You who say Susan Boyle sings this better do this because you haven't heard Helen's swedish version or you cannot understand the emotions with which she sing's it. This is Helen Sjöholm's song, no one else. She is this song. I've been listening to it for 20 years (soon) and this song is the only thing that have managed to challenge my atheist belief. Swedish original: Du måste finnas - Helen Sjöholm (Kristina från Duvemala)

Sweden, Sweden, Sweden, what talents you create! What is it with this little country in the North? Answer: one of their treasures is / has been that they have a natural aptitude for singing and for music in general. It is in their genes. See for example "allsång på Skansen", Stockholm, where they meet and sing together once a week in the summertime. And their people's soul goes very, very deep. ABBA was one of the very first artists to be known outside of Scandinavia. A big hug from Norway, neighbour of Sweden.

I don't understand swedish. Although I heard the swedish version first. I felt the deep emotion, the way Helen performed the song, and I am glad the translation in english told me what the song was about. I can listen to the swedish version of the musical "Kristina von duvemala" without getting bored. It's a great achievement from all the performers and from the writers Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Thank you for the music!!!

Listened to the entire opera in Swedish without understanding a word. Got a rough idea just from the music, not to mention the emotion of the performances. The internet soon filled me in. Funny story: Was playing it in my video store when a tall blonde woman came in. “What’s this?” she said, pointing at my Bose radio (& CD player). Thinking she was American, I started with the ABBA connection, butchered the last word in the title, but was soon interrupted by her saying, “I know. I’m from Sweden. We hear it constantly.” I thought that was incredibly cool, but she seemed to be a bit put out. I’m still baffled by that.

The Swedish version is so different, so much more raw. That song makes me want to cry because Helen sings it with so much emotion because Kristina is blaming God for her hopeless situation and is exhorting him to exist, whereas in the English verison she is begging God to be there for her. It is so mild compared to the Swedish one.

Beautifully presented couldn't be more perfectly performed. I cry because this is our world today where multi millions are slaughtered and put off their homeland! Their wealth, life, liberty are stolen. Spiritual trust in the true God must be shaken! This song puts me there with these people and I cry for them. But don't anyone dare blame the God of truth. Time is quickly closing for humans to turn to him and to seek love and peace on earth with one another in God's love by his mercy and grace.

I prefer the Swedish version since it was the original language it was written for but it’s great to have the original singer doing the English version at least 👍 My Swedish husband sent me this CD because he knew I loved musicals and I absolutely fell in love with it! I learned a lot of Swedish from this musical too. The story is so amazing and the musical is so beautiful. The musical is based on the books and there were also movies made in ‘71 and ‘73 called The Emigrants and The New Land. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it....brings a whole new meaning to this musical. I have been hoping since 1999 that they would bring this musical to the US. Happy to see there is at least an attempt to do so with an English version but I’d be willing to go anywhere in the US to see it.

This musical should be on Broadway. It has the best music of any musical in the past 50 years. The two concert performances at Carnegie Hall (English prmiere) were a big success. But are audiences accustomed to the Disneyfication of Broadway capable of appreciating music as great as this. It is by far the best thing Benny and Bjorn have ever done. It leaves ABBA in the dust.

Yes, I agree upon hearing Helen Sjoholm's version of my new personal anthem, "You Have To Be There" is more intense, filled with emotions, more melodious like it resonates to a woman's yearnings, plea for deeper love, it comes very very touching. In fairness to Susan Boyle's version which was the first for me to hear, it is strongly delivered as well, but I am looking for an inner depth of it like the angst I had when loving my man. Great, Helen Sjoholm!

@Mi Picasso you cannot compare the UK to Sweden, as there are only 9 Million living in all of Sweden and more than 12 million in London alone. Helen is without a doubt one of Swedens most famous and loved singers. This is HER song, she was the first one to perform in in 1995 and she has been around for that long and is still well known and loved. I have Heard Susan Boyle singing this song and she jus does not have that Little extra thing that Helen has. This is and Always will be Helens song. I have Heard Kerry Ellis sing this song and she is a famous broadway singer and she can't sing this like Helen. It is about understanding the character Kristina and her faith in God. No-one has been able to transform that and deliver that message to the stage like Helen.

Susan Boyle sings automatic and try to sound good without passion just the same sound over and over. Ive got ADD/Aspergers and Susan Boyle seems have it too cause its like press on and off stereo when she sings. I love Susan and she sings it well, and I get somewhat emotional in the end. But it cannot be compared with how Helen sang it in the Minnesota concert. I like this one a lot but that gave one shivers and made one weep. Swedish suits the melody best, that is only natural. The number of records sold is not the only criteria, Susan was a sensation in the beginning and that still rubs on.

I only speak a little Swedish, but I have to say that the song sung in Swedish is better than in English, if only because the flow of the original Swedish words is more lyrical than the English. That's understandable, because the music was composed to the Swedish lyrics. It's the same with "Les Miserables". The original French lyrics are much superior to the English because the music was composed to the French words. It's extremely difficult to translate lyrics well!

instead the english version repeats the metaphor of the sea. In swedish, Christina is blaming god, saying You god YOU did this and this to me, THEREFORE I am suffering this and this, SO what SHOULD I do NOW? see it's a paradox, she doubts god but can only turn to him about her doubts, asking what, since she's not sure what to believe anymore- because of what god has done to her- she is to do. so it is apparent that she still believes in god since she is asking this very question.

The difference between the other singers who attempt ''You Have to Be There'' and Helen's version is that they sing the song but Helen lives it. The perfect voice to match the intended emotion of this wonderful song written by the greatest pop duo of all time Bjorn and Benny ( Abba ) and here I include Lennon and McCartney.

The person merely expressed an opinion. I don't understand the French musical Romeo et Juliette without subtitles but I can recognize that it's far better than the English version. The same goes with the musical Elisabeth which is far better in German (even though I cannot understand all of it) than in Swedish, which is my mother language.
@Sharpclaw200011 жыл бұрын
the swedish one is sort of "better", but for a reason, not to compare just for the sake of comparing, but rather to discuss how a text is translated: in the swedish version she sings a very powerful and honest/emotional sentence: "om du inte fi(a)nns - VAD skall jag göra DÅ? / if you don't exist, WHAT can/should I do THEN?" it's a very desperate statement that anyone can recognize, it encaptures the feeling of the song and for some reason isn't included in the english version...
@kl69026 жыл бұрын
実・沙海 exactly, the Swedish lyrics are far more emotional and moving than the English words.
@TheMarkoPolo20115 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you lose a lot in translation because it still has to have the same melody and rhythm, which is impossible to do with direct translation, so lines have to be changed. Any musical translated is gonna lose a lot in translation. Look up the original French lyrics to “On My Own” from Les Miz and you’ll see just how much meaning a song can lose. Lol
