This is the cast I saw with my now late partner. They were all exceptional - but our takeaway was “Oh, my god…Jeffrey Wright is brilliant!”.

The dream scene was such a joy to watch! Also, Joe Mantello was the PERFECT Louis! Oh my God!

I think Ron Liebman broke the mold with Roy. No one has ever quite hit every note the way he did.

Except Al Pacino, who did it much, much better in my opinion.

Joe Mantello was stunning as Louis. No question. THE BEST. I've loved many of the shows he has directed, his work is major, but I do wish he acted more, because he is such a brilliant actor. thanks for posting this.

Is there a bootleg of this version somewhere? I NEED it. Joe Mantello as Louis seems like such a good fit.

He was superb. I saw this on New Years Eve 1993. Both parts back to back. Also revival with Nathan Lane in 2018.

Al Pacino was even better in that role in the HBO miniseries Angels in America. Much better, IMO. He was absolutely devastating. If you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

There must be a full version of this somewhere? I have seen the NT Live version, perfectly good, but I would LOVE to see this one. Anyone? I can pay? 💰

Greetings from Brazil! Thank you very much for uploading this video. We study American Theater here and this is very valuable for us. I was in NYC last year and I managed to see the whole 1993 production at the NYPL Performing Arts Library and finding this piece here will help to relate more to that opportunity.

Thank goodness I saw the original run on Broadway this is the first time I've seen this. In between laughs and tears I'M still astonished..

THANK YOU! I saw these two originals and was wrecked (in a good way). Such amazing productions with ancredible cast and direction by the genius George C. Wolfe. just reviewed some of the 2018 revival and (other than Nathan Lane) hated ever bit of it.

The only one I liked in Nathan Lane production was Andrew Garfield. After seeing Leibman, Nathan just wasn’t believable as Cohn.

Lmao people either love the OBC and hate the revival, or vice versa - there is no in between😂 I’d say that I like the revival more, probably bc I’ve watched it a million times and it was my therapy for junior year of high school last year. Denise, Russell, and Andrew’s performances are so incredible 💯💗 Edit: “Heaven, I’m in Heaven” is so good in this version😭 Marcia put so much heart into her lines, like she still cared for Joe in that moment, but her heart is now broken and she knows she has to leave him👏🏻👏🏻

Ron Leibman WAS Roy Cohn. He had all of his ticks and his voice down pat. Unfortunately, I saw this with his replacement, F. Murray Abraham - a great actor, no question - but he was totally wrong for the role. Nathan Lane is one of my favorite actors, but from the clips I have seen, he was also miscast as Cohn. He seemed to be playing Nathan Lane. Leibman was a terrific actor (remember "Norma Rae"?). Pacino did the role justice in the film version as Cohn - was a perfect role for him.

Nathan Lane was excellent in the role. He didn't misfire in the role in the way I worried he would. He was absolutely amazing, and he didn't turn it into a broad comedy. He really was one of the best things about the revival, along with Denise Gough as Harper.

Pacino WAS Roy Cohn. He absolutely owned that role. I agree with you on Nathan Lane though - I absolutely LOVE him and could watch him just eat oatmeal for an hour - but he was miscast.

Would be interested to hear your specific impressions as a theatre audience member of the 1993 Broadway production versus watching it at home on HBO.

I completely disagree. The rebirth of the broadway with the spider-man guy is, indeed, less well done than the miniseries, but this original 1993 run was very good. On par

Having seen both original parts on Broadway, I would say while the HBO was a good adaptation for the screen, but could never match the theatrical impact of what this was in 1993 and 1994 in a live audience. Ron Leibman could wipe the stage with Al Pacino. I can still hear the voices of the Broadway cast in my head; the HBO movie not so much.

@@zakh.c8207 No. Too difficult to get permissions to do that then and now. It's a rare thing to get a live Broadway performance of a running show (not a one-time event) recorded.

Played for laughs too much, there was nothing funny about anything that transpired in the play. I can understand a laugh or two but this version was too much.

oh wow, i couldn't disagree with you more. there's a lot to laugh at (with) in the play! it's not completely devoid of joy nor are the characters so stark that they have abandoned their sense of humor. the subject matter is bleak, often, but even still - in the worst of tragedies, people use humor to cope and sometimes it's actually quite good.
