Great video. I have fished the Wye for well over forty years. From the days when barbel were unheard of right up to the present day. I remember catching lots of barbel at Ross one day and then hooking something that just went wherever it wanted and whenever I got it close to the bank just it powered back out across the river. I was using a 1.75 test rod with 12lb line straight through and have landed numerous double figure barbel, but this was silly. In the end I tried to force the issue with the inevitable result, the hook pulled out. My mate fishing the next swim down was more disappointed than I was, he really wanted to see the fish. What it was remains a mystery, but all the signs point to a very large carp.

Wanderin Star Sounds like a carp to me. I’ve got a couple of similar scenarios where i was left with the only conclusion being carp! Thank you for the positive feedback.

Hi ive been a member of Ross angling club for a few years & have just started to target carp now in the summer, they are difficult to catch i must say but ive had a ghostie of 13.5lbs last summer & now i can i want more but bigger ones, good video boys & look forward to more.

I've fished the wye now for many years and have had just 1 carp which i caught from Monmouth town stretch, was purely accidental, had caught a couple of barbel and then wham! this thing took off like a scalded cat, I thought it must be a salmon at first, it took a halibut pellet and after a mighty scrap in which my arm felt as it was hanging off, a beautiful common carp of 21lbs 3oz graced the net.. must have been in the river a while, was not one of the overflated mud pigs but long and lean and an absolute stunner in mint condition, probably hadn't been caught before as I couldn't see any evidence of previous hook holds, did have the photos on my previous pc but it crashed, something went wrong and could never get the photos back, gutted is an understatement!.. to this day I've never had another but lost which I think was possibly one, but who knows?

Thanks Clive. The match caught ones I can remember are Derons 24lber in the Winter league 2 years ago, Danny Bakers 36lb (wow) winter league, Mark Jones 14lb in the 3 day Festival I think, Roger Wakinshaw 20lber in Riverfest final, James Fisher had 2 really small ones in a belmont open, and Woody had a couple in a proper mixed bag (including bream) off old peg 25 many years ago. I think Darren Frost had one in the Winter League too. Incredible fish.

Thoroughly enjoyable Dave. I used to accompany a buddy of mine on the Wye some years ago before he moved to France to run a carp fishing holiday business in the early 2000s. He put a lot of effort in to locating and catching Wye carp around Hereford and had success. I have seen them but not yet caught one but its on the 'list'. You are so right about being by the river during early morning whether fishing or not. Thank you. Paul 😊👍

Hi Paul That would be Colin then? I remember fishing down the Belmont section one evening and couldn't work out what the noise up stream was. I then came across Colin raining boilies in. He was one of the first I saw properly targetting them. I believe they've sold their French fishery and moved on to another project.

Have been working a similar project on the wye, the chub are a major problem. Will give your pva bag idea a try. Well done & keep the videos coming. 👍🏻

Cheers Mate. Was talking to Paul about it the other night before I had that one. Feeding at night time just seems to send the chub into a frenzy. I figure if there's 10 boilies around my bait it cuts down the odds of it being picked up straight away. Tigers maybe? Going to get some maize off Paul too. Corn is a waste of time on a hair. Needs something more substantial. Of course the obvious one is not fishing at night. We'll keep trying. Good luck and keep us updated. 👍
