I've been eating fried mullet and roe and tails since i was 6 years old and im 56 now used to be a staple in my house growing up and i enjoy mullet every chance i get and they're even better smoked my Dad used to send me out with a snatch hook many an afternoon after school to catch us supper yet another great video that mullet looked good!!

Im cuban and when i was in Cuba i used to eat mullet left and right,for me ,when it comes to fried fish nothing beats mullet,we also make slices we marinate them and then we fry it ,yummyyyy!

I was born and raised in the Florida Keys. We never ate mullets like this. The only way we did eat it, was Smoked. Now that I'm in 60's, I might try it fried.

About 6 or 8 thousand years ago there used to be a thing on the East Coast of Florida called the Zellwood Cord festival and it also coincided with the mullet run near Sebastian Inlet. Beautiful white corn was 13 ears for a dollar and Mullet were plentiful in every cast net. They shut down corn farming in Zellwood because corn was bad for the environment, but the memories of the times last.

Im frim So Florida but Military has taken me all over the world. Im an avid fisherman and have gained several fishing buddies from various parts of the country. Flathead. I'm 60 now but when I was young my dad, my uncle and my grandpa would set lines on the Ninnesqua River down near Oxford Kansas. One labor day weekend we caught over 400 pounds of Flathead. My dad could read a river better than he could read a sentence Wild Bill. We would always have a big fish fry . The eggs were unbelievably good. The nest tasting Flathead at least around here aren't the big ones but rather the 7 to 14 pound range. The meat just tasted fresher . Limb lines along the river in a flatbottom boat with my dad. Best memories ever.

Thank you so much for showing the mullet gizzard. We always had to decide whether to eat the gizzards or fish with them. We had a 600 ft gill net and caught 100s of mullet. Love them.

Thank you for the great video. Here in North Louisiana, we fry the whole bream (small ones) and the tail and fins are excellent. I've caught quite a few flat head catfish from our lakes. Some of the ones I've caught from the Red River are quite large (20 to 30 pounds), but it's just for fun because the river is polluted. If you can catch them where you are located, I would enjoy watching.

Brant, my first duty station in the Navy was Whiting Field from 1977 to 1978. My buds and I would ski on the Blackwater river every morning. I heard you mention Reggie’s in Milton I used to go there to eat all you could eat fried mullet! Loved that chow!

Grew up in Merritt Island, FL and was always catching red fish, but we when we needed some more fish when more people showed up for dinner than we planned, we would go caught mullet and then blacken them just like the red fish. Miss those days!!!

I had a friend one time cook up some mullet with our snapper and he didn’t tell me he did that. He served them all together because I was one who said I would never eat mullet. It was so delicious and he didn’t tell me until I was eating it. I’m so glad he did because I would have never eaten it on my own. Great video as always.

Mullet has its own unique taste, it kind of remind me of a quail , which has its distinctive awesome taste. The only difference between us I think the skin on it with a mustard and hot sauce mix puts it over the top . Be safe and blessed out there dude

Grew up in Navarre on the bay. Mullet was a staple of life (along with oysters) for us growing up. Have not had any in a while, but it's definitely good. I remember restaurants having all-you-can-eat mullet on the menu...sure do miss that.

When I was a kid my dad and I would fish the Chesapeake Bay for catfish and croaker. It was the best fried fish I've had in my life. Not sure what kind of kitties they were but they were incredible. We would make fried catfish nuggets and put them on Hawaiian rolls with tartar for some fried fish sliders. I'd love to see some catfishing on the channel.

I grew up in the 60’s in the Midwest and we ate the roe from almost every fish we caught that had it. The only fish that we didn’t eat the roe from was Gizzard Shad . If you go fishing for Flatheads use some of your offshore gear, those things can get pretty big below the big dams. Great show by the way.

Mullet is great .was at that bridge Saturday morning. Yellow river has some very big catfish and u can get there very easy.i know you don't do a lot of fishing up there but I get there from blackwater all the time and there are tons of fish and half the pressure. Great vid

Back in the day years ags, I had a friend from the Tampa area. When he would fly back to Ga. to visit, he would stop and get a package or two of smoked mullet. He would come over to the house and we all would eat smoked mullet, and we all thought that they were amazing. Very good times had by all.

Formerly from the Islands and I love mullet fish we catch and eat them all the time. We fillet them put them in a smoker and eat them like fish jerky. Delicious! Or fry them as you did and make fish tacos with avocado, radish, lettuce, habanero peppers, and a splash of spicy mayo. You can thank me later. Another way is cooking /baking the whole fish including the head, removing the scale, and cleaning the mullet well, put mullet on a sheet of foil smothered with spicy mayonnaise with a dash of black pepper, salt, and a slice of lemon or any citrus, wrap and bake at 375 for at least 45 minutes or so and its ova! Enjoy buddy.

Great vid. Just caught some mullet today in my cast net and fried them up with the white roe (my favorite). Try seasoning the fish with season salt and Old Bay before you dredge the filets. Then spritz the hot filets lightly with key lime juice. Next level IMO.

Easiest way to catch mullet on rod and reel is to use a very small hook (8 or smaller) and put a small piece of bread on the hook. Don't press down on the bread so that it floats. They love it.

The other side of the island I front of that dock used to have an area baited with burlap sack with some kind of meal, anchored and tied to some poles in about 6-8 feet of water. Bunch of older guys would use cane piles or fly rods with a couple of treble hooks about 4 inches apart, tipped with a bit of plastic cut from a white grub lure, below a popping or tip-up cork. When the tide was in and at a stand still, it was on. Those guys would keep the bite going by tossing a handful of rabbit food or sinking dog food. Anytime a bite was detected they would snatch it like you were in the video. If they didn’t hook one in the mouth, it was a better than good chance they’d snag one.

I was a kid in Florida and I would catch mullet on a cane poll with bread wadded up on a hook in canals that were packed with mullet but I couldn’t into eating them . Lived in Hialeah in the 1950s. The only thing we used mullet for were bait. I was a kid about 11 or 12.

When I was growing up in St. Pete late 80's early 90's. We would visit friends in the panhandle. The highlight of the trip for me was stopping at a little shack on the side of the road. That had a big sign said smoked mullet. It was so..... good. Last time I visited the panhandle. I couldn't even find anyone selling it.

So I've never had roe like that but I do now! I've known that mullet was bait but I've never said I wouldn't eat it but I want to eat it now specially that back bone! Here in northern New Mexico, it's kokanee salmon snagging season. Delicious and fun to catch. These land locked salmon are dying anyway so it is encouraged here! Love your videos!

Brant, try making bottarga (cured mullet roe) one day using the roe of these mullet. You can find step-by-step instructions on KZbin. This Italian and, more generally, Mediterranean specialty is absolutely delicious, especially when grated on spaghetti or eaten on a small piece of bread with good-quality butter and a glass of white (very dry) wine like Muscadet. You will love it. BTW, when you talk about “white roe” you probably mean milt, don’t you?

Great video love mullet but the belly meat is allot and all it has is long rib like spines that can be easily picked out, just me but I would definitively would not waste that ./ Cooking the spine is also great no waste I personally like to fry fish whole skin and all just score it a few times.. There use to be a big Market for Mullet in the late 60's and 70's. there were mullet boats all over the sound netting mullet. we had a net we used from shore and caught all we wanted. We would also cast net them off Pensacola beach bridge the old one. I fished with Don Smith from Smith fish came our favorite was mullet gizzards all the old fishermen called them "Hockie Lockers". Roe is delicious if you fry off some bacon, then flour and season the roe and fry it in the bacon grease. Serve alongside the crisp bacon.

You need to bring a boat and come fish the river below Seminole lake. Every kind of catfish, striper, gar, perch, big mullet, panfish, bass. Even flounder and sheepshead are sometimes caught. 140 miles to the east. Worth a couple days fishing trip. Couple good camp grounds and a small motel in Snead's. And of course, you can hit the lake to. Just be careful of where you are because you could need a Georgia or Alabama license in some parts of the lake. But unless you want lmb or panfish, hit the river.

Growing up in Pcola, mullet was THE fish at all gatherings. Always enjoyed Gators, Nichols, Chets, and the other fine eating establishments. I still prefer it over many of the more notable species. The wife thinks I'm crazy but what does she know. Always enjoy your channel.

My neighbor here in Panama City catches massive mullet with a cast net. The first time he offered some fish I accepted because I'll eat anything out of the ocean, but was thinking in my head "I don't eat bait". He brought it over with the fried backbone/tail and some roe. It was incredible!!! Growing up, we would eat roe from spotted trout.
