Sometimes people compare young Angelina with older Angelina. I don’t think anyone should do that because her younger performances are absolutely astonishing and stand on their own. Of course her voice keeps getting stronger and better, but her performances as a very young child are the best we have ever heard. So-after this beautiful performance, take a moment to listen to 7 year old Angelina audition for Norway’s Got Talent with her a cappella version of this same song. She does not miss a note. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gonOn3-QedSFjLM Also, other singers seem to use vocal ornaments as embellishments to their songs. With Angelina, her vocal fry is really just another musical choice from her bottomless vocal toolbox. It flows into and out of her straight tones seamlessly, as do the textures and vocal dynamics that are woven so perfectly into her songs. This video shows how effortlessly she can dip into that toolbox.

When Angelina says she wouldn't be the singer she is if not for Billie Holiday, this is a good illustration of that. She's singing here for her grandmother who also adored Billie and I'm sure Angelina was intent on bringing as much of the essence of Billie to this presentation. As a huge fan of Billie, all I can say is that Angelina is 'spot on' with capturing the true Billie.
@joeseay28832 жыл бұрын
She sounds almost exactly like Billie Holiday.!
@ridgemanron2 жыл бұрын
@@joeseay2883 What you say is eerily true and goes back to her first audition, at 7, when she sang Billie's 'Gloomy Sunday'. That was when all the talk about Billie being reincarnated into Angelina, for if you listen to both singers, it sounds as if one singer performed both renditions. Her being acclaimed a 'vocal chameleon' really was reinforced shortly after she turned 8 and sang Dinah Washington's iconic version of 'What A Difference A Day Makes'. Angelina can replicate the sound of so many A-list artists that it's mind boggling. Even on the 'pop' side (You don't Own Me by Leslie Gore) and country side with Patsy Cline's legendary song 'Crazy, just to name a few others..

Keep up your informed analysis. In her presentations she is often experiments with various approaches until she gets to a point where she is satisfied. And we don't recognize that she is a perfectionist who works literally for years until she gets what she wants. The problem is that it appears effortless. And it is anything but that...

The original audio version is available from the Angelina Jordan Fanclub Mozars channel, which is her grandmother's channel. This is the audio from her album, which was a different performance and maybe from a different mic. I like the original.
@DonaldLancon2 жыл бұрын
The last half of this take we are watching her record, from the point where the album cover slides away from her face up to (but not including) the last line, was used on the album. The other parts (first half and the last line) were taken from one or more other takes. I agree that it's preferable to hear the original audio (i.e., the ambient sound recorded in the booth) if someone is going to watch this performance. But it's even better when you compare the two (album track vs. sound in the booth), because it reveals how little processing they did on her vocal for the album (just a little added reverb/"presence", like she did in her own recordings at home with "the good mic", but nothing beyond that). And just for the record, she actually sang this with the band playing live in the adjacent room(s). Some of the musicians can be seen through the windows as the camera pans around at the end. (They're even more obvious in some other videos recorded during the same sessions. Unfortunately, none of the other videos where she's singing contain any vocals heard on the album, so they were all from alternate or rehearsal-only takes.)
@capstan50g2 жыл бұрын
@@DonaldLancon Hi Donald! I just went back and listened to the audio from both videos and I think you may be wrong. There are very subtle differences, as well as a left out or changed word. In the album audio, she sings, "But then WOULD come the time..." whereas in the Fanclub Mozars video she sings, "But then COMES the time...". Also, the downward run on the end of the word "time" is a little more pronounced in the Fanclub Mozars recording and always gives me goosebumps. The two performances are very similar during the section you mention, but being able to reproduce a vocal performance is a standard recording skill that's used to get the best doubled sound. I'm sure Angelina, with her great lip-syncing abilities(another essential skill for a modern pop vocalist so that music videos look their best) can easily perform two almost identical takes. If you have some inside knowledge from the engineer or producer, I beg your pardon.
@DonaldLancon2 жыл бұрын
@@capstan50g Yeah, I usually say "almost all" of the last half of the song when I talk about this, because you are correct that that one line is different. But otherwise everything else I'm referring to is *exactly* identical. If you listen to the two audio recordings synced up together (played simultaneously), you will find that the line just before the one you referenced (namely, "Time and time again, I went away" - the one that she seems so impressed with after she sings it) is the first point in the song where the two vocals sync up perfectly. Getting the sync right is _very_ difficult at first, because the vocal takes are not the same in the first half of the song. But I tried doing that again just now, before typing this reply, just to be sure of what I'm saying, and I happened to nail the sync _perfectly_ at the beginning of the song. So perfectly, in fact, that there wasn't even an "echo" or "reverb" effect when the two vocals snapped into sync. It literally sounded like one track was being played, not two. (To be specific, I was using the audio I personally ripped from the CD for the "album audio", and, of course, the Fanclub Mosarz video for the "booth audio".) Anyway, after the line that is different again ("But then would come the time…"), everything from "And once again…" to the second to last "Without you" is perfectly in sync again. Then, finally, like I said, the last line ("I can't give it up without you") is different. Playing the two tracks in sync makes it absolutely, 100% clear that it's the same vocal take for those portions. I wish I could record what I am talking about and post it somewhere, but I can't. (I would probably need to import both tracks into an audio editor to get the sync as perfect through the whole song as I just lucked into doing "manually" just now.) You'll just have to do the experiment yourself.
@capstan50g2 жыл бұрын
@@DonaldLancon Thx for the reply and all the info, Donald! I've played around with home recording myself and also like to nerd out about Angelina.
