Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his KZbin channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell ( I mean in summary, I can't give an interview of almost 40 minutes in two sentences, please listen to Ivan Mendez yourself. ) "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody " OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand.👣 💯 *AJ* 💯👣

Rihanna had a huge hit with this song that was performed in a totally professional studio and after numerous takes, it was released to the public. Angelina decided here to do a casual 'at home' rendition with her friend Ivan accompanying her on guitar. Neither was fully versed in the song and Ivan can be seen following AJ's lead as best as he could. Angelina had to constantly refer to a tablet or phone at her side, and while doing this she re-arranged the song 'on the fly' as she sang. The result was a performance that brought forth more emotion laden penetration to the listener than Rhianna's.

Tank you for your thoughts. She has a tone that goes straight through you and makes you happily relaxed. Mendoza, the guitarist, told in an interview, playing with Angelina there is only one take. If there occasionally was an other take it was only because he himself messed-up. It’s like Angelina picking-up something from our top singers, as in your case singing in the car, but makes this world class in a go. 🤯

I love these sessions she did with Ivan Mendez. He has recounted how they would hang out, pick a song, run through it once or twice, then Grandma recorded it. One take usually, unless Ivan messed up. Did you watch his face during this? AJ checking the lyrics off to the side. Raw, under rehearsed and stunningly good.

The really mature sounding voice you hear here developed when she was still 10. She has always sounded mature for her age (well, at least from 7 or 8 onwards), but before around 10½ her voice was still noticeably "child-like" in certain ways. At 10 she seemed to lose the last vestiges of those child-like qualities. The next "great leap forward" happened when (or shortly before) she was 16. You say she sounds like a full-grown woman here, but that really happened at 16. It makes you wonder what she's going to sound like in, say, 5 or 6 years (i.e., mid-20s), when most women (singers) are just starting to reach their full vocal maturity.

Do you think that Rihanna saw this performance and that was one of the reasons Stargate Production signed Angelina Jordan? Stargate Production Co. (Beyonce, Rihanna, Sam Smith) Can you imagine sitting next to the genius of Angelina and hearing those hypnotic, heavenly sounds coming out of this lovely child. No one on earth has this ability, she is in a lane of her own.

I'm not sure she has a bad song, and if she did, how would you know? Her rendition of "If I were a Boy" wasn't my favorite but that's only because I already have a fav version of that song. You do need to pick it up and try to keep up with the request. lol You won't run out of material to do, there's always someone else.

This cover queen you mention has penned over 100 songs of which 16 have been released..she plays 3 instruments and has been arranging her own performances since the age of seven. She has mastered 9 different genres and accumulates 1 million streams per month on Spotify alone which approaching 6 billion total social media and streaming hits..has been delivering live full concerts since the age of 8. I could go on, but the point being she’s way way more than a queen of covers. Cheers.
