Nina, Angelina sang this in a tender, emotional way because the recipient, Narges Mohammadi, who is a woman's rights advocate currently in prison & on a hunger strike in Iran. Her twin 17 yo children (boy & girl) & her husband live in exile in France & haven't seen Narges in over 9 years, so that's who Angelina is singing to. The song is originally from a movie about a man who is unjustly held in prison & longs to be with his family again, a most appropriate theme for this solemn occasion. To me, the ending sounds of Angelina's falsetto are some of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard & brings me to tears every time. Great analysis/reaction Nina, you are always on point. Thank you!

The more I listen to this performance the more I see in it. Watch her facial expression, too, especially as she ascends into the final section. She is really feeling it. You know that the recipient of the Nobel Prize, Narges Mohammadi, is the same nationality as Angelina's grandmother, so I imagine there is a personal connection here.

I like how the orchestra totally dropped away when she sang "Wait for me" at about 7:30 here. This had the effect of focusing attention on that particular phrase, which, of course, encapsulates the entire meaning of the song. And then at the end, they dropped away again just as she started to sing the "me" kicking off the spectacular closing run (made famous by Bobby Hatfield in his live performances of the song). I love how Angelina is never afraid to have her vocal "spotlighted" like that. And in this particular case, the way she pulled back a bit at the very end - what you referred to as "sweetness" - gave that final note a delicacy and, frankly, an unsteadiness that made it seem like she was right on the edge of that note "falling apart", and her voice possibly breaking (which actually happened when she performed the song on the TV show _Lindmo_ at 9). Mad props to her for having the guts to sing it that way.

I love the way Ms. Jordan can transport us to the remembrances of the past, but let's not forget that this young living legend is a contemporary, a masterclass artist that is continuing to experiment with tone and technique to create a newness in music, that will dominate world music for decades to come. It will be Ms. Jordan's creativity in lyricism and musicality, that will captivate the world in the coming years, to make her name synonymous with greatness. ♾ Rb

Nina thank you SO much for your thoughtful, perceptive analysis of this masterpiece of a performance. Narges' children - twins who are the same age as Angelina - were in the same room and had just moments before been stating in an interview how much they miss their imprisoned mother who they haven't seen in 9 YEARS. Another reactor thought they saw a dried tear streak on Angelina's face. She is especially gifted at choosing the exact right song and interpretation for tributes such as this. I'm certain Narges' children and husband, all living in exile in Paris, were even more deeply moved by this performance than we were - and many tears have been shed by angels listening to this, well, angelic rendition.

Wonderful reaction, thanks Nina. She is the beautiful young and unique singer who has already sung on 2 different occasions at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony, at just 17 years old! Her ability to move those who listen to her is absolutely incredible. What a sweet, fascinating and intimate interpretation of this mythical song, absolutely suitable for the occasion of the tribute to Narges Mohammadi! I was moved to see and hear Angelina singing in such an incredibly mature and charming way, this wonderful version of a fantastic song and so appropriate to the occasion, 7 years after the last time, in the same studios and with some of the musicians who accompanied her as a child, when she took her first steps into her musical future. Here Angelina was simply fantastic and "unchained".💛🧡❤

For me her soft and quiet approach musically wasn't only appropriate, but it met the orchestral arrangement in just the right way. She allowed her voice to become a true part of the composition and arrangement. And yes, she also added her own style, but not in some way to show off, but rather to show up. I thought her own vocal arrangement to meet the orchestral was as impressive as anything else about this performance. Truly sublime.

Seeing you reacting to this .. this morning made me happy. This was a tribute to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi who is in an Iranian prison for her activities for Human Rights in Iran .. in that country you can't support freedom for women without dire consequences. Her twin children, boy and girl age 17 were in the audience .. and in fact were sitting at the front near Angelina while she sang. The original song was from a 1955 movie titled Unchained .. a man singing of his love and longing for his loved ones while in prison. This makes this tribute very appropriate and why it was sung and the "why" Angelina sang it the way she did. Note that Angelina's maternal grandmother Mery is Iranian which makes Angelina 1/4 Iranian herself. I believe she speaks Farsi too learned from Mery.

Her voice is capable of producing the most exquisite sounds, from the softest whispers to the most powerful belts. She can sing in any genre, any language, any mood. She can improvise, harmonize, and mesmerize. She is the finest musical instrument on the planet, and we are lucky to hear her perform. © Larry D. Pifer

Synergy is the combined efforts of individuals working together to produce a joint effect that is greater than the sum of the parts acting alone. The collaboration between Angelina Jordan and the KORK Orchestra at the Noble Peace Prize Ceremony 2024 was a remarkable display of musical excellence, and synergy. The young singer's soulful voice and expressive interpretation of the song, Unchained Melody, captivated the audience and complemented the orchestra's rich and nuanced sound. The performance was a fitting tribute to the peace laureates and a celebration of harmony and diversity© Larry D. Pifer

In 2014, a little Norwegian girl was named and codified, a national treasure by both the King of Norway and the prime Minister. That same year, she sang for the Nobel peace prize winners all at the age of 8. In 2023, that same girl, now almost 18 once again graced the Nobel peace prize stage and sang for the recipient once again. That young girl is none other than Angelina Jordan. Angelina Jordan made history with this performance. Angelina is the only solo singer under the age of 18 to have performed twice at the Nobel peace prize concert. When I learned the story of Narges Mohammadi, this years recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the history of the song "Unchained Melody", I fully understood why Angelina Jordan chose this song. P.S.: Angelina arranged the music and vocals for this performance. She thanked the director of KORK publicly for allowing her to do this.

Michael, nice comment but will add that Angelina is almost never do the final music arrangement but she has a clear musical intent she communicates about and then either the conductor or other skilled musician (sometimes the producer of music recording) arranges the musical framework out of her musical intention (it's a teamwork). But neverless it doesn't diminish her almost ingenious way to interpret (reconstruct) songs fr very young age. 🙏🇸🇪

Nina, I'm sad. I knew you would love Angelina's performance in this beautiful setting with a full orchestra and I wanted you to play it all over again for us. But, the beauty of these video's is that I can play this one over again if I so desire, which I will. Angelina sings with such emotion she touches our hearts when we listen to her sing. In this particular performance she had reason to be even more emotional (if that is possible!) because of the circumstances involving the event. The Nobel Peace Prize Award was given to Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian woman imprisoned in Iran because she spoke out about women's rights and the oppression of women in general. Her husband and two children currently are living in France and the two children (twins, a boy and a girl in their teens) went to Oslo for the Ceremony to accept the Award for their mother. Angelina's connection to the moment is interesting. She was born in Oslo and this is not the first time she sang for a recipient of the Peace Prize Award, she had also done so as a young child (I believe at 8 years old). Angelina's wonderful grandma who has had such a great influence on Angelina since the very beginning is Iranian and, she too, was a child prodigy recognized for her achievements as a painter and poet. So, that connection was very clear. The Norwegian orchestra and Angelina had been together years before and were familiar with each other. 'Unchained Melody' was thought to be a perfect song for the situation and, as usual, Angelina put her spin on it and slowing the tempo and as you said, Nina, made it a very soft and touching version of the classic melody. In the rehearsal stage Angelina knew she was getting very emotional about the woman's situation in prison and being separated from her family and was worried she would breakdown at the Ceremony. But, obviously she did not and was spectacular. Nina, at one of your pauses you recognized a phrase as the best, so far, and it was at that moment when you could see and hear the great emotion coming from her voice. It is so much more than technique, it was straight from her heart. Btw, during the performance the woman's children were sitting right in front of Angelina. Some details about Narges Mohammadi is that she has been imprisoned for several years and at one time during her imprisonment the Iranian government considered releasing her from prison BUT, with a condition, that she would no longer speak about women's issues. Narges met with her family and, of course, told them how much she loved them, how much she missed them and wanted so much to be with them again as a family. BUT, she reminded them how strongly she felt about the issues she raised and told them she could never agree to such a condition. So, she remains in prison. Another factor involved is she said if she was released she would remain in Iran and not leave the Country. It was reported Narges went on a hunger strike and I don't know anymore about that but we all hope she is okay. In summation, I think it was a wonderful gesture by the Peace Prize committee to issue the award to Narges (given to her children) so as a way of never forgetting her dedication to do what she believes has been the right thing to do. Nina, when you play it again, perhaps after hearing the story behind the event you can understand what this must of meant to Angelina. On a personal note, I couldn't wait till the time you would react to this performance. And, you didn't disappoint. Thank you so much.

Nina, great reaction and analysis as usual. Thank you! One of the things that always leaves me in awe about Angelina is her musical and emotional inteligence. She always knows how to "taylor" a song to match either the original intention of it or the circumstances surrounding each performance. In this case, her approach and arrangement was sincerely intended to honour Narges, her children and husband who were in attendance and the plight they are going through. In my opinion, her delivery and that of the orchestra sounded like a prayer, supported by powerful lyrics that, if applied to Narges situation, are perfect: her desire to be with her family and feel their love, the loneliness, the slow passing of time, the reassurance that she will get back home. Another thing that makes this performance more impressive is that it was live, at the Nobel Peace Prize concert (such responsibility!) and that she must have coordinated the performance with KORK long distance and have maybe two rehearsals before the actual presentation. UNBELIEVABLE!

Absolutely wonderful reaction Nina. I agree that Angelina is able to use her phrasing so wonderfully throughout the song. Even though I agree with you, it may sound a bit loose, but it flows so well together in her vocal with her dynamic control in and out and her wonderful vibrato just really add to her emotional connection with her audience. This is what makes Angelina so great. Is that she is able to free flow because of her jazz influences from a young age that she understands how to manipulate her vocal techniques to give such a dimensional emotional experience to her audience. I could feel her emotional connection of this song through the lyrics that she projected and I could feel her heart and soul totally behind every word she sang. This is one of her finest live performances to date. I can imagine that not many 17-year-olds could get up on a stage like this in one of the most prestigious events of the world. She is singing to the recipients of this award, with a magnificent orchestra, live audience and to a national TV audience of millions and just becoming totally immersed in her stage delivery and performance ! . I believe that Angelina Jordan was meant to sing and is really at home on the stage. As you can see, keep hosting my friend. You are so much appreciated by all the angels all over the world. Great reaction to the greatest version of Unchained Melody that has ever been performed in its existence since it was written in 1955 and performed by more than 1000 great vocalists. Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize 2023 This video is a masterpiece that I have watched more than 100 times coming from Oslo, Norway. Every time I hear the KORK Orchestra begin playing, I feel a surge of emotion because I know what is coming next: the most amazing rendition of Unchained Melody by the incomparable Angelina Jordan. She has a voice of an angel and a talent beyond words. Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize 2023 Some ask why Angelina Jordan would pick Unchained Melody for this event, Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist who received the prestigious award remains in Iran. One of the most popular and enduring love songs of all time, Unchained Melody, has a surprising origin. It was composed for a 1955 film called Unchained, which tells the story of a man who is incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. He yearns to be free and reunite with his wife and children, who are waiting for him outside. The song captures his emotions of loneliness, hope and longing, and has been covered by many artists over the years, but none in my lifetime of 76 years have conveyed such emotion as Angelina Jordan did at this performance. © Larry D. The first time I ever listened to Angelina she was singing "Unchained Melody" back when she was 9 years old. It was incredible and I was instantly hooked. But, what a contrast 8 years later. Imagine what the future holds... I've listened to dozens of reactions to this performance. Yours is by far the most enjoyable. Your knowledge, honest delight and appreciation for this very special performance is so great to watch... Thank you so much.👣👣💕

Wonderful reaction, Nina. This version of Unchained Melody is even better than the live version I heard her sing at Portsmouth in September.

Yes, purposely subdued with subtle measures and then the end is exquisite. It gets me every time when she hits the first sustain with vibrato. It is operatic. So fitting for the context. I enjoy your analysis. We can see a baby singing laying on a bed at 18 months old to this.

I think you may be my favourite reactor Nina. You know your stuff, and educate us in a great way. Angelina made this a gorgeous and deeply meaningful piece of art. How she managed to keep her composure here and not have a breakdown is beyond me. Just think of her iranian heritage, how AJ gave her shoes away, and the two Mohammadi twins before her. She can and will change the world. She already has.

The parallels to Ms. Callas are uncanny. However in Ms. Jordan's case she is the true unicorn. No one in the musical world that has graced this world, has effected so many and compelled them to be better to themselves and others, just by the force of being. A truly historical moment in musical history. ♾ Rb

Angelina inspires me to do what I can to help make the world a better place, so I am asking all angels and others to spread the story of Narges Mohammadi. Angelina was recorded here in December 2023 at the Nobel Peace prize ceremony in Oslo Norway, performing this beautiful version of Unchained Melody. She paid tribute to Narges, who is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two twin children, who are 17, spoke on her behalf at this event. The more people who are aware and call for change, the more likely the leaders of Iran will set her free. Acts of kindness are inspirational, as Angelina always reminds us. We angels, and all others must honor Angelina, and those who represent our values, by doing all we can to help, and be kind to others. Even the smallest gestures can make a difference. If you have not already done so, please provide artist links to the official channels, social media and even links to Spotify and iTunes, as many reactors have done. Most importantly, encourage your viewers to use those links the same way as you do for your own channel. That will help ensure her success and spreading peace and love to the world.
