No, Angelina did not put a spell on me. She amazed me. She shocked me. She delighted, entertained and pleased me. But another put a spell on me first, leaving me immune to Angelina's magic. I love many, maybe even most of the dozens of Angelina performances that I have been privileged to see. But once a performer has burrowed into your heart, they can not be displaced by mere greatness.

Larry, two comments: first, there’s no question that Angelina is a better singer now than when she was very young, but I love her earlier singing as much as I love her now. Her very early performances, like this one or Gloomy Sunday stand on their own. They blow apart what you thought you could expect from a very young child. Secondly, I don’t think Angelina will ever have the popularity of Elvis or Michael Jackson, etc. They were performers for mass audiences. Angelina is an artist with incredible vocal skills and musicality. But that will not necessarily appeal to mass audiences. Her fans, like you and me, will know we’re hearing a once in a lifetime talent, but Angelina will be more of a niche singer like Norah Jones or Amy or Tony Bennett. She is better than anyone I’ve heard in my 70+ years-second place is not close. I could listen to Angelina every day-and I do. I’ve never felt that way about any other singer.

They are all crazy talented and I hope they all are successful in their life’s pursuits. Having said that my eyes sprung a leak the second Angelina started singing Summertime. She does that to so many of us that yes, I believe she put a spell on us. I’m a 72 year young white male with two sons and nine grandkids. I saw Elvis the first time he was on Ed Sullivan’s show and watched the girls screaming. Those same girls now in their mid to late 70’s don’t scream or cry when Elvis videos come on I bet. Angelina Jordan (born Angelina Jordan Astar; 10 January 2006) is a Norwegian singer whose audition for the 2014 season of Norway's Got Talent, singing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday, became a viral video online and brought her worldwide press coverage at the age of 7.

two Billie Holiday songs, "Gloomy Sunday" and "I'm a Fool to Want You", on Norway's Got Talent, as well as "Fly Me to the Moon" on a TV talk show, all went viral online in March 2014, she was featured in Time,[1] Daily Mirror,[2] People,[5] and other news outlets around the world.[6] She continued in the competition singing Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" live in the semi-finals,[7] and won with her performance of George Gershwin's "Summertime", in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's 1958 recording of the song. In September 2014, she performed "Fly Me to the Moon" on the US television show The View,[8] bringing her wider fame in the United States. She also performed on several TV 2 programs in Norway over the next few years, including multiple appearances on Allsang på Grensen (Singalong at the Border, referring to the border fortress of Fredriksten where outdoor concerts are held) and on TV4 in Sweden. I think that you are confusing Falsetto, for Vibrato. Angelina is also on TV during this, not just in front of the judges and audience. She has stated that she never gets nervous, that she loves to sing, and that she always has fun on stage, it’s her favorite place to be. Angelina is truly a gift to the world. I have never, in all of my life (I’m old), heard an artist that moves me with every song. Another reactor said it nicely, and succinctly, other singers are great vocalists, you hear them and appreciate their talent. Angelina is not just a vocalist, but a true Artist, that resonates in your soul, and makes you marvel at her talent.

Please be honest if you hear something to criticise about Angelina. I've been looking for something for a while, but aside from a couple of early performances where she was ill - and one can't fault her for the fact that she went ahead anyway because they were charity events - and even then she was amazing. So far there is just ONE criticism I have to make on one song, but as no one agrees with me I'll say no more!

There’s a video of her practicing for this number with band members, and she is showing the trumpeter how she wants it done! When the competition started, she was just 7 years old and had just turned 8 by the final. You can watch her teeth growing in from the beginning of the competition to the end. Be sure to watch her second song which she sings a capella, age 7, and blows everyone, including the contestants, away!

I _so_ wanted to comment halfway through your reaction, but I was able to control myself until the song was over (but not until the end of your reaction). I like the things you pointed out about the performance, but there are so may other things you didn't comment on. For example, I was hoping that you would notice and comment on her look off to the side and smile at 5:40 (in this reaction video). Think about that: she's midway through her _final_ performance in this competition, being broadcast live on TV, and she takes a moment to smile at someone in the audience! Talk about "being present"! I don't know if it was one of her friends or family members, or just a random audience member who caught her eye, but regardless, I find that far more remarkable than her look towards the trumpet player just moments earlier. And then that thing she sang off-mic at 6:30… she is singing (her version of) an ad-lib that Louis Armstrong sang in the original version that this arrangement is based on (his version with Ella Fitzgerald for their joint album _Porgy and Bess_ in the late '50s). To be specific, Louis sang something like, "Mmm-bop, don't you say, oh!", and Angelina appears to sing, "Don't you say no". And finally, something I haven't heard or read anyone else point out: at the very end, when she repeats "Don't you cry" three times (after singing it "normally" as the final line of the verse), in the first repeat she bends the pitch _ever_ so slightly as she's singing "cry" (at 6:49), and then in the second repeat, she bends it _much_ more noticeably (at 6:55, right at the end of the same word), and so quickly that it almost sounds like her vibrato "getting away from her". The first one is so subtle even I have a hard time hearing it, when I'm specifically listening for it. The second one you can't miss (once you notice it, anyway). Both of them seem so intentional and yet at the same time almost "accidental"… I really wonder how planned they were.

Agreed, she just improves every year. I too prefer her more recent voice. She is very musically aware, almost as if she is watching her own performance. This is very different to Aurora who IS her song.

Hi Larry, Angelina worked closely with the trumpeter and the musicians. There are videos of her showing the trumpeter how she wanted it played...it's amazing. There are other videos of her at other venues where she keeps requesting the band to perform the song the way she wants it. Example, "Angelina Jordan Rehearsal (AT LAST) Part 1 2014" at 8 years old, she asks her mother to tell the band to make adjustments (tempo, loudness etc) on 3 occasions until they got it to her liking. She knows how to make a song sound good regardless of age. You are shortchanging yourself if you miss her performance "FEELING GOOD" Live on the Stream Gir Tilbake at 10 on stage with a full jazz orchestra. I don't think even today that Angelina could improve that performance. And it's her arrangement. Thanks Larry

Thanks Chris for commenting on this wonderful Angelina gem and for the wonderful reaction. I absolutely love all her 4 performances at the NGT. One of the judges of this edition (Lisa Tønne) said, after his first performance, with Gloomy Sunday, "you Are the Music" and really I think that this is the best and most concise description of this little girl. She does not channel, use or absorb the music, she is truly pure music, everything to her seems so natural, simple, easy ... it's not, but she really makes it seem that way. She really is like she is the eighth muse 💛 🧡 ❤️ Her unique and fantastic way of slowing down the phrasing and the music, makes me think of the perfume distillation process, it's as if she stretches the melody until distilling its pure musical essence, I love her voice 🤗

This is as good a version of this song as I've heard in a very long time. Angelina's vocal technique and skill is amazing for an 8-year old. She doesn't use falsetto in this one; her vibrato has always been stellar. And it is ALWAYS captivating to watch her sing. 😎

It's called Vibrato. and she developed it very early on, when listening to this same style of Music. Angelina has the Unique ability to "Mimic" the artists she adores. (In another world, she would make a great impersonator)
@yiuqwfj2 жыл бұрын
You can truly feel the "cry" in her voice here. I believe that was the purpose of using that strong "vibrato". It makes this rendition very special and unique. I've followed Angelina for quite some time now and you can be sure that her way of singing would always reflect the lyrics. She prioritizes the lyrics and emotions over the tone. I think that approach sets her apart from many other artists.

One on the best and most beautiful videos Angelina has made i think is Howe Great Thou Art is. Would be fun if you want to make a reaction of it

I can agree with you that her voice and her technique is more developed by now, but what is truly impressive at this young age is her deep understanding of music. When I first heard her audition piece, _Gloomy Sunday,_ I was astounded by the way she sang. Not so much by her voice and technique, but by her phrasing and musical artistry. When I then heard her acapella performance of _I'm A Fool To Love You,_ I realized that she's truly special. There are very few people in the world who has shown such maturity in music at that tender age.

Like all true professionals, I believe Angelina focuses on input and the outcome is what follows. She fronts up does what she’s done so many times before gives it her best, finishes curtsies and leaves. As always greatly appreciated from an Angelina and Larry’s Hair fan down under

I kinda lean towards her winning with her 1st performance, maybe 2nd, ok could be her 3rd, no it was definitely "All of her performances"!

Hallo Chris, the first song in this competition was a cover from Billie Holiday "Gloomy Sunday". At this time she was only 7 years old. The second song was a cover from Nancy Sinatra "Bang Bang". Both are also wonderful. You talked about Elvis. There are some songs she covered. Very special "How great thou art". She was 14 years old. At the age of 9 she sang 2 songs from Alan Walker on a concert with him. Greetings from Germany

I think you have got her age wrong when she sang"How Great You Are",I think she is 12 or 13,most likly only 12.

@@frankjohansen9364 Hallo Frank, thanks for your information. I looked to the YT-Video published by Yozhik v Tumane. He wrote it was recorded by Angelina late in December 2019 with Happy New Year greetings. This is only a few days before Anglinas 14. birthday on 10. Januray. So she was 13, if Yozhik v Tumane wasn't wrong. By the way, 12 or 13 or 14 years, Angelinas talent is beyond her years.

An insane performance by an 8 year old ❤ The way Angelina sings the word Daddy the second time, is so good that it hugs my soul ❤ Have a great day 👍

I adore Angelina's growth as an artist over the last couple of years and I listen to her newer stuff a lot more than the old. OTOH, older videos like this have a "Dear God how is this even possible?!" factor that's hard to beat.

A combo of recorded sound track and trumpet. For the inspiration, check out a very famous performance by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

There is another from NGT that I am hoping someone will react to. She sang “I’m A Fool to Want You” A cappella. It is amazing but after you listen to that, someone has taken the Billy Halliday backtrack and placed it behind her a cappella performance. Suddenly you hear what she is hearing in her mind. Each minuet choice she makes, each hold, release, quaver suddenly makes sense. I just heard this recently and never thinking she could blow my mind anymore than she had well my mind was gone. Pretty amazing.

Nice one Larry. One of the great performances of this song ever and she is 8 years old. You hit on some very big names in music history, and in my humble opinion, this young lady will be right up there with the greats, considering how great she is at age 15. She has a long ways to go to get even better (not sure if that is possible) in her career so don't sell this super talented music genius short on achieving the same stardom if Republic Records promotes her properly. Enjoyed your comments and reaction very much....continue on Larry.

Same here. I could appreciate she was unique and all but it really wasnt my style, I have followed her since she auditioned on Norways got talent. Even seen her randomly on the street a few times😊, but anyways, she has always had a great talent but now she has fine tuned it more. And she is also more than twice the age as when she sang in Norways got talent. Been amazing to follow her journey, she really is unique and her range and power is awesome. Plus her tone is just magical! And she has always just come across as sweet, smart and humble! Her English level at 13 sounds like a native American, not a Norwegian girl with an accent.

Hi Larry, thank you for this great reaction to my favourite performance by Angelina. It is supersonic in talent .Her phrasing, timing and vibrato are perfect! Her raspy voice I love.I prefer her older stuff like this as I love her singing jazz songs, she just does it so well,it's like she was born to do it.My favourite part of this song is in the second half when she sings-'Oh your daaaaaaddy's rich and your ma ah ah is good looking.'with that rasp on the word ma, it's fantastic. It's a shame about Stranger, hope we can see it soon .Cheers from New Zealand

THanks fora great reaction Larry. This one is one of my top favorites from Angelina. How could she be so into jazz at this age? Because she had been exposed to the great jazzsingers for 5-6 years already by her grandmother. There is one piece from when she was 6!, her first time in studio (at her school) which is almost as impressive and showing some great voice control - doing 'I who have Nothing' kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJu0i354pbuUm9U , one of Tom Jones signature songs. AND she reads and sings in English which is her third language! Norwegian is her first (her mom), farsi her second (grandmother is iranian), also grandfather is Japanese, and her dad is Swedish ... So quite a few influences ...

And that’s her Dad jumping up holding a sign with the dark sweater at the end. He was back stage hugging both daughters after the Gloomy Sunday performance.

Nils Bjarne Saltnes, this is the usually sayings about her heritage, but a couple of days ago,an Iranian was correcting this by saying that she has no Japanese heritage. He said that he knows her grandmother from when as a teenager he was living in Iran, she was then married to an Iranian man,and he is the real father of Angelina's mother Sara and her uncle Michael.Only later she met and married her so called Japanese grandfather.I don't know if this is correct, but I hope so.

@@frankjohansen9364 Wow, this was new to me. I read that her song A Million Miles is written in rememberence of her grandpa, maybe she meant her step-grandpa. Growing up I'm guessing it would be her grandmother's current husband that she bonded with. Guess we'll keep eyes open to more info on this. Angelina did sing one verse of a song in Japanese when performing over there which I interpreted a Japanese grandpa would helped her to learn/pronounce.

Larry. You saw that look to the trumpet player but what you might not have noticed, the very first shot of the video actually showed that player and you see that he is the same one who Angelina visually talks to on two occasions of 'I Put A Spell On You', seemingly giving each other signals in both videos.
