I found the background to the photo shoot very enlightening. I read an interview years ago by a photographer who photographed Janelle for a series called Interview Without Words, which appeared in a major German newspaper. His experience with Janelle Monae did not match my impression of her from interviews and her art. His experience was similar to the one already described. now I can understand it and see where it comes from and understand the motivations. Which I'm glad about. And I think it's great that she takes responsibility and opens up to others. I can learn a lot from that.

First and foremost this interview was great and both ladies are absolutely amazing at their crafts and as people. However, I could definitely sense some slight bumps in the convo they were navigating. Janelle was throwing slight shade and correcting Angie. Angie made a generalization about artists that didn’t sit too well with Janelle. I also noticed that Angie started to feel a bit insecure towards the end of the video as Janelle leaned into deeper topics. I also noticed Janelle wasn’t willing to broadcast all the deepest parts of her in this interview, and tbh I really don’t blame her. And all the experienced she did touch on and share were enough for me and were impactful all on their own. All that aside, this was a deeply necessary interview and I loved it.
