That's the joke in this movie, where Dave hardly gets angry at all but everyone sees him as very angry. The plane incident was also that joke. What adds to the joke is that Sandler playing this character is also much mellower in this movie than he was in some of his others like Happy Gilmore

And the others probably reacted the way they did to Dave's "very mild" outburst because they thought Dave may snap any minute. They were less worried about the others because they were explosive angry guys. Knocking out your boss is less serious than shooting everybody in the store.

Yes and there in is what is so genius about this. He is deliberately telling Dave how wrong each response is because this in it self is a TEST. That is why they are laughing.. because they all got the test. Seriously.. Go ahead and ask a friend or family member "Tell me who you are" And keep telling them how what they say is wrong.. eventually they will show you what KIND of person they are.. either by exploding.. or by just walking away.. or by cussing u out.. or by apologizing and telling you how sorry they are for not understanding. This in essence tells you what kind of a person they are. Its so smart. I have tried it ! :)

This is actually a pretty good strategy to see how angry clients can get: how long it takes them to snap and how badly they snap. By doing this, Nicholson can get an idea of how much work he needs to do on Sandler.

Jack was great in this movie. All but one scene, that is. Jack had one not very good scene in this movie, when Dave tells him about the phone call about his mom having surgery and Jack starts crying in the weirdest and very fake looking way, and he was supposed to have been upset for real in that scene because Dave then says he kidding about her surgery being serious and Jack then says how he can't believe he fell for it. But his crying looked so weird and fake, and also calls out "no more clam chowder!". Who cries like that for real?

Huh? It was just a test and had really low tolerance. The whole point is that he was clearly in fact not trasparent especially with his nervous foot twerking and lips biting and all those nervous movements, he was repressing his anger. It is not a gaslighting move but actually a move to notice how much tolerance to angry outbursts he has. Still there is no "fear management" or "cowardice management" because the system is corrupt. They don't want you to get rid of those usually. And we know why, it creates perfect 🐑.

They also want to control your anger, because God forbid, you might actually direct it where it belongs like the forefathers of the American Revolution did against the royal crown. They want you angry in a different way. One that has you fighting with your fellow man, committing violent crimes, or even better, harming yourself. Also keep in mind the Soviet Union weaponized psychology against political dissidents. They used techniques similar to this to declare dissidents as "not well."

Love reflecting on the philosophical aspects of this as well though. Who you are can best be expressed, not described. Partially because of the tendency of people to hide their true selves or present only what is acceptable about themselves due to pride and a need for acceptance. Plus “nice” and “good” are basically not helpful descriptors anyway because they do very little to distinguish anyone as an individual.
