It's true that Angelina didn't come here alone. Her grandmother, at least, is a poet and, above all, a painter of the highest caliber - and has been both since she was a very young child. Angelina moved with her whole family from Oslo, Norway to Los Angeles, California in early 2018. In Norway, Angelina was accompanied by Egil Clausen during such home recordings, so her manager was looking for someone who could take on the job in LA, and Ivan Mendez was chosen. Ivan is an amateur musician and a business consultant by profession. Because of his job, he has a lot of free time from March to September every year, and usually he plays with an amateur band then but during that time frame in 2018 he played guitar for Angelina instead.

Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his KZbin channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell ( I mean in summary, I can't give an interview of almost 40 minutes in two sentences, please listen to Ivan Mendez yourself. ) "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody " OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand.👣 💯 *AJ* 💯👣

Rhianna had a huge hit with this song that was heard by the public only after extensive takes in the studio with a host of professional musical accompaniment. Angelina's rendition here was an 'at home' presentation she did with her friend Ivan following her lead as best as he could. Angelina also was not fully familiar with the lyrics and can be seen referring to a tablet or phone at her side for the lyrics. While doing this she re-arranges the song 'on the fly' in this 'one take masterpiece' that brings forth much more emotion laden penetration to the listener than Rhianna's.

The mic is very sensitive, it's a Neumann TLM 102 that was given to her for her 12th Birthday by the Norway Military Band that she recorded the album "It's Magic." together. She upgraded to an even more sensitive TLM 103 when she was 15. She incorporates her breathing sounds as part of the music. She takes many small breaths like she is struggling to catch her breath to convey emotion, then she can turn around & belt a note for 15 seconds. Her breath control is phenomenal!

Great reaction, Zack! Angelina was 12 years old here. Every time you see these two perform together, Angelina was ALWAYS 12. I believe the mic is a Neumann tlm 103. Possibly a 102 🙂 Just like you said, when you listen to Angelina cover the song, the song kinda takes on a new meaning, as you LISTEN to the words. But WHY do you listen to the words when she is singing? It's because of the way she emotes through her delicate, minute details. Ones that you don't necessarily understand that are there (at least at first listen), but that together paints a VERY detailed picture, something that draws you in. You want to HEAR what she is singing so beautifully. Emotionally invested. As you know by now, this is what she does. Each and every time, over and over again. Those unique differences in the song, phrasing and colors galore, are touches Angelina at 12 years old decided to embellish the original with and, frankly, they are so beautifully natured into the song it is impossible to believe any 12 year old could do what she did. My point is that those elements came from somewhere deep inside her, a place where her feelings and understanding of music are stored away and are waiting to be heard by music lovers all over the world when Angelina brings them to life. After listening to Angelina sing 'Gloomy Sunday' on her audition on Norway's Got Talent one of the judges commented to Angelina, "YOU ARE MUSIC!" And that is so true. She was 7 but anyone listening knew it was impossible to conceive a 7 year older could do what she did. She has said she goes off to somewhere when she sings, she doesn't know where but it is beautiful and the feeling is so inherent in her she has also been quoted as saying she is most comfortable in her life when she is on stage singing for people. And all of her artistic qualities are delivered with a sound so soulful she touches our hearts and we know exactly when that happens because we lose tract of time and everything else going on around us. She takes us to that beautiful place with her when she sings and we grab on and don't let go.

The guitarist Ivan Mendez said in an interview they would pick a song and he would learn the chords while she went over the lyrics. Start to finished recording in usually one take. Two hours start to finish with a song neither of them knew previously. She got that mic for her 12th birthday from her friends in the Norwegian Military Orchestra.

This rendition, which I have probably heard 100 times, showcases Angelina's talents in spades. And, as usual, she does it while reading the lyrics on her iPad, to her lower left. Just note the white-blue complexion on the left side of her face! Here is a fact that you can use to estimate her age: that wonderful Neumann TLM102 mike was given to Angelina as a birthday gift from the military band with which she made the album, "It's Magic," when she was eleven-years-old. However, she did not receive it until April of 2018, when she was already 12 years, 4 months old. It made a huge improvement in her recordings, since she was using the equivalent of a karaoke mike before that. Then, in mid-2018, she and her family moved to Los Angeles and she needed a new guitarist. She chose Ivan, the guitarist in this video. Within about a year, she was no longer using him, however, and was accompanying herself on the piano, guitar and backup recordings. Less than a year after her appearance on America's Got Talent - The Champions, just before she turned 14, she signed with Republic Records. The Emmy-winning Rob Christie, Republic's L.A. studio director, was (apparently) assigned to guide her development. He has accompanied her multiple times in Republic's and his own studio. And she has access to the professional bands needed for her original and cover songs. She has continued a production relationship with a Norwegian duo named, "Stargate," with whom she co-wrote several songs. In the past two years, she has worked on songs with Toby Gad, a very successful songwriter and musician.

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. The musician is student, immigrant from Mexico Ivan Mendez. Mendez moved to the United States when he was around 12 years old and says that the transition was difficult at first. “I don’t want to say it was a culture shock, because it’s not the same move to America from Mexico as the move to America from say, Europe…but I would say it was somewhat of a culture shock.” Leaving behind his mother and hometown of Colima in Mexico, he says, was extremely difficult. “The first year was really hard, trying to learn the language, trying to adopt a culture, trying to get friends. It was just everything,” Mendez said. He said it took him about two years to really pick up English and find himself friends who would help him with his new language. “I tried my best. Every time I was in a class, I’d sit down and watch how people move their mouth. Try to pick it up from there,” he said. “I’d repeat a lot, everything I heard. Somebody would say a word, and I’d repeat it until I got it down.” Mendez felt it was extremely important for him to assimilate to his new home. “If you move here from another country, you must learn English in order to succeed. You can get by just speaking Spanish, but you’re not really going to go farther than anybody else.” “Ivan’s just been on this great journey and path in life and so we saw an opportunity to help him along with his journey,” said Joe Coughlin. Mendez says his new family was a perfect fit and that the adoption was the influence that split the old Ivan into the new Ivan. “I started to get so much more education about everything; life and even music perspectives,” said Mendez. Majoring in business marketing, Mendez says his priorities are school, then the band, then helping out with the family business. Although music is a passion of his, he says being an international student means he has to choose his educational career path carefully. “Because I’m an international student, fees are very, very high for me, so if there’s a class I want to take, I really have to think about if I’ll get something really good out of it.” He says a three-unit class for him costs around $1,000, which is another reason why he chooses to major in business rather than music. He says he does have to sacrifice a lot for all the work that goes into being a student and musician.

In an interview with Ivan ( guitarist) he said that when he would do these videos with Angelina, they didn’t have a plan. She would find a song on her phone or tablet and he would spend a moment learning the guitar part. Then they would record the song, usually in one take.

Do you think that Rihanna saw this performance and that was one of the reasons Stargate Production signed Angelina Jordan? Stargate Production Co.
