Yes we do, we used to have a program like that in forks Washington called the "Schneider creek program" very similar. Until the spay anglers/wild steelhead coalition protested that the hatchery fish hurt the native fish and ended the program. Forks has never recovered and most likely never will.

@Jerry Boden it's hard to fish when the Tacoma power company is opening the floodgates every week. I've killed over 20 hatchery winter steelhead in the last 2 weeks on the cow. It's still nowhere close to what it used to be when I was fishing it as a kid.
@Cs-dt7eh2 жыл бұрын
@Jerry Boden they're finally allowing us to fish for springers after a 4-year closure. This state couldn't manage a t-ball team let alone a fishery.
@Cs-dt7eh2 жыл бұрын
@Jerry Boden I've been fishing the cowlitz since 1997 Bud you know when the A run of the steelhead would should up in November and run into the b run which is February- early April. Also used to produce 1.5 million fall Chinook fry and a great fall run but where's that Bud? Just getting started? 😂 This used to be a legit year round fishery but be happy with no fry production and massive invasive species that are destroying our fish.

@Jerry Boden lmfao 1,700 is excellent? 😂😂😂😂😂 Do you even look at the escapement reports? Hey man I got some beachfront property in Kansas I'll sell you real cheap.

@@sergeybeast it’s mismanaged because no one in the government can exploit and make money on an endangered species so the government does not care and the only ones who do and will actually make impactful changes are us fishermen!!! Why do they cut open the females for their eggs? Can't they squeeze them out and then release them so they can come back next year? It seems like such a waste.
@zachh32932 жыл бұрын
Those are hatchery fish, purposely bread for fisherman to catch and take home to there families. We don’t want those to spawn with the wild fish in the river, even though the broodstock program makes them more like a wild fish they are still raised in pens and handled by humans which makes them more susceptible to potential diseases and not as tuff as a wild spawned fish.
@grant04102 жыл бұрын
The broodstock ones get released back after being livespawned. Those “normal” hatchery fish don’t get put back. The reasons why is a whole other more in-depth convo
@ShenpaiWasTaken2 жыл бұрын
Won't the fish not be able to spawn with the wild population after spawning? (The only exception I can see would be to males that might be able to spawn more than once) Why not let the females go and possible making it back next year to spawn or to grow larger for someone to catch and keep?
@wojomojo11 ай бұрын
If you keep selecting biters, you are going to get alligator steelheads. Humans are always going to be selfish aren't we.
