When my (paternal) grandmother passed I was there to hold her hand. Afterward, I was crying and I felt my father's hand on my shoulder. I shut right up. I didn't want him to be distracted from HIS loss by trying to comfort me.

Just wanted to throw it out there that not every unfortunate event/circumstance is traumatic. It becomes traumatic if the person who experiences it, identifies it as traumatic. Based on what he was taught, he doesn't identify certain circumstances as trauma rather he idenitfies them as a part of life. And how powerful is it that his grandparents took his mom's burdens and others' burdens off of him at a young age. So he isn't carrying his mom's decisions because he leaves her pain with her. He chooses to LIVE for his cousin because he realizes that is what she would've wanted and that he isn't going in the grave with her, so to speak. So he lives. It takes many of years and hours of therapy to come to this place that his grandparents put him at a young age. So beautiful and powerful.
