She sings the words for the emotional journey not for the correct enunciation, which is her greatest ability as she makes us feel the true feeling behind any song she sings.she is a modern day vocal Picasso as she can sing any genre and sings to make the listener really feel the words so who cares how she enunciated the words. She is a vocal genius.

Angelina does abbreviate consonants...this is a stylistic choice. She has done this habitually for years, stylistically. A couple of voice teachers have noted this, but unless she does theater or opera, the enunciation of trailing consonants is a stylistic choice. Angelina's wheelhouse is jazz, bluesy, R&B, so certainly she will tend to use the techniques of the genre. I prefer this in her performances, it adds the soulfulness that is so much a part of her musical interpretations...

When Angelina releases an album with lyrics no more comprehensive than la-di-da and the occasional hum, I'll be there in line for my copy. Jazz is like a by-word for improvisation. Jazz players were heavily criticised for "abusing" their instruments by classical musicians. Some of those same Jazz players subsequently scoffed at be-bop as "incomprehensible". The importance Angelina places on lyrics and enunciation is best summed up by the fact she chose a song for her national 'Got Talent' for which she didn't know some words. Such was her confidence in her voice that she decided a line of gibberish would suffice.

So I would like to understand better was she sings at time but I don’t mind . Also I keep hearing people comparing Angelina to a number of other singers but to it doesn’t matter what she sing , she always sound distinctly like herself and she is incomparable. Have fun on your journey because she sure does. Greeting from Canada.

Heard another reactor recently say that she drops consonants, etc. , especially at the ends of words, on purpose-it’s a stylized purposeful action on her part. However, if you listen to other songs, she pronounces every word and ending consonant in perfect English. So you have to assume it’s not that she can’t pronounce her words correctly but that she doesn’t wish to do so in a particular song. Interesting!

Angelina's English enunciation is better than 90% of native speakers. However, her pronunciation of song lyrics are changed on purpose for musical reasons. That's why you love it & it sounds so good. Yes how she pronounces her words or lyrics for any particular song is dependant on her choices, and it is noticeable. I can hear many different accents as well as many contrasting sounds of uncountable words if I focus on that. But that is an irrelevant pursuit and becomes more and more so by learning she does this purposefully. My point being is that a person can become a great critic with little effort, or a person could choose to simply enjoy the beauty that stands before them and maybe try looking for the good in things, we choose to be who and what we are. You stuck yourself on this annunciation kick because your ego hadn't allowed you to humble yourself, embrace it and move forward. Just an observation, I'm not picking or criticizing I'm saying it's OK to be wrong. No person on this planet is always right. If you know the words you don't really notice it. But if you don't know the words sometimes it can be difficult to understand. I believe it is definitely an artistic choice. If you listen to the three different versions of her singing It's a Man's World one version a word will be stretched in airy way not very well enunciated and in other version the same word in the same spot will be clear and articulate. She plays with enunciation depending on flow of the music and emotion she chooses.

Frank Sinatra's base player and drummer, who is the sun in-law of Henry Mancini, were in the band that backed Angelina for her Christmas Show. The Sax player was Jimmy Z who was Rod Stewart's, Etta James, and The Eurythmics sax player was part of the band. They compared Angelina with Sinatra's ability to being a storytelling singer like no other. Comparing AJ to the greats of the past would have been an enormous task over the last 50 years, but with the internet’s immediate availability of tools we can experience their best performances. My point was that at 16 years of age AJ surpasses the all the greats from the past at their peaks when they were 25 or older. Where does she go from here? Jazz is her home plate. The slurring and twisting of words to fit the feel of a song is all jazz derived. Besides that English is her second of at least 4 languages she speaks. I noticed the same about her choice to elongate vowels at the end of a word or phrase. Its a a musical choice. If you enunciate the D in child, you have to end the note abruptly. By her flowing the vowel over the end of the word or phrase and at the cost of enunciation, she creates such a beautiful and unique smoothness. But its where she chooses to enlist it that makes her so unique. Jazz singers do this all the time to add their personal interpretation. Something else to consider. English was not her first or natural language. Norwegian, then Farsi, then English and I think some Japanese also. The fluency of more than one language may also contribute. Finally, my opinion is that when she goes inside herself, closes her eyes and enters her musical world what comes out is pure musical emotion. She never sings the same song the same way twice. Her mood at the time of the performance seems to rule, as opposed to repeating what she may have memorized. Personally, the sound is so much more important to me than the words themselves.

Angelina is an Artist. Her concern is melodic flow, striking an emotional chord, and grabbing your attention with her incredible vocal flexibility. I would say sacrificing the impact she is looking for in order to ensure correct pronunciation is a pretty low priority. I think when you consider she is arranging her music, the amount of attention to detail to every note she pays, her pronunciation of all words is very deliberate.

I've read and agree with many of the comments regarding Angelina's diction. I believe that, for Angelina, the goal is for her audience to feel the music with her, not hear the music. She's talked about how music takes her to a different realm, and I think she wants to take us there with her. Her music should be appreciated with the heart, not the head, and as such, perfect enunciation is secondary, and perhaps even contrary, to conveying the emotion. I think she could sing a song in Norwegian, and we could still feel it with her, not understanding a single word.

Thank you for yet another great Angelina reaction. Agreed, there are some songs she sings where the words are a little hard to understand. I think it might be a combination of her still having a hint of her native language, Norwegian, and the effects of some of the stylistic choices she makes vocally. You have just listened to a handful of her performances so far, but I think, as you hear more, you will find that, more often than not, her enunciation is impeccable. For example, there have been many, many reactors and commenters who say that, when she did her jazzy version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", it was the first time they actually heard and understood the lyrics. MJ's original version was a production. Angelina's version was a story she was telling to the listeners. My gold standard for musical enunciation are Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. You can understand every single word they sing and even the slightest stylistic inflections they add to the lyrics. Please keep going with Angelina. Some songs are better than others, but you will never be disappointed!

Thanks for bringing the annunciation topic up. James Brown is a great example of a singer that does not fully enunciate the lyrics when he sings, and that is what makes him an iconic singer. Angelina certainly drops off consonants on purpose which is her own jazzy stylistic choice. We know that because when she covers songs that she sings very straight without adding a lot of her own unique style she sings them with perfect annunciation - What a Difference a Day Makes, Every Time we say Goodbye, At Last.

@@larryshair I totally understand what you’re saying about her enunciation Chris, if I didn’t know the word was “child” I wouldn’t Have a clue what she’s saying but I also know the other balance on the scale she is so flippin good at emoting and her tone and power are so gorgeous, her lack of clarity on some pronunciations doesn’t take away from the performance. I guess it is just her style. The other incredible vocalist I was thinking of when you made that point is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, I don’t always understand the way he enunciates words but I always love it. You should react to his MTV unplugged version of Black, it’s incredible. Wishing you and your family a joyous Easter 🌈

Not sure about the enunciation being a problem. Angelina is one of the few singers, probably the best one, at allowing me to understand every single word she says. Some singers start belting everything and I have no clue what they are saying.

You’re not crazy. It’s a jazz thing to slide consonants. I’ve had trouble understanding her in some of her TikToks. But these are really just vocal exercises with a song wrapped around them. Her enunciation in My Funny Valentine is impeccable. Also, don’t forget English is her third language so she speaks and and sings it rather well.

Hi! Thank you for another good reaction to Angelina. Yes, she does drop consonants and slur words as a stylistic choice, which is what many of the legendary jazz singers did. If you bear in mind that in her performances she will use any of the many tools she has in her "music box" she considers necessary to truly reflect the emotions in the lyrics and melody of the song she has chosen to sing. I have just browsed your Angelina Jordan Playlist and note that you have reacted to many songs where her enunciation isn't as "mispronounced", e.g. "Autumn Leaves", How great Thou art", "Every time you say goodbye". I copy below three other songs where her enunciation is clear: "A million years ago" (Adele cover): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3mvpY2HaNh8rac "The show must go on" (Queen cover): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bH-tp2NopNlooMk "You make me feel so young" (Frank Sinatra): kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5KuoXmieZmHm6c This was originally sung as a duet in the film "Three little girls in blue" and Angelina sings it as a duet in her performance.

Regarding her enunciation: Every vocal coach ever would probably tell Angelina to enunciate more. I, for one, hope she never listens to them on this point. Probably the one thing that draws me into her songs more than anything else.... more than her beautiful tone, more than her unmatched vibrato control, more than her ability to make the perfect vocal choices for any given song.... more than any of those things, it is the natural way she sings that sets her apart from the pack. She sings the way a normal person would talk to you, and there is a level of comfort in that. If you've ever talked to someone that over enunciates, you know it can be very disconnecting. Like they are trying too hard. Angelina never seems like she is even trying. It's that organic flow she has that pulls me in. I assume this is the case with many others as well.

This comment by you stimulated my brain again. It is a problem I have been experiencing with the topic of Angelina Jordan. I'm too old for this. God works in mysterious ways. Anyway, the "perfect vocal choices" you point out may I suggest are caused by what I here and now define for my personal understanding as controlled by her emotion modulator. This description is in no way associated with the sociological use of the phrase. My comment earlier may clarify my intended meaning. Best wishes.

Adele used to miss consonants off words in her earlier years. I remember because my daughters loved her but it annoyed me that she sang that way. As a youngster (I'm in my 60's now) I sang in various choirs so my training was...correct and precise enunciation was an absolute. Amy Winehouse abbreviated consonants too yet I absolutely loved the way she sounded. I realised the difference was soul. It made sense (to me) when Amy sang with abbreviated consonants because her voice and music was soulful. Adele sang with such power and her lyrics were incredible but I never felt the same soul in her voice, (in my opinion). When I hear Angelina sing Adele covers, I feel the difference between Adele (who doesnt seem to abbreviate consonants in the way she used to) and Angelina is Angelina's warmer tones, melisma, soul and jazz. (In my opinion), the difference is striking. Occasionally, I feel my past training begin to surface and think "oh....she should have enunciated that better" but mostly, I love what Angelina does with the lyrics and music of her covers. ❤🌹

As a foreigner, meaning a non-native English speaker, Angelina must have been exposed to various types of English from her teachers, her "entourage", the peoople she was in contact with when she was a child. She must have been influenced by the singers she used to listen to, so as a result of all that, she does not have an "accent". You can't tell whether she's got a British accent, an American accent, Canadian or Australian for that matter. That will probably change with time as she's living permanently in the US now, but the influence of other dialects and accents will remain with her and add a charming quality to her singing. I myself am a non-native English speaker, and English is my 3rd language after Arabic and French. I've had a multitude of different teachers, some from my own country, some British, French, American teachers as well, and out of all that, I gathered a mixed accent. Now listen to Angelina's "7th heaven", you'll notice in the last verse she uses British English, a cockney accent.

Normally I don't listen much to the text of a song. If a song hit you from the first second, which often happens with Angelina, you don't really bother what the song deals about. When that is sad, I think that Angelina is easy to understand, but she has this as you said, jazzy, breathing tone that sometimes hides some of the words a little bit. She kind of breaths out the words, but it's very cool I think.

In a song like this, over enunciation is a bad thing. This is a song of sadness, pleading and regret. IE If your daughter is sobbing in your arms, she will not be speaking perfectly clear. IMO an artist should muddy the lyrics a little. Adele's version is enunciated more clearly yet lacks some of the emotional punch of Angelina's. There is a singer from Asia with a beautiful voice that was crystal clear. Even enunciated the song better than Adele. Hit every note with a really nice tone. And it was dry as dirt. If a computer could sing, I found the rendition. Angelina plays with each word that is sung and I love it.

But I also have to say that without Adele we wouldn't have these covers.🤩 I find that Angelina is often very close to the original and yet her version is different and clearly recognizable as hers. Are 2 geniuses meeting here? I hope for many of Angelina's own songs. But she is only 16 and still in school/college. We'll have to wait a few more years. But then we'll have an artist of Adel's level -- or higher. I wish you and your family a happy Easter Greetings from Germany

IMO, this is one of her very best performances. Adele was my most favorite singer at one time. But her voice is not quite the same now, unfortunately. Angelina, in this cover, makes a number of stylistic choices that elevates her performance. Dare I say it, her performance delivers more than that of Adele. I was so moved by Adele's singing and her video Easy on Me. without the impact and the storytelling coming from the video, however her radio performance is unfortunately ok, Here in this video, Angelina just stands there and delivers one of the most emotional performances I have ever listened to.

I used to teach ESL and sometimes l hear a second language pronunciation in her words (the word sewed in House of the Rising Sun for example) however most of the time it is a style choice to drop consonants. Do remember that even though she seems fluent in American English, it is her second or perhaps third language.

Great, thanks! But, I think most of the time she enunciates very precisely, to the point you'd think she would be tripping over the sounds. It's a choice to slip past a 'hard' sound. I believe it's called creative license, and she's demonstrated her right to use it! I feel you are caught by her age - thinking she can't know what she's doing. She knows exactly what she's doing. If you need the lyrics look them up. There is SO much music in which you can't understand the lyrics.

Other than the fact that you may have forgotten that English is a foreign language for her she is from Norway and fluent in three other languages Norwegian, Farsi and Japanese and has been since she was six years old. In a lot of her covers you’ll find she is reading reading the lyrics while singing in some because her mother didn’t think it appropriate for a girl her age to sing she had rewrite the lyrics a perfect example is back to black and rehab. I am an American who at 74 thinks her English is better than most teenagers of American and English decent. Many people will attribute that “lack” of enunciation to the fact that English is her second (or third) language. I don’t think this is the case. If you immerse yourself in classic jazz and blues (like Angelina has since the age of three), you’ll notice that that creative enunciation is deeply connected with the improvisational nature of jazz. I will see if I can dig up some examples from some classic American jazz singers. Nice reaction! 😉

Hi Chris! Good to see you back, doing AJ reactions! Other fans may have said the same thing, but I'll go ahead and repeat them: it's a deliberate choice. She, and others, often, shorten or lengthen the words they pronounce to create a particular musical effect. In songs she has done multiple covers of, there are differences in enunciation between them on certain words. You may also have noticed that she also changes how and where she ends a musical phrase; compare this to Adele's version and you'll see a couple of places she does it. You should also listen to the TikTok version she did on the very day Adele released the song; another KZbin singer - Allie Shaddock I think - also did a full cover of the song on the day that the original was released. Compare the two, just for the heck of it .

Hmm. Larry, I never have trouble understanding her words. Her enunciation has been something I've always noted. With her I have heard the words of songs clearly for the first time ever. She bends her vowels a lot, something noted by many vocal coaches/trainers. Yes, the jazz stamp, but the way she handles consonants and vowels is part of the jazz stamp. Sometimes she lingers on those consonants and paired consonants (such as "ng"), sometimes her tong barely acknowledges their presence, but I always understand the words. I see it as an essential for her story telling tool bag. Now, if you were singing, you might make different artistic choices. You asked and this is my response. Your reaction skills are excellent and I hear that you are a fan of Angelina Jordan's voice and talent. I have to get moving. I did not sleep last night due to pain and I have an 11 am zoom appt. so I must stay awake. After the oatmeal, I'm nodding while typing. This crazy old body! Grandma Ellen, at daybreak. 💜

This opinion of the "enunciation" of Angelina Jordan is that she is instinctively deliberate. In this comment I express the intent I tried to convey in one of my original comments about her singing. This opinion is in the form of a question that I hope can be interpreted metaphorically. When you hear a baby (close to newborn) express themselves, do you understand the enunciation or do you focus on the emotional state contained in the baby's message to define the meaning of the baby's vocal expression. In other words, do you react to the emotion and instinctively know what message the child is expressing? I am not a professional in any area of expertise that addresses this issue. I can only rely on my instinctive reaction the first time I heard this talented young person sing. My perception and interpretation apparently, as this comment indicates, has not changed. I doubt it ever will. Angelina Jordan is very talented to say the least.
