, so most instrumentalists are aware of her. And guess who's going to generate the most attention/ticket sales. If I had to guess, they appear younger so again, I think this was before the cover. Maybe AJ was late 8 or early 9 yrs old. Again, just a guess. Yes. She is always doing something unexpected. She has since she stepped on a stage. We all dreamed about what she was going to do when she was unleashed after graduating from High School and she has been doing the unexpected on a regular basis. Her EP has answered some of our concerns with nothing but brilliance. Too bad you missed the closed captioning. She gets nothing but respect and the full attention of these professional musicians who are there to help her fulfill this child's wishes and try to help her realize her vision. I believe she had worked with many of these musicians for a while as I've seen some of them in other videos. Love her rehearsals. There are quite a few of them. Always worth watching. Red, thanks for another entertaining reaction to Angelina Jordan. She was 9 years old for this jam session. While I don't know if each of the musicians had previously played for her, I imagine most, if not all, had. Angelina kept quite busy after winning Norway's Got Talent, doing a few concerts, about 35 minutes in length, which is remarkable for a 8 or 9 year old. This video was likely recorded, shortly after "I Put a Spell On You" and I believe a few of the musicians were in both videos. Angelina certainly loved the music of Screamin Jay Hawkins. Still blows me away, how much soul Angelina had in her voice at this young age.

These musicians have played with Angelina before (see the studio recording of "I Put a Spell on You"). However, from this video, it appears they had never played this song together. Note that no one has any printed music in front of them: as professional jazz musicians they're simply "jamming" in this rehearsal (though Angelina seems to have the lyrics on a stand). No doubt they agreed beforehand on the key they were going to play it in, but you noticed (halfway through) that Angelina turned to the piano player and said "let's take it up a full step" -- so the pianist "modulated" up to the new key (taking a couple of bars to transition). Communication between musicians like these would usually just take a "look," which can act as a cue (like "you take a solo now"). We've seen Angelina do this with her accompanists since Norway's Got Talent (see, for example, her cue to the guitarist near the end of "Bang Bang" and to the trumpeter halfway through "Summertime"). Of course, in this initial rehearsal, you hear comments back and forth. For example, at the start Angelina asks to turn up her mic and after that, to restart the song. What's telling is this: Angelina always respectfully asks her bandmates to do something (never "dictating" to them). They in turn follow her lead, acknowledging both her musicianship and her role as the vocalist. It is out of this respect from her fellow musicians that she has been referred to as "the boss."

Greg Field, a drummer who has played with every big name since Ella Fitzgerald, gave Angelina a huge compliment at her Christmas concert in 2021. She has worked with these musicians before (at least once a year earlier age 8). Here I believe she is 9. That said this re-imagination of this song is the first time for her and the band with her re-arranging on the fly both what she is doing and the band. I should point out too, I have never seen her perform this song she is workshopping here. She must have decided It was not worth producing. Now a days she tends to do this with tiktoks (one of her labs). She will take part of something she like and perform it live for the first time. Sometimes it becomes a full performance later, and other other times not. Interestingly originals we have not seen her workshopping. Instead she will release one version and perhaps do a different version, of course live she is always modding things, like in concerts.

Red, this band did the "Spell" with her and this is also from "Screaming" Jay Hawkins. The band and AJ had so much fun. This seams as a rehearsal, to test out if it is for the stage (my impression only). Mom was watching and Grandma Mery was filming. Just for thoughts, can you imagine what it meant later on for those musicians, to work with her. I heard from LA, that working with her is a springboard for your career. I seriously thing it was the same in Norway. Telling your children: "I worked with our treasure Angelina Jordan, the famous vocalist, when she was your age." You have a good weekend, Dear. I believe this video (or another version of it) has English subtitles for the Norwegian dialog. You are missing out a lot by not turning them on. Angelina is consulting with the band, especially the piano player, rather than "directing" them.

Angelina has a stable band she, even now, works with 5 or 6 days a week, depending on whether or not they are "freestyling" (basically jamming). A lot of her original work is developed that way. The advantage is that they know each other well.

My only disappointment in this it never became a recoded song. It has always been my favorite after I Put A Spell On You of Screaming Jay's songs. The only member she knew before she met the band was the trumpet player who played the trumpet when she sang Summertime on NGT

I searched and found a reaction video of this performance done by KZbin channel owner Zeus, who is one of the original reactors to her performance. English translation.
